From Paris to Beijing, crossing half the globe, Delta Green Building Exhibition has finally come to Taipei, to the great expectations from the public.

During COP21 last year, Delta Green Building Exhibition at Grand Palais Paris caught the world’s attention with ten years of devotion in green building. In June this year, we moved the exhibition to the Academy of Arts & Design in Tsing Hua University, an institute filled with humanity and culture. Once again, the energy-saving technologies of Delta’s 22 green buildings stroke a spark with the local culture, giving the exhibition a different perspective and outlook. The Green Building Exhibition is now held at Huashan 1914 Creative Park, and Delta hopes to share with our friends in Taiwan its inspiration and experience for its 22 green buildings in the past ten years. At the same time, “Building Green Buildings with Delta”, by Delta Electronics Foundation and Global Views Monthly, the book accompanying the exhibition, is officially published. Together with 12 micro movies, it gives the public a deeper understanding of these 22 smart green buildings. You may catch a sneak peek of the complete report in “Brand Circle” of this issue, as well as visit the exhibition to experience with us the benefits of green buildings.

Strong at adapting buildings to climate change, Delta also sees business opportunities in their energy efficiency. In May, it acquired two building automation companies, Delta Controls and LOYTEC, and planned to integrate the technological prowess of the three in energy saving to provide more comprehensive building automation solutions and services. In “Special Report” of this issue, we invited Delta Controls and LOYTEC to introduce their company history, products, and culture to let fellow colleagues get better acquainted with the two new members of the group.

Also, in this issue we are honored to interview our Vice Chairman, Mr. Mark Ko, who shared with us on how he led Delta in becoming the world’s top player in power supplies. Mr. Ko is also the man leading the acquisition operation. He talked about the short, mid, and long term strategic objectives for Delta Controls and LOYTEC after joining Delta, as well as its brand communication to the market. Don’t miss “Brand People”. In this issue’s “Brand Academy”, IT Department’s Internet Security team uses simple examples to convey the importance of internet security to today’s enterprises, as well as introduces the internet security policies that have been gradually implemented by Delta in recent years.

There had been good news from DSBU. Besides winning Taichung City Government’s award once again to be the technical advisor for outdoor projection during Taichung Light Festival, Delta India team also built a video wall for Surat Smart City, realizing the visualization for city’s information management. Stay tuned for more exciting cases of success in this issue.

At Delta Controls, one of the newest members of the Delta Group family, they make buildings think for themselves. The objective is to help create greener buildings that are more Earthright™, balanced with a better building occupant experience.

Delta Controls researches, designs, and manufactures a suite of leading building automation and integration products that combine to make networked systems. These systems monitor and control the temperature, lighting, and access within buildings. They also integrate many other devices brought about by the exciting Internet of Things revolution.

Delta Controls has been doing this for over 30 years. Their humble beginnings, entrepreneurial spirit, passion for innovation, and drive to make the world a better place make them remarkably similar to Delta Electronics.

Delta Controls has more than 250 employees, many who have been with the company for over 20 years. They distribute the products through 300 authorized Delta Controls Partners in over 80 countries. Many of Delta Controls’ Partners have also been with them, installing their systems, for over 20 years. They see themselves not as customers, but as part of the Delta Controls family, just as Delta Controls have, in turn, become part of the Delta Group family. Delta Controls’ Partners see this new family as an opportunity to have access to even more green products to sell to their clients, which is just one of the exciting synergies Delta Controls is currently investigating.

Earthright represents Delta Controls’ focus on fighting climate change and making the world a better place. They continue to develop advanced building technologies that make it easy for hospitals, schools, offices, stadiums, casinos, data centers, universities or whatever large building infrastructure to reduce energy consumption and costs. Delta Controls’ hardware, software, firmware and algorithms are part of some of the most spectacular and some of the most rewarding building projects in the world, from massive skyscrapers to community buildings such as local elementary schools.

At Delta Controls, the Earthright ethos means they are committed to sustainable business methods. Their low carbon footprint HQ has natural ventilation, natural lighting and ground source heat pumps. They recycle all possible materials from their manufacturing facility, and even their product packaging has green credentials.

For Delta Controls, Earthright also means a positive contribution to their employees and the communities around them. They must have one of the busiest in-house gyms locally thanks to the participation of Delta Controls’ eager and energetic staff. They also drive many community initiatives, including charity fundraising events, family activity days, and food bank collections. Delta Controls also participates in community runs, dragon boat racing, skiing, and golfing. All of these activities help strengthen their team spirit and bring them closer together.

EarthrightTM

“Do it Right” has been not only Delta Controls’ motto for many years, but also the motto of their authorized Delta Controls Partners. These three simple words are the first that spring to mind from their employees, Partners and customers, and this is a major factor in their growth over the years.

Delta Controls prides themselves on their reputation within the industry of providing the best support for their Partners, and ultimately for their end customers. They believe that maintaining this reputation will result in far more profit overall than any short term gains achieved by cutting corners. Do it Right starts at the heart of their organization and extends throughout the standards and methods for building their product.

