    Two sided folding brochure.

Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop CS5

Effectively design a two sided folding brochure using quality images and a personally designed logo.

I started out by sketches on paper. Once I knew what I wanted to do, I opened up InDesign and started designing my layout. I used Photoshop to edit my images and put them in black and white. I used Illustrator to put a transparent yellow rectangle on top of my two background images. This helped the images match my color scheme and added to the feel of my message. Then I used Illustrator to make my logo and arrange the shapes and pictures on the inside and outside of my brochure. I positioned the triangles like I did because they create a nice flow to my design. When readers look at the inside of the brochure, their eyes immediately go to the logo, then up to the title, then over to the shapes and pictures, and finally over to the text. This gives viewers a chance to understand what the brochure is about before reading it. The triangles act as a nice repeating element too.

Next I opened up Word and wrote the text for my body copy. Once that was done, I went back into InDesign pulled my text over and used paragraph styling to get the paragraphs, title, and headings how I wanted them. I then added a text wrap around one of the triangles and the logo. Then I opened up Photoshop and used the quick selection tool to cut out the guy and the soldier on the back of my brochure. It took a lot of trial and error before I was able to get the soldier to line up right with the guy, but eventually it all worked out.

Inspirational montage made by blending two pictures together.

    Adobe Photoshop CS5

Blend two or more images together seamlessly, add text, and a pply a filter.

I uploaded the picture of the Ogden temple and the hill into Photoshop and changed the color to black and white with a hue. I picked this particular hill picture because I liked how the fence acts as a lead line. Also, I like the camera angle. It makes it look like you are looking up to the temple, enforcing the message.

Then, I used the lasso tool to select what I wanted of the temple and moved it on top of the hill, placing it so it would follow the rule of thirds. I put a mask on my image and used a feathered brush to blend the images together, using different percentages of opacity. I removed a hill that was awkwardly poking out on the right side of the picture by using the clone stamp feature. I cloned part of the sky and used that to replace the hill.

Then I added a text box and wrote out the quote by Dieter F. Uchtdorf. I decided to use bold caps to emphasize the main message of my design. Additionally, it provides contrast to my design. Then I aligned the top of the text with the point of the steeple and placed it so that it would follow the rule of thirds. Finally, I added a sharpen filter to the temple.

Personally taken photo with an applied mask and filter.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 and a camera

Demonstrate photography skills by taking a picture, editing it and then using a color scheme to create a design. Encorperate color swatches into that design.

Starting out, I already knew what I wanted my message to be. I decided that a path or trail would be the best way to convey that message. I found this path, took the picture, and uploaded it into Photoshop.

Once in Photoshop, I adjusted the levels, saturation, sharpness and color balance. I then shrunk the image into an 8.5 x 11 layout, where I added text and repeating rectangles. I alternated the color of each paragraph to incorporate my color scheme and make the design more interesting. To make sure that the color scheme was right, I dropped a color wheel right into my design. I used the eyedropper to copy the colors right off of the color wheel. Then I adjusted the colors a little so that they would match the picture better.

Realizing that my image had a glare that eliminated the detail at the end of the path, I went back to my original image and started adjusting the levels. That didnt help, so I used the clone tool to copy some of the rocks and plants. Once I was done, I placed my image into my final product.

Web page showcasing a personally designed logo.

    Adobe Illustrator and TextWrangler

Design and code a web page to learn how to use CSS and HTML.

I used TextWrangler to create both the HTML and CSS used in this website. I started by sketching my design out on paper. Once I knew what I wanted my web page to look like, I opened TextWrangler and went to work. I added an image of the ocean to make the page feel like it was for a travel agency. I chose this particular image becuase it tied in my color scheme quite nicely.

Then I went into Illustrator and put my logo in white and placed it on top of the image. The white logo provided a nice contrast to the blue ocean. Then I went back into Illustrator and took a screen shot of my blue logo. I then designed a mac computer and placed the screen shot inside of it. I though that this added a nice touch since the website is talking about how I designed the logo.

