By the age of twelve, Thierry had already shown an interest in classical guitar. Three years later, Alvaro Pierri welcomed him to his classes where he further developed his natural dexterity, musicality and sense of rhythm while adding remarquable depth to his interpretations. Since 2004, Thierry has earned honours in many Competitions including: Concours Jeunes Artistes de Radio-Canada, Concours international de Lachine, Concours de musique du Choeur de la montagne, Concours de Bas-Richelieu, Festival-Concours de musique de Sherbrooke, National finals at the National music Festival in New Brunswick, National Finals at the Canadian Music and Grand prix de guitare in Montreal. In 2011 he won first prize in the Spanish international competition in Elche. He also won first prize in the Spanish International Competition in Coria and Petrer as well as the People’s Choice Award in 2013. In April 2014 he won the Brussels International Guitar Competition. Thierry has taken part in several Master classes,

notably with Sergio Assad, Roberto Aussel, Denis Azabagic, Remi Boucher, Judicael Perroy, Pavel Steidel, Roland Dyens, Margarita Escarpa and others of international renown. He completed a Masters degree in Interpretation under Alvaro Pierri at Laval University in Quebec. In addition to his musical studies, he is an avid linguist and speaks Spanish, English, German and is beginning to tackle Italian, Portuguese and Russian. Thierry Begin-L has numerous concerts in his credit in Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Normandy, the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Argentine, Lichtenstein, Finland and Canada. In Quebec he has played, notably, with I Musici and the Choeur de la Montagne, with L’Atelier lyrique de Montreal, L’institut d’études méditerranéennes de Montréal and the Festival de Jazz.

Suffering from Tourette Syndrome, Thierry found in music a way to diminish the frequency of the spasms.

THIERRY BEGIN-LAMONTAGNE : A prizewinning master of the guitar in Brussels

PRESS REVIEW

Cowansvillian Thierry Bégin-Lamontagne has again distinguished himself in the European music scene, this time in Brussels.

CLASSICAL GUITAR. Winning a prize in Europe was the objective of a 27 years old Cowansvillian. On April 27 last, Thierry Bégin-Lamontagne won the first prize in the “Nicholas Alfonso” International Classical Guitar Competition in Brussels. This is the fifth time that the young man has seen his talents rewarded since his first visit to the old continent. His mother, Joanne Bégin, who often accompanies her son on the piano, mentioned proudly that the judges “were unanimous in awarding the prize to Thierry, because of his extraordinary musicality, something rarely seen according to them. He is a real magician of the musical note.” This distinction will allow the guitarist, who completed his master’s course a year ago, to use a scholarship of 3000 Euros. During 2015 he will perform in a series of recitals in Belgium and France. He can count also on support by the label DotGuitar who will distribute an MP3 album on the Web and in the most popular formats, (iTunes, Amazon).

In the meantime, he will perform 20 concerts in, and tour, six different countries in South America. The guitarist started this tour yesterday in Madrid, where “he was on stage for two hours, because the audience didn’t want him to leave.” said his mother proudly. He will return to Quebec in August, before packing his suitcases for Argentina in October for another series of concerts.

A sound of a seizing refinement

PRESS REVIEW

Baroque and classical Spanish works. His programme consisted of baroque and classical Spanish works, as well as Italian pieces. His magnificent interpretations of the “Sevilla” and the “Mallorca” by Albéniz, the “Tres Piezas” of Rodrigo along with the “Collectici intim” by Vincent Asencio, were complex, moving and coloured. In fact, they alone were enough to convince us of the competence of the young guitarist. The artistic talent of Thierry Bégin-Lamontagne manifested itself again during his interpretation of three other pieces taken from Bach’s “Chaconne”, a work written by the master of Baroque on the death of his wife. This work metamorphosed into a profound emotional elegy under the fingers of this naturally disconcerting guitarist. Music lovers had the impression of slowly and gradually passing through all the stages of mourning, before being impressed anew by Giuliani’s “Rossiniana No.3". Rossini’s operas renewed by the virtuosity and technique of Guiliani, comprise overtures, marches as well as arias composed for a six string orchestra. This work was brilliantly performed by the young Canadian whose disconcerting style and “authentic” interpretation were marked by bravery, vivacity and boldness. The variations on the “Carnival of Venice” by Paganini reached the same level: a jewel which Thierry Bégin-Lamontagne interpreted in a lively, humourous manner, before a totally enthralled audience..

The classical guitarist, Thierry Bégin-Lamontagne is making his mark, far from the beaten paths. Born to a family of musicians, he learned early on how to play various instruments, the violin being the last on the list. At the age of twelve he chose the classical guitar as his main instrument. However, it was well before that age that he seems to have absorbed the characteristics of a good interpretation, which he later adapted to the guitar creating a refined sonority, contrasting execution, as well as expressive, frank and melodic. It was with all these qualities,

accompanied by a very musical execution, that the sympathetic Canadian has an almost carefree attitude to the enthusiastic audience at the 113th Meisterkonzert Klassiche Gitarre im Kunstmuseum. .