The family atmosphere, unique customer relationships and the long tenure of staff combine to make Delta Controls a truly unique place. It’s this setting that’s allowed Delta Controls to innovate in the fields of building control and building communication. They’re using their guiding principles to change the industry, making every building greener, and now, with their incorporation into the Delta Group, Delta Controls will be doing it faster than ever before.

Delta Controls is proud and pleased to be a Delta Group Company. They see the merger of company cultures and products as a winning formula for rapid future growth. The Delta Controls team is excited and looking forward to working closely with other Delta Group companies to grow the business.

Do it Right

“Do It Right” is the motto of every employee of Delta Controls.

LOYTEC managers follow an “open door” philosophy. Customers highly value the accessibility of the LOYTEC management team and how it carefully listens to their requests, ideas, needs and demands, which is also true of LOYTEC employees.

"Because of short decision paths and flat hierarchies, I am able to bring in my own ideas repeatedly, such as for product innovation. That’s what I particularly like about LOYTEC!” said LOYTEC technical sales representative Sascha Remmers.

“A customer is the most important visitor on our premises.

He is not dependent on us.

We are dependent on him.

He is not an interruption of our work.

He is the purpose of it.

He is not an outsider of our business.

He is a part of it.

We are not doing him a favour by serving him.

He is doing us a favour by giving us an opportunity to do so.”

LOYTEC is a technology-driven building automation solution provider that started from a spinoff at the University of Technology Vienna, Austria in 1999. Since its founding, the company has continued to be passionate about entrepreneurship and developing intelligent networked products for building automation. It provides highly innovative building management and control solutions that integrate HVAC control, room automation, lighting control, sunblind control and energy monitoring.

LOYTEC’s product portfolio stands for best in class connectivity using IP technologies leveraging state of the art network security methodologies from I/O level all the way up to a cloud ready build-ing management system. There, LOYTEC exclusively relies on open and standardized communica-tion protocols. LOYTEC develops, manufactures, and distributes embedded Automation Servers and I/O Controllers, the room automation system L-ROC, DALI lighting controls, the VAV system LIOB-AIR, router and gateway solutions, and also graphical user interfaces in the form of touch panels or via PCs or mobile devices leveraging web technologies.

Today, LOYTEC represents a team of 70, of which half is devoted to product research and develop-ment and the other half takes care of sales and technical support for customers from over 80 coun-tries globally, provides logistics and even includes a small manufacturing team. The manufacturing team supports a full range of in-house manufacturing capabilities, which ensures LOYTEC can respond to all orders, of which 80% are generally urgent with short lead times, while assuring excel-lent quality. They are proud to produce the best quality product “Made in Austria.”

“The customer is first” is the iron rule for the team. Clearly posted on the wall of the clean and bright coffee break area, is a quote from Mahatma Ghandi that reminds everyone:

In a workplace culture that encourages the opinions of all to enrich conversations and diversity of thought, the lead time for the LOYTEC team to incubate innovative solutions from concept to commercialization is also quite short.

Take the revolutionary L-ROC room automation system for example: One powerful controller can control up to 16 room segments including HVAC, lighting, shading and security. More and more, people are talking about this type of cross function integrative control while discussing solutions for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings. L-ROC was and still is one of the few such solutions avail-able in the market, showing seamless integration at its best. With the team’s collective efforts, L-ROC provides a LOYTEC showcase for showing their current capabilities for interfacing with almost all building related protocols, including BACnet, LON, KNX, OPC-UA and XML-DA, Modbus TCP on the IP side and KNX, SMI, DALI, Modbus on the twisted pair side. Naturally there are also the wireless protocols EnOcean and WLAN onboard.

Are you curious about how LOYTEC has kept the momen-tum for so much innovation over the past 17 years? Putting people first is not only about valuing everyone’s opinions, but it is also about the fresh meals that Eugen, the Chef de Cuisine, prepares for everyone every day.

In April of 2016, LOYTEC joined the Delta Group family, to serve as a competence center for integrated building management and control systems. Hans-Joerg Schweinzer, Managing Director of LOYTEC, reaffirmed his optimism for the continued growth of business opportunities in building automation, and that as a Delta family member people are still the key: “In the past few months I have had the opportunity to meet with many enthusiastic and open minded people at Delta locations worldwide. Their enthusiasm is the foundation that makes us strong and allows us to grow our business significantly, together.”

In 2015, LOYTEC finished in 3rd place at Austria’s Leading Companies Award. Chief Technology Officer Dietmar Loy (2nd from left) received the award on behalf of the company.

LOYTEC CEO Hans-Jörg Schweinzer (2nd from left) worked with his team to host the 1st LOYTEC Meetingpoint for all Austrian clients in and around Vienna. The event took place in the LOYTEC headquarters and presented the LWEB-900 buildings management system and the flexible L-ROC room automation concept.

LOYTEC, which serves as a competence center of the Delta Group for integrated building management and control systems, ensures its partners acquire the necessary knowledge for LOYTEC products and implementation concepts through a sustainable training program.

