Dear friends and supporters of Stability First,
What a blessing it has been for me to have served on the Board of this wonderful organization for the past three years
and witnessing the bountiful fruit that comes from God’s people working in tune with His will serving others. The vision
that was cast back in 2015 has been captured by our community, and the outpouring of time, talent and resources has
been amazing.
This report will drill down into the many facets of our 2018 experience. And what a year! To highlight just a few:
Our women’s shelter, the Magdalene House and it’s transitional facility, the Pike Street Bridge, were blessed
with grants from the Kendrick Foundation and the Morgan County Substance Abuse Council for the DETOUR
project, the substances abuse and mental health residential treatment program. This recovery program is a
model for shelter need-specific services. Addiction and concomitant mental illnesses are effectively addressed
in conjunction with community resources.
We have been blessed with a talented and devoted Magdalene House staff, supported by so many community
volunteers. Under the direction of Julie VanWinkle, these devoted workers help the residents grow and even
flourish!
Training and work experience opportunities for the Magdalene House residents grew, through a relationship
with the Hullys, operators of the Main Connection coffee shop, Maggie’s at the Main. A second opportunity
started when the Maggie Bag production center, located at the LYNAY Community Resource Center, opened in
April.
The men’s program, targeting the homeless, thrived under the shepherding of Rick Miller. Weekly group and
individual counseling and spiritual guidance focused on re-entry into community independent living and
connection to a home church.
The LYNAY Community Resource Center continues to serve the community by providing space for trainings,
meetings, and services. Late in the year, a computer lab was installed and plans were firmed up for offering
construction trade trainings.
Finally, 2018 was the year for the introduction of the Maggie Bag. Through a Round Up grant from the South
Central Indiana REMC, the lighting in the large meeting room of the LYNAY Center was up-graded to support a
sewing production operation. Under the guidance of Susan Hobson, the creator of the Maggie Bag, volunteers
from the community and residents of the Magdalene House began producing these “hobo style” reversible light
canvas bags. The reception in Morgan County and the surrounding area was outstanding. Many thanks to Home
Bank, with their five locations in three counties, Tangle’s Hair Salon, Core Fitness Club in Mooresville, and
Maggie’s at the Main in Martinsville for selling Maggie Bags.
Special Thanks go to Bill Moore, CEO of Pac Moore, for his vision and guidance. He introduced us to a
mission in Kathmandu, Nepal. Purnaa is a social enterprise with a mission to empower those marginalized by
society to fresh starts and fulfilled lives. They primarily do this by creating job opportunities for survivors of
abuse and exploitation and those discriminated against because of caste, religion or disease. In their textile
production center, they employ area women to make a variety of textile products and in 2019, plans have been
made for them to make Maggie Bags in larger volumes than possible at our local site.
It is my hope that this report encourages you. Lives are changing through the work of Stability First, as a result of
faithfulness to God’s purposes for His people. I ask you to pray and consider, if you are not already, partnering with us.
You will also be blessed!
In His grip,
Joe Mills Joe Mills, 2018 Board Chair

Dear Stability First Supporters and Friends,
When someone told me about the Magdalene House I knew I needed to do
something to get in there. I had been locked up for five years and I wanted to
keep myself in a structured environment. The first time I visited the Magdalene
House, I knew right then, from that moment, that’s where I needed to be. Once I
was at the Magdalene House the love and support that was shown to me was
amazing! I had goals every week that I worked hard to accomplish. I obtained a
job within two weeks of arriving and I’m still employed there today. I got my
driver’s license back and bought a car and most importantly rebuilt a relationship
with my family.
Now that I’m away from the house, and out on my own, I still go back and help in
any way that I can. The love and support from the people there is beyond
amazing! We are so lucky to have the Magdalene House so that other women
can experience what a blessing it is and how it can change your life, if you want it
to.
The director of the Magdalene House, Julie, has been such a blessing in my life.
She has taught me so much. I especially appreciate that she sponsored me as a
participant in the Walk to Emmaus. This opened my eyes so much and made me
realize that no matter what is in my past, God sees me as worthy and forgiven.
This has allowed me to move on in my life. The path that I am now on is
successful and truly very blessed. I would not be where I am at today without the
loving support of everyone at the Magdalene House.
Thank you all so much!
Ashley Ashley G.
Ashley and Magdalene House Director, Julie
VanWinkle, still meet for lunch regularly.
Both agree that it’s always helpful to have
someone to check in with and to provide
encouragement.