Next, I added my headings and used a bullet list to list out the steps that went into designing my logo. I added a brown ribbon at the bottom as a repeating element that gave my website a nice gestalt. Then I added the picture of me, heading, and the about me paragraph. I thought that would provide a nice touch in case any potential employers look at the website and are interested in getting a better feel for who I am.

Full-bleed magazine spread to promote a fundraiser.

Microsoft Word and a Black Epson Scanner

Using only Microsoft Word and a scanner, create an effective design by editting and scanned a professional grade image, and applying the correct combination of fonts and principles of design.

I scanned the image, changed it into a JPEG and uploaded it into Microsoft Word. I deleted some text that was on the image. Then I used text boxes to add my own text.

The image is divided into thirds: title, white space, and text with sea animal. The title is bold and draws the attention first, the ocean flow leads the eye down to the sea animal, which points to the text, giving the spread a nice flow.

According to the project description, the project could either be fictional or real. I did some research on the National Geographic Society, the WAitt Foundation and the SEAlliance and found out that they were participating in a project to keep the ocean clean and inhabitable for sea life. The project is called Ocean Blue. I dedicated my flier to their cause.

The world looking logo, which is in the upper right corner, is their logo for the Ocean Blue project. Originally, there were words around the logo, but the wording wouldnt show up on the flyer, so I used the remove background feature in Word to delete it.

    Personally created logo

    Adobe Illustrator

Create three different logos for the same company, ficticouse or real, using Adobe Illustrator.

I started out by sketching out images on paper. Once I had a few ideas, I opened Illustrator and started designing. The sketched ideas evolved into three completely different finalists. I took my design around and had people vote on which logo they liked the best. A similar variation of this logo came out on top.

Once I had my finalist, I refined it. I moved the text to the right side of the boat; originally the text was below the boat. Then I added a stroke line between the company name and agency. Next I adjusted the kerning on the letters, expanding it, so that it had both left and right alignment. I arranged the text so that the stroked line aligned with the top of the rim of the boat. I ended up with a black and white version of this logo. To add variation, I put one in color, one in a gray scale, and one in white font with a color background.

Stationary using a personally designed logo

    Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign

Design a logo and create a matching business card and letterhead using Illustrator and InDesign

I started by sketching different logos onto a piece of paper. I picked my favorite and started designing it in Illustrator. Using the pen tool I created the cutting shears. I modeled the curls on the shears after the curls from the D in Design. Then I grouped the text and the shears and imported them into InDesign where I started on my letterhead.

I used the shape tool to create a rectangle and filled it in with pink. To create a repeating pattern, I did the same thing to the bottom. Then I added the company name, my name, phone number, address, e-mail, and website to the top of the page. Then I added the texture at the top and placed my image. Lastly, I put a water mark on my image.

Personally designed business card and logo

    Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign

Design a logo and create a matching business card and letterhead using Illustrator and InDesign

I waned to make sure that the letterhead and the business card looked like they came from the same company, so I used repeating patterns to tie them together. I added a pink rectangle to the center of the business card and included the same texture to the outsides of the card. Then I added my text. Next I placed my logo and tilted it on its side.

For the back of the business card, I tied everything together, by using the same texture and pink rectangle that I had on the front. I placed my logo and tilted it once again like I had on the front.

Black and white flier that is being used to promote a graduate leadership conference.

    Adobe InDesign

Create an effective flyer advertising a graduate leadership conference using predetermined image, logo, and text.

I started by creating several different sketched on paper. Then I chose the best design and used Adobe InDesign to make that design come to life. The crisp design, image of the young woman, and use of contrast on the word Graduate act as cues to bring in the right audience. I set up the flow so the highly contrasted, bold title catches the attention and cues the reader into what the flier is about.

From the title, the attention goes to the image of the woman which, acting as an arrow, directs viewers over to the text. The white space between the title and copy and the white space in the bottom left corner act as resting places. This makes the flier visually easier to look at. The triangles act as a repeating element throughout the design, creating repetition and unity. Additionally, I made sure that everything was aligned, giving the appearance of organization. I was given the image, logo, and content for this flier.