After traveling more than 22,000-km from the Grand Palais in Paris to Tsinghua University in Beijing, the Delta Green Building Exhibition has finally returned to Taiwan after 10 months of waiting and will be opened on Septem-ber 24 2016. The new book, “Building Green Building with Delta,” which is published by Delta Electronics Founda-tion and Global Views Monthly, has been released on the same day. In the book, the construction processes and energy-saving experiences regarding the green buildings Delta built in the past ten years are presented. As to correspond to the chapters in the book, Delta made 12 micro movies about the green buildings. (Click to see Delta’s Micro Movies about Green Buildings)With Delta’s managers and famous scholars and architects as the

narrators, the audience are brought back to the initial planning stage while getting to know Delta’s original intention to build green buildings, which is to pay respect to the nature, by the clear expert viewpoints and beautiful images.

Founder and Honorary Chairman Bruce Cheng, Chairman Yancey Hai, CEO Ping Cheng, PSBG General Manager An Cheng, Curator and Delta Electronics Foundation CEO Shan-Shan Kuo, Spokesman and Corporate Communications Assistant Vice President Jesse Chou, and Delta Electronics Foundation Vice CEO Wim Chang attended the opening ceremony for the exhibi-tion. Moreover, guests, including former principal of National Tsinghua University Chung-Laung Liu, architect J.J. Pan, former minister of EPA Kuo-Yen Wei, Mr. Eugene Chien, former premier of Executive Yuan Chao-Shiuan Liu, founder of Global Views Monthly Charles Kao, and publisher Li-Sing Wang were all presented to show the attention and support to energy-saving building issues.

”About 10 years or so ago, I was inspired by Dr. Lovin’s Natural Capitalism. I went to Thailand and Germany to visit the green buildings introduced in the books and started Taiwan’s road to building green buildings. For the last decade, Delta has constructed more than 20 green buildings and gathered many experiences. With the Delta Green Building Exhibition, Delta wants to tell people that green buildings are environmental friendly and energy-saving and they make residences live healthier and more comfortable,” said Mr. Bruce Cheng.

”About 10 years or so ago, I was inspired by Dr. Lovin’s Natural Capital-ism. I went to Thailand and Germany to visit the green buildings introduced in the books and started Taiwan’s road to building green buildings. For the last decade, Delta has constructed more than 20 green buildings and gathered many experiences. With the Delta Green Building Exhibition, Delta wants to tell people that green buildings are environ-mental friendly and energy-saving and they make residences live healthier and more comfortable,” said Mr. Bruce Cheng.

“With the book that is full of real pictures, readers may understand in detail Delta’s journey in learning about green buildings in the past decade. Also, people may find out Delta’s intention in trying to realize its eco-friendly principle from the 12 themed micro movies on the Internet. In the month-long Green Building Exhibition, Delta’s 22 green buildings are represented by 3D and interactive means. With the three different media, it is hoped people will get closer to green buildings and under-

stand their advantages so Delta’s green buildings will make greater influence on people, ” said curator Shan-Shan Kuo.

For many years, Delta has been devoted in playing the “bridge.” Delta started by participating in international conferences and bringing the latest climate knowledge back to Taiwan and then introduced Taiwan’s energy-saving buildings to the world. This time, Delta concentrated the construction processes of its 22 green buildings and the communication and exhibition experiences into the Delta Green Building Exhibition once and for all in Taiwan.

With more than six months of intensive discussions and preparations, it is hoped the people in Taiwan will pay more attention on the issues regarding energy-saving building and increased energy efficiency after visiting the exhibition. Up until the evening before the opening and the moment before guests arriving in Huashan 1914 Creative

Park, the people from Delta were still busy racing with the time. All they wanted were to have great exhibition feedback and encourage the visitors to show their concern and be more willingly to do something for the energy-saving building issue.

As you walk in 1914 Creative Park in the autumn breeze, there is the Eco-Friendly House just in the front of the entrance. It is made using the recyclable materials from Delta’s Ring of Celestial Bliss, which was the biggest topic of discussion of Taiwan Lantern Festival in 2013. It is also Delta’s attempt to fulfill the idea of a building supplying its own power. Beside the house, the Solar Power Truck that faces the sun to collect renewable energy and has a battery on the bottom supplies the house with sufficient lighting power every day and gives power to the city if there is any extra left. The Student Design Camp, which is held in the near future, will use this house as the reconstruction target to encourage the young people to find out the possibilities of energy uses in the future.

The month-long Delta Green Building Exhibition was opened in Huashan 1914 Creative Park. Mr. Bruce Cheng (middle), Mr. Yancey Hai (third from left), Mr. Ping Cheng (left), and Ms. Shan-Shan Kuo (second from right) opened the exhibition together.

“Hopefully through the book, micro movies and exhibition, people will understand the benefits of green buildings and in turn devote in building naturally,” said curator Ms. Shan-Shan Kuo.

Made of the recyclable materials of Delta’s Ring of Celestial Bliss from the 2013 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Hsinchu, the Eco-Friendly House supplies its own power and is the reconstruction target for the exhibition’s design camp.

