Two Eventful Years of Office
As our team lays down its office on completion
of 2 eventful years from April 2012 to March
2014, I share the developments and
achievements which have taken SAEINDIA to a
new height in all spheres of activities. In terms
of membership development, we have reached
nearly 6000 members targeted by us in 2012
including associate members and this should go
up in an exponential manner in the years to
come with various new initiatives launched by
us in the last 2 years. Student membership
continues to hover around 45,000 plus and no
of Collegiate Clubs keeps on the increase.
SAEINDIA Newsletter has been released every
quarter with unfailing frequency and the entire
gamut of events and activities of all Sections
and Divisions are getting adequate coverage
with focus on major events, programs and
projects.
SAEINDIA launched Mobility Engineering in
December during SIMCOMVEC and has been
reaching over 8000 mobility professionals with
the best of the articles on three verticals
embellished with contributions from Indian
experts giving the readers a global perspective
with National flavour. SIMCOMVEC which
combined the 8th International Mobility
Conference with the 1st Commercial Vehicle
Congress was a runaway success in all aspects
including technical papers presented and stalls
in the Exposition and no of delegates registered
despite the industry melt down both in National
and International arena.

The success of the event was reflected in the
extensive media coverage by both National
Dailies and Business Newspapers. SUPRA
SAEINDIA Virtual held in September at
Buvaneshwar was a huge event with more then
172 teams competing and nearly 100+ teams
qualifying for the track event to be held in July
2014. The spectacular growth in less than 3
years and modelling the competition on the
formula pattern will enable SAEINDIA to raise it
to global level and enable more Indian teams to
participate in International competitions held in
a few countries over the years.
BAJA SAEINDIA 2014 was an outstanding
success with 125 teams competing in the final
track event and the exponential growth in less
than 7 years is a tribute to the ingenuity and
enterprise of Indian Engineering Students and as
stated by Dr.Pawan Goenka, Past President of
SAEINDIA participation in BAJA SAEINDIA will
soon become a benchmark for qualifying for
employment in automobile industry more than
the academic scores of the students.
Career Start program was scaled up to National
level and the On Line entrance exam attracted
over 3800 students and the companies who
participated in the recruitment were truly
impressed with the quality of students offered
to them and agreed to join Talent Management
Group of SAEINDIA to make the future events a
greater success.....

....Both Aerospace and Off Highway verticals
have offered high quality programs in the form
of National Aerospace Conference and SINE
program for women engineers in Off Highway
industry and there are more on the anvil in the
months to come. In retrospect, two years of
office for our team have been purposeful, result
oriented and achievement filled cornering
success and glory in all our endeavors. I am sure
the new team under Dr.Aravind Bharadwaj will
reach greater heights in the years ahead and
turn SAEINDIA into a truly a Premier Professional
Organization in the Country.

participate though we took only 125 (with each team
comprising 30-35 students), that's fairly good progress.
It's a 10X improvement. If any company does 10X growth
in less than 10 years, that will be quite good. That's the
primary thing.
What Baja SAE India is doing is not just making
automobiles. It's about teaching students teamwork that
they don’t get a chance to learn elsewhere, and
teamwork is very important in their careers. Its teaching
them programme management, which is important for
product development.
It's teaching them cost management and marketing
because they have to go find sponsors for their teams.
It's teaching them leadership because someone takes
responsibility for the entire team. Managing a team of
30-35 members is like running a good product
development unit. So, it's really helping to make these
30-35 students full engineers, having gotten their hands
dirtied. Today, the engineering curriculum unfortunately
has taken out most of the stuff that we used to have in a
five-year curriculum that allowed us to do things with
our hands.
I think in terms of graduating a ready automobile
engineer, those who go through a Baja experience
certainly have an advantage over other students who
have not gone through it.
Companies are now realising this. They are not just
looking at grades but whether or not a student has
participated in Baja, which is an indication of his / her
interest in the automobile industry.
Excerpts from the interview of Autocar Professional
with Dr. Pawan Goenka, Past President SAEINDIA
Dr Pawan Goenka, Mahindra & Mahindra's Executive
Director and President (Automotive & FES), is a seat-of-
the-pants engineer instrumental in driving Baja SAE
India. He speaks to Sumantra B. Barooah how the inter-
collegiate contest has become a nurturing ground for
automobile engineers and why brand India needs a
push.
How would you describe the evolution of the Baja event
over the past seven years?
I would like to put this in a bigger context. Why did we
start this event? We first thought about it in early 2007
when I was SAE India president. Looking at the future, we
could foresee a great shortage of automobile engineers
and that most engineering students would prefer to
make a career not in the auto industry or hardcore
engineering but in software, IT, banking and finance.
Therefore, we needed something specific to create
excitement in college campuses about manufacturing
generally and about the automobile industry specifically.
SAE International had the Baja, so that's how this whole
idea came about. Take this event and start creating
something that students look forward to every year.
Then probably we could start making a difference. The
event has gone beyond our expectations. When we
started in 2007, we had 28 teams participating. From
there to now, when we have 325 teams keen to