Now, let’s show you the Delta Green Building Exhibition.

As you walk through the nostalgic Japanese corridor, you will see the entrance decoration that looks like a house door near the Boiler Room. The “Flower, Bug, and Stone Corridor” at the exhibition entrance demon-strates the three main visual themes, flower, bug, and stone, to the visitors with the 3D arts installations. Respectively, they show that green buildings can demonstrate “flower as form” and have bionic structure while helping the residences adjust to the impact of extreme weather; green buildings can invite “bug as neighbor” and allow ladybirds to be the residences’ good neighbors while creating a friendly environment for all organisms; and green buildings can make “stone as eaves” and integrate natural resources with advanced technology. The eye-catching white eaves of Delta’s Tainan Plant are the best example.

Stepping in the exhibition, Talk to Nature introduces the precursor of the Delta Green Building Exhibition, which is the exhibition held in Grand Palais in Paris last year. The exhibition was the witness of a new era in history. As the world leaders passed the Paris Agreement, it is very possible to hold the global average temperature increase to well below 2 °C by the end of the century. “Initial Intention and Implementation” shows Delta’s first intention in building green buildings in 2005. Here, precious photos of Mr. Bruce Cheng leading the managers overseas to learn about green buildings are displayed.

The section “Flower as Form” adopts the design concept of Namasia Ming Chuan Elementary School that corresponds to the nature as the theme to fascinate the visitors.

The section “Flower as Form” adopts the design concept of Namasia Ming Chuan Elementary School that corresponds to the nature as the theme to fascinate the visitors.

The section “Stone as Eaves” features Delta’s first green office, Delta Tainan Plant, which was built using simple and low-cost green building techniques to respond to the nature and achieve sustainability.

Continued with the exhibitions in Paris and Beijing, Delta Green Building Exhibition in Taipei uses flower, bug, and stone as the themes. With the language and presentation that people understand, the diversified appearances of green buildings are showed in hope to encourage Taiwan to pay attention to energy-saving buildings.

Next, Delta’s 22 green buildings are introduced. First, green buildings Delta donated to schools in Mainland China and Taiwan are presented. For example, Y.S. Sun Green Building Research Center of NCKU was reviewed as the world’s greenest building by Jerry Yudelson, the Historical Lecture Hall of the Taichung First Senior High School is Taiwan’s first historical building with the carbon footprint certified, and the Orchid House of NCTU won four awards in Solar Decathlon Europe. All of the buildings are amazing and out of imagination.

In the other section, the two green buildings that arouse an echo in the minds of the visitors are the reconstructed Namasia Ming Chuan Elementary School which was destroyed by Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and the Delta Americas Headquarters which has been opened for use for a year. The first is the best example showing a green building’s climate-resilience as it makes the indigenous people’s dream of “staying away from disaster but not home” come true. The second is an example of Delta using the geothermal heat pump successfully, which may make it the first local net-zero energy consumption building.

Moreover, the Learning Corner is another section worth mentioning. In order to enhance the visitors’ ability to correspond to the weather changing and energy issues, the Learning Corner features iPad games and interactive games. The visitors may learn about how buoyancy-driven ventilation works, where the general energy consump-tion hotspots are in buildings, and how much carbon footprint do home equipment and appliances produce everyday. The visitors may gain a lot of energy-saving knowledge from the games.

Last is the Building in Nature Theater. With Delta’s latest high luminance, high resolution ultra-short focus projector, the green building movie that attracted many people’s attention in Paris is played in the dark room using the edge-blending projection technique. The visitors may feel like as if they are dancing with the fireflies and ladybirds in the green environment created by Delta. Everyone should clearly understand that Delta does not only want to show its advanced energy technology and design technique, but that people should be humble and have respects for the nature. Also, Delta wants the visitors to feel calm in body and mind from the movie.

The Delta Green Building Exhibition which has returned to Taipei after traveling half the world is not just another exhibi-tion in another place. There are many new ideas and attempts included. The exhibition calls the public to respond to the weather changing and energy issues. It is hoped that, after visiting Huashan 1914 Creative Park, people may start having their own green life.

Founder Bruce Cheng visited the exhibition to show support for the staff.

Be entertained while educated. The interaction games in the Learning Corner allow the visitors to know how much carbon footprint are produced by a house.

Beam pumper, also called kowtow machine, utilizes motors to drive connecting rod mechanism and uses horse heads to propel sucker rod to move up- and down-ward repeatedly for driving the underground pump and pushing the piston. Crude oil from the well is then pumped to reservoir tank for general application in extraction of oil in oil fields. However, motors of conventional kowtow machines run under constant frequency and speed that can easily cause problems such as low efficiency, high energy consumption, serious wear-down on mechanical parts etc.

For issues that exist during the extraction by the pump, Delta offers its automated beam pump solution that effectively integrates IA (industrial automation) products such as its HMI, PLC, invertor, industrial Ethernet switch, and SCADA industrial configuration software to build an automated system featuring both energy efficiency and remote monitoring that is currently successfully used on one major oil field with noticeable results. Utilizing this system architecture, along with feedback on status of pumping in oil well, the invertor is able to automatically adjust speed of rotation for the pump motor, which in turn increases efficiency of pump operation and achieves power saving rate of 20% higher for the oil well, effectively decreasing spending on utility.

Forming a collaborative culture andinaugurating new businessAn interview with Mr. Mark Ko, Vice Chairman of Delta ElectronicsText by Brand Management Office

Vice Chairman Mr. Mark Ko

During the widely-acclaimed Delta Talk in mid-July, colleagues experienced Vice Chairman Mark Ko’s powerful words at this rare event. He told a lively story of “go the extra mile” from the Bible to share his ideas on the best attitude for life and work. Under Mr. Ko’s leadership, Delta completed the merger of Delta Controls and LOYTEC, which has huge potential for Delta’s building automation (BA) business. Recently, Mr. Ko agreed to this special interview from Delta Brand Management where he shared his experience in handling mergers from a strategic level, as well as his wish for Delta colleagues to set their own goals and rediscover their passion for work.

As the first manager of Delta’s power business unit, Mr. Ko recalls the early days of the power business, where he could envision Delta’s growth potential. Though competitors were always present, he encouraged colleagues to look towards a larger horizon and to think and act like they were No. 1. “Goals must be set for work and there must be a dream that you are willing to devote yourself to.” With this belief, dreams were converted into actions, and Mr. Ko led his team and Delta’s power business to the top of the world industry.

With the gradual expansion of the organization, Mr. Ko has gained a wide-ranging experience at Delta. In recent years, he positioned himself as a “person seeking opportunities of growth for Delta” in the hope that he could find the next wave of dynamic energy to drive the company. After COP21 in Paris, energy-saving has become a popular topic, and energy management for buildings is now regarded as a business opportunity with the most potential for development. This May, Delta announced the merger of Delta Controls and LOYTEC, which are located in North America and Europe respectively, to mark its formal entry into the building automa-tion market. The merger fulfills Delta’s brand promise for environmental-friendliness and energy savings.

And the challenges are beginning to unfold.

“Building Automation is a new field for Delta. The needs of the market are not quite identical with Delta’s current products and multinational companies such as Johnson Controls, Schneider, and Siemens are already well-estab-lished. To enter this market, a merger is a good choice for us,” said Mr. Ko. He pointed out that the business for Building Automation places a heavy emphasis on localization, and requires an in-depth understanding of the target market and establishing a close relationship with customers. “Contrary to the ODM business, customers will not offer a spec and the requirements they provide sometimes might contradict each other.” Because of this, sales staff needs to get a clear picture of the actual situation so that they can offer the most suitable solution, and these capabilities must be accumulated through time and experience. To speed up Delta’s entry into the building automa-tion field, we will leverage the foundation and brand reputation of Delta Controls and LOYTEC in North America and Europe. Currently, the two companies will stay relatively independent in terms of operations.

“The primary goal for now is to help the two companies grow quickly and profitably,” said Mr. Ko, expressing his expectations. In addition to mutual assistance, the two parties are now actively seeking other possibilities for cooperation, hoping to offer more complete products and services for building automation through agency or the integration of products. At the same time, they can introduce a wider range of products at the right time for a total solution.

During the simultaneous merger of the two BA companies, Mr. Ko drew a blueprint for managing each region. Both Delta Controls and LOYTEC have their businesses in Europe and the Americas. To centralize resources and cater to the emphasis on localization by the industry, coordination with the two companies is underway. The hope is that Delta Control and LOYTEC will enjoy more rapid growth in North America and Europe respectively. “What we want is the maximization of resources and utility!” said Mr. Ko firmly.

As for the outward presentation of the brand, Mr. Ko thinks that a full discussion with the team should be carried out based on business strategy. The two companies have established brand awareness in their respective markets in North America and Europe, which is valuable for BA businesses that place a high emphasis on local operations. We will continue to communicate via these two brands. For trade shows, Mr. Ko spoke of the need to clearly present the brand structure with Delta as the mother company. Using “A Delta Group Company” as the linkage, the two brands can retain their own identities and styles at their show booths, as a way of maintaining current relationships with their partners.

Mr. Ko recalled his earlier work interactions at Delta. At that time, Delta’s culture of cohesiveness and the efforts of its employees in working toward the company’s interest impressed him deeply. Today, with the gradual expansion of the organization and changes in strategic direction, he pointed out that what Delta needs the most is cultivating a “collaborative” spirit. Delta’s past ODM operation left it with a solid techno-logical competency, with only one team needed to fulfill customer requirements independently. However, Delta is now positioned as a solutions provider, so the ability to cooperate across departments and fields is the key to success. “Treating requirements from other units as a first priority enables the gradual formation of this coopera-tive attitude,” said Mr. Ko, sharing his method of shaping a cooperative culture.