BAJA SAEINDIA 2014
The Virtual round took place at Sri Venkateshwara College,
Bangalore on 26th & 27th July 2013. After having so many
workshops on the engineering softwares, tutorials &
practices they prepared their best for the virtual round in
terms of technical, management & engineering aspects.
They designed their dream car virtually on their computers
as well as on paper.
Out of 25 team members in the team, 4 of them presented
their potential in the round. All teams did a splendid job to
get selected for the main event but only 125 teams got
selected for the main round in which 2 women-teams of
were also included.
As soon as the result got declared, they started their
preparations for the main event which was to be held in
Indore from 19th to 23rd February 2014. By getting the
sponsorship, college funds or by team funds, they started
fabricating the virtual design of their vehicles by
themselves. Without having any professional help,
undergraduates put all their engineering concepts &
theories for making the buggy including welding, grinding
& machining by themselves. All 25 students with their
faculty advisors spent day & night for making the best.
With the help of rulebook & their design, they started
giving shape to their vehicles.
Preparing the reports on the design they started rolling
their buggy in the college level. Now, they have to pass the
technical inspection which was going to be held at college
level & in which their design & manufacturing process were
checked with the rulebook. Inspection has been done for
all over the country & only 5 teams got eliminated.
SAEINDIA
Now, it’s time for the Main Event at NATRAX, NATRIP
Facility, Pithampur, Indore. Teams reached at the site
from all corners of the country with their buggies a day
before the event. Students appeared in the BAJA
APTITUDE Test held at the Host Institute (Swami
Vivekanand College of Engineering) at Indore for the HR
MEET.
Day Zero - The event started with the Oath on “RAISE
THE BAR”. Teams registered themselves at the site and
went to their pits. Teams can go for the Technical
Inspection at site level.
Well trained technical inspectors scrutinized the vehicles
of all teams and passed them for the various static
events like Engine Check, Weight Check & Tilt test. After
getting the Tech OK sticker from the Technical
Inspectors, teams can go for the Brake, Figure of 8 Test
& Accelaration Test. Brake test OK sticker was
mandatory for the teams. No team can go for the
dynamic test without having the all the 3 stickers.
Press conference was scheduled at Hotel Radisson in
Indore on the very same day. Teams can go for the GO
GREEN Emission Presentation at the site which gave
them a separate award for the same.
Day 1 – In the spirit of winning the event, teams could
now proceed for the static evaluation at the site. Static
Evaluation includes the design & cost evaluation by the
respective Judges from the different automotive
companies. Evaluation has been done to check the
engineering concepts used by the teams to make the
buggy & according by scores were provided.

On the other hand, Dronacharya award evaluation was
going on for the Best Faculty Advisor award of the
team. Technical Inspection was also going on in parallel
for the remaining teams. Best thing for the team
happened on the day that has not happened before
was the opening of Dynamic events on the First Day.
The very steep 26 degree concrete 35 meters Hill
Climb was the centre of attraction, looking very tough
to get through for the teams. Second was the
Suspension & Traction Test which was the rumble for
the cars. The hurdles like Table top, Logs, Mud Pit,
Steps & alternate breakers sharked the chassis of the
vehicles & was a must watch event. Many vehicles got
their parts broken on the track which was again
repaired by students. The track was of International
level. Manoeuvrability was another event with very
sharp turns & prepared to check the steering system of
the buggies. Many of teams got puzzled and got
penalties for the fouls.
And after the huge stress, the day ended with a rocking
DJ Party which was organized for the hardworking
students to relieve the stresses. The party was
awesome with very pleasing performance by the band
from GOA. All people at site got attracted by the party
and showed their talent in dance.
Day 2 – The day was mainly for completing the
dynamic events but some teams got stuck in the
technical inspection and in the brake test and as a
result they got eliminated. Some got penalized, and
some got eliminated but the event was going on in full
flow. Teams were performing in the dynamic events to
get better marks and ranking. The visits of VIP’s
increased as the event was in progress and people
were getting
SAEINDIA
enthusiastic for the final day Endurance test. Teams got the
practice run on the track and later got arranged in the
starting grid.
Day 3 – Finally the wait was over, It was the final day of the
event. The vehicles were already placed in the grid to start
the battle. They all got their transponders stick to their
vehicles for the lap count. All dignitaries , the Chief Guest
and all the eminent people were there to start the final
event with the Release of Overdrive Supplement of ‘’BAJA
SAEINDIA 2014”.Before starting the Endurance test, vehicles
had a mock run with the Ambulance & Fire Brigades as a
matter of safety.
And finally the tricolor balloons were flown by the Chief
Guest and all the vehicles got cranked with the throttling
sound and just after it was the flag off in the presence of
Honourable Chief Guest Dr. Pawan Goenka who started
BAJA SAEINDIA in 2007 & Mr. Tom Gillespie who is popularly
known for his fundamentals in Vehicle Dynamics. Vehicles
rushed to the track from the grid overtaking one another by
using their driving skills and with the maximum efficiency of
their vehicles.
The track itself consists of hurdles like Hills & valleys, mud
pit, Splash, speed breakers, and sharp turns. It was very well
designed by the organizing committee. They kept it natural
with cracks & rocks but it did not matter to the teams. The
cars with better fabrication performed well on the tracks
without any damage covering so many laps. Some got
broken and penalized if found repairing over the tracks.
Towing arrangement was there to transport the broken cars
to the pits. After the long endurance battle of 4 hours in
which we had seen many ups & downs from the teams,
dignitaries waved the chequered flag.
N E W S L E T T E R

Teams had covered the expected no of laps as the track
was longer than the past, but the best cars succeeded in
the endurance. Scrutiny of the top 10 cars was done by
the technical inspectors for checking the engine and the
other technical points like the modifications with the
engine during the race and others for being equal in
basic parameters.
After the remaining formalities with the teams and the
organizers regarding penalties, returning of
transponders & other important notices, we were ready
for the most important Valedictory event in which the
hardworking students got praise by all the dignitaries on
the dais with the prize money of around Rs. 31 Lakhs.
Teams got theirs awards in different categories and they
were greated with load cheers.