During the company’s transformation process, Mr. Ko encourages colleagues to have goals and a passion for whatever they do in whatever position. “Like three people on a construction site, when one asks them what they’re doing: The first one says he is laying brick, the second says he builds walls, and the third says he is building a church. Indeed, all three people are doing the same thing. The difference is that everyone has placed emphasis on the signifi-cance of what they do.” He also expects compa-ny managers to cultivate an appreciation for identifying talent that is dedicated to advancing the organization, which will provide opportunities and better prospects for the future.

Setting strategic direction and maximizing resources and utility

Encouraging a collaborative spirit and defining a vision for work

To encourage colleagues on innovation, Mr. Ko has judged the Delta Innovation Award for many years.

資訊安全已成為保障企業資產重要的一環

In March of this year, an employee of a renowned hard disk drive manufacturer received an email from someone who claimed to be the company CEO, requesting the employee to provide his 2015 employee tax information. The employee released the information without verifying the request, which caused a financial information leakage risk for the company and other employees. In an era that is highly dependent on internet communications, information securi-ty has become a crucial issue that enterprises must be prepared to face.

Delta’s information security team began to establish information security policies in November 2013. On May 14, 2014, after several months of preparations, the team began to conduct an awareness, promotion and training program on information security policies and information security for Delta’s employees all over the world. The policies mainly depict what are the information security areas employees should take note of, and what actions are prohibited. The major content includes: internet usage policy, company email usage policy, comput-er usage policy, antivirus /DLP deploy-ment and usage policy, storage media handling and security principles, pass-word guidelines, data backup and recovery policy, incident management policy, acceptable usage of mobile devices, encryption and encryption policy, equipment usage and handling policy, mobile computing and remote work policy, and remote access policy. These policies are drawn up according to the ISO27001 international standard.

In short, information security means to ensure the “security” of “information”. Information generally refers to digital content and paper documents that an organization creates, collects, processes, uses, transmits, stores, or destroys, in the process of achieving its operational goals. Such information includes: official documents issued and received, trade secrets, competitive intelligence, operations reports, core technologies, designs and draw-ings, program codes, purchase orders, personnel information, financial information, electronic mails, and more. The information can have great value and a far-reaching impact on an organization’s operations. During the infor-mation lifecycle, organizations need to ensure the “security” of important information, and not endanger the organization’s operations, or even survival due to information leakage, loss, tampering, or damage. How to truly and accurately ensure an enterprise’s internal information security has become a critical issue.

The Importance of Information Security

Delta’s information security team was established in November 2013, and its main responsibilities are to: establish information security polices/principles, review information security, apply information security tech-nologies, execute information security programs/projects, apply information security tools, promote informa-tion security awareness and conduct training, report and handle information security incidents, upgrade and manage the information security system, detect and scan for weakness in the information system, and generate information security reports.

Delta implemented a Data Loss Prevention (DLP) system that has the main objective of protecting the Company’s sensitive information from leakage. At present, Delta’s information security team, together with Delta’s business units all over the world, are inspecting and reviewing reports generated by the DLP system, while handling and rectifying information security incidents to achieve the objective of sensitive information protection.

According to the statistics of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the number of enterprise data thefts all over the world increased from 800 million in 2013 to 1 billion in 2014, and then decreased to 700 million in 2015. This figure does not indicate there is a decrease in hackers’ activities, as hackers have adopted more extreme techniques in recent years, such as encrypting victims’ computer data through ransomware, and then extorting money from the victims. If the victim refuses to pay the ransom, the attacker threatens to delete the data permanently. Another main attack trend is through Business Email Compromise (BEC). The hacker sends emails to victims by posing as a manager or senior executive, requesting a money transfer using reasons such as payment for goods, expenses due and company tax arrears, to a designated bank account, and gaining an illicit profit. The swindler makes use of similar email accounts, such as the same name (First Name, Last Name) but with similar domains after the @ sign to carry out the scam. This is especially common in handheld devices such as smart phones and tablet PCs. The victims normally do not check the source of an email address before trans-ferring money, resulting in losses. It is estimated that between October 2013 and August 2015, BEC caused a loss of USD 750 million for victims in US, and USD 2.3 billion globally.

Employees are normally the weakest link in enterprise information security. To increase Delta employee awareness of information security, the information security team conducts information security training and issues information security newsletters regularly to inform colleagues of the latest information security trends and hacking techniques. This allows Delta employees to cultivate appropriate informa-tion security working habits, such as: regular backup of important work materials, careful examination of email sources, not opening unknown web links, being extra cautious when handling sensitive infor-mation or finance-related matters, making it a habit to use the registered number for confirmations instead of the contact information provided in the email, avoiding using public cloud services such as Dropbox and Google Drive, avoiding providing too much personal or company information on social media websites. In this way, Delta employees can reduce the chances of information security incidents.

Future of MESFuture manufacturing execution systems (MES) solutions are designed to handle the dynamic routing and real optimization of production lines, provide the flexibility to facilitate dynamic customization and enhance the speed of shop-floor data management by reducing data flow lags across the shop floor. Future MES platform is equipped to interact with multiple suppliers across the value chain and integrated with analytical engines to enable automatic planning maintenance to increase production efficiency.

Frost & Sullivan’s research indicates that the core values of IIoT(Industrial Internet of Things), digitiza-tion, agile manufacturing, connectivity, supply chain Integration and data analytics, are enabling the future development of MES. The future MES is the IIoT-based solutions. The key functionalities of IIoT-based MES solutions include energy management, resource management, real-time machine utiliza-tion, integration capabilities, data management and interoperability. IIoT-based MES solutions can bring the benefits of machine downtime reduction, true cost understanding, increased machine utilization, enhanced product quality, increased material efficiency and energy optimization.

There are 3 challenges to IIoT-Enabled MES implementation. The first challenge is integration of legacy equipment. Legacy equipment work on different protocol standards and they require protocol conversion to enable machine-to-machine communication or form a connected factory. The second challenge is cyber security and data security. A significant amount of data is proprietary and is vulnerable to being hacked and misused. It is necessary to protect these data against external threats. The last one is skill develop-ment. The skills of workforce are needed to be upgraded to align with the needs of a modern MES solutions organization. The Continuous training programs also are needed to completely utilize new relevant modules.

Top 10 IoT Technologies for 2017 and 2018? The technologies and principles of IoT will have a very broad impact on organizations. For many organi-zations, the IoT will be a cornerstone of their digital business strategies, but it will also be very disrup-tive, requiring them to master many new technologies and capabilities.

Gartner discusses 10 IoT technologies in its resent research. Gartner advises these 10 IoT technologies can be likely on every organization's radar. These 10 IoT technologies are:

1.IoT Security: Security technologies will be required to protect IoT devices and platforms. IoT security will be complicated by the fact that many "things" use simple processors and operating systems that may not support sophisticated security approaches.

2.IoT Analytics: IoT demands new analytic approaches and new tools with the ability to operate on new data types, new technologies and new architectures.

3.IoT Device (Thing) Management: This includes device monitoring, firmware and software updates, diagnostics, crash analysis and reporting, physical management, and security management. Management tools must be capable of managing and monitoring thousands and perhaps even millions of devices.

4.Low-Power, Short-Range IoT Networks: One important cluster of IoT networking technologies is focused on short range (tens to hundreds of meters), long battery life (years), relatively low bandwidth, low endpoint cost and medium density (hundreds of adjacent devices). For example, such networks will be essential in the smart home and smart office.

5.IoT Processors: The processors used by IoT devices define many of their capabilities, such as security and encryption, power consumption, operating system, updatable firmware, and embedded device management agents.

6.IoT Operating Systems: Traditional operating systems (OSs) such as Windows and iOS were not designed for IoT applications. For IoT small devices, traditional operating systems consume too much power, need fast processors, need large menory and in some cases, lack features such as guaranteed real-time response. They also may not support the chips that IoT developers use.

7.Low-Power Wide-Area Networks: The long-term goal of a wide-area IoT network is to deliver data rates from hundreds of bits per second (bps) to tens of kilobits per second (kbps) with nationwide coverage, a battery life of around 10 years, endpoint hardware cost of around $5, and support for hundreds of thousands of devices connected to a base station or its equivalent.

8.Event Stream Processing: Some IoT applications will generate extremely high data rates that must be analyzed in real time. Traditional IT architectures that store and subsequently process data don't have the necessary performance to deliver real-time analysis of such data streams. To address such requirements, distributed stream computing platforms (DSCPs) have emerged. They typically use parallel architectures to process very high-rate data streams to perform tasks such as real-time analytics and pattern identification.

9.IoT platform: IoT platforms provide 3 services include low-level device control and operations, IoT data acquisition, transformation and management, and IoT application development.

10.IoT Standards and Ecosystems: Standards and their associated APIs will be essential because IoT devices will need to interoperate and communicate, and many IoT business models will rely on sharing data between multiple devices and organizations.

The Connected Home — A Move Toward Certified EcosystemsThe connected home market is currently at its peak of media hype; however, user uptake does not reflect this market hype. Traditional connected home players, such as D-Link and Belkin, are being challenged by an explosion of vendors selling single-line products as well as by new product ecosystems.

Gartner have identified three main categories of connected home solutions:

1.Do-it-yourself (DIY) solutions/ecosystemsThe user purchases a shrink-wrapped product which are designed for install without a service technician.

2.Service-based solutionsService-based solutions will charge a monthly fee for the provisioning of cloud-based services, professional installation and technical support, alongside the product solutions.

3.Certified ecosystemsCertified ecosystems require partners to be certified to attach to the ecosystem itself. Certified ecosys-tems are not exclusive. Single-product solutions, DIY ecosystems and even full-service ecosystems can be part of a certified one.

From Gartner’s survey in 2015, Gartner believe that as of the end of 2015, 95% of consumers involved with connected home products in mature markets were using some sort a DIY connected home solution, and only 5% were using some sort of service-based solution. However, the market is likely to change dramatically over the coming five years. Gartner expect 85% of consumers' connected home solutions will be linked to a certified ecosystem by 2020. If consumers continue to buy stand-alone solutions and DIY ecosystems, it would result in more apps and more complexity. Certified ecosystems may provide a larger network of products that works seamlessly together, a platform that acts intelligently and learns the users' behaviors, and ultimately and importantly has one single user interface and one app. Thus, to reduce complexity, certified ecosystems are thus likely to create better value for users.

Enjoy Summer Night Breeze with

Pokémon GO

For many years, the Foundation has been telling everyone: Don’t stay huddled indoors blasting the air-conditioner and watching TV! Turn off your electronic appliances and step outside to save energy and reduce carbon emissions; hanging out at cafés or department stores to “share” energy with others can also save electricity. Local govern-ments even organize activities such as summer concerts and summer solstice lights-out events to get people off their couches and outdoors. But let’s admit that few can resist the lure of indoor air conditioning in the summer. Everyone would rather be a refrigerated couch potato!

However, something miraculous has happened! As the hottest summer ever recorded descended upon us in August 2016, Pokémon GO was launched in Taiwan. All at once, hundreds of thousands of players willingly stepped outdoors to capture virtual creatures. They turned off the lights and air conditioners and sweated without complaint! I believe this game produces much better electricity-saving results than the campaigns the government has invested so much public funds in.

Pokémon is short for Pocket Monsters. Many people may have played Pokémon on Game Boy or watched the same-titled animation on TV when they were children. More than ten years have passed, and this new game has been born. Differing from the conventional video games, it integrates the new technology of Augmented Reality (AR). Players must venture outdoors to capture hundreds of different Pokémon species, including Pikachu. They have to visit PokéStops to stock up on Poké Balls, clock up walking distance to “hatch eggs”, and battle at Pokémon Gyms located at different corners of the city to earn PokéCoins and experience points.

The game mechanics encourage players to forego air-conditioning and brave the sweltering heat outdoors to catch Pokémon. Several players have been heard to mention the same thing: they love the cool summer night breeze and think it’s more comfortable than air conditioning. Players are even willing to get off the bus a few stops earlier and walk to work just to hatch eggs. Some office workers are starting to commute by bus because the slow bus speed enables them to capture more Pokémon. Commuters set off early in the morning to challenge other players at Pokémon Gyms. In so doing, they successfully avoid the rush hour crowds and get to enjoy longer battles.

Breaking out of daily routines helps office workers and students gradually get used to the natural breeze and walking, or commuting by bus. The low-carbon lifestyle that has been generated by the Pokémon GO phenomenon is truly unexpected.

This game originates from Pokémon, a series of handheld video games that debuted in 1996 and was inspired by insect collecting, a pastime which the creator, Satoshi Tajiri, enjoyed as a child. When he created the game, he hoped that children of the new generation, who do not get to play in nature, will be encouraged to engage with the natural world. Twenty years on, today, not only do we see the Pokémon generation gathered in city parks and squares for these pocket monsters, but also children who have never watched the animation, and even fifty- and sixty-year-old grannies and grand-pas can be found excitedly exchanging information and sharing the joy of rare Pokémon captures. Children also discover common ground for conversations with their parents as they venture out together to catch these virtual creatures.

Another phenomenon brought about by Pokémon GO is crowded parks. Bihu Park, Beitou Park, Nanliao Fish Port, Chao-jing Park and Zhonghe No. 4 Park have become popular places where players flock for Pokémon hunting. They even gather in pocket parks dotted across the metropolis, chatting with the exercising elderlies and playing with the dogs owned by nearby residents, as they capture Pokémon. The neighborhood relations have instantly become harmonious.

“I’ve lived in this area for a long time but I’ve never stepped into this park!” I often hear players make this remark in passing. Seniors who visit the parks to enjoy the cool breeze every day are accustomed to the greenery and facilities. However, youngsters in general did not hang around in the community so often in the past and may not have had the chance to enjoy the parks fully. Now, because of a mobile game, people are paying attention to the environmental quality of public areas in the neighborhood, such as the walkability of sidewalks, the number of green trees and the odor of the ponds. If this results in subsequent improvements, it can be regarded as a positive step towards development.

The modes of transportation are now low-carbon, the most energy-hungry air conditioners and lights have also been temporarily turned off, and the neighborhood relations have greatly improved; playing Pokémon GO in the summer night is like a beautiful dream come true. However, I believe its greatest advantage lies in its benefits to mental and physical health. Pokémon GO encourages people to venture outdoors, away from the horrible night-time political talk shows and soap operas, to enjoy the cool breeze and let it clear their minds. Long hours spent sitting in an air-con-ditioned room slows down the metab-olism; leaving the air-conditioned environment and devoting oneself to walking and capturing Pokémon allows one to sweat and become healthier.

As of early September, Pokémon GO has been downloaded 500 million times worldwide. If just one-fifth of the players can culti-vate a healthy and low-carbon lifestyle, or stop watching those political talk shows, I believe the world will become a much better place.

Along with the growing popularity of Pokémon GO, millions of players willingly turn off the air conditioners and lights at home to “take a walk” and capture Pokémon outdoors.
