It is lovely to see all of our students returning and many new families joining us. Berkeley Vale School is a very busy school that provides so many opportunities for all students. Two of these included the Colour Run and the Athletics Carnival, both held at the end of last term. If you had the pleasure of attending one of these events you would have seen the amazing organisation and the enthusiasm not only from our students but also our staff. I would like to officially welcome Ms Lucie Norman who has taken up the permanent position of Deputy Principal at Berkeley Vale PS. Lucie comes to us with enormous skill and knowledge, not only in student welfare but also in curriculum. As you would be aware from previous newsletters, our other Deputy Principal Mr Darrell Keirnan this year is working Monday to Wednesday, and Mr Chad Tsakissiris is relieving Deputy Principal on Thursday and Friday. There are some exciting things happening this term and it is important for parents to keep informed via the newsletter, School App, our new electronic sign (which will be operational in the next few weeks) and our 5 week calendar that is attached to this newsletter. This term we will be celebrating our NAIDOC (National Abo- rigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) day on Tuesday 21 July; children are invited to wear black, yellow and red clothing to school this day. On this day we will be celebrating the history, culture and achieve- ments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. More information on our celebrations will appear in next week’s newsletter. Last night was our P&C meeting for July. At this meeting the P&C handed over a cheque for $40 000 to the school to buy mathematics resources. This money is valuable and will provide many hands-on resources that will be used throughout our school on a daily basis, resources that are vital in everyday teaching and learn- ing. When these items have been purchased and deliv- ered we will be proving an opportunity for all parents to view and gain an understanding of their use at a P&C meeting. The P&C were successful in securing a grant through Mingara Recreation Club to allow teachers to access online teaching resources to help plan and imple- ment activities and strategies within their class. Many thanks to every parent who has supported the P&C by buying tickets, attending a fundraiser or participating in an activity, this money is going directly back to your child and their education. Our school will again be taking part in the Woolworths Earn and Learn program where for each $10 you spend at Woolworths you get 1 token. We collect the tokens and trade them for educational Science resources for our school. The program will run from July 15 to Tues- day 8 September. There will be a collection box in the front office or take your tokens to your class teacher. Education Week Open Day We are holding an Open Day on Wednesday 29 July during Education Week and we would like to invite all parents/grandparents/carers to visit classrooms from 11.30 – 12.30 p.m. followed by entertainment in the CoolZone between 12.30—1.00 p.m. then enjoy lunch with their children, finishing at 1:35 p.m. A note with further details will be sent home. Parents and guests are welcome to attend. The Zone Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 14 August and all students who have qualified will be notified this week. Friday Sport for Years 3-6 (including 2/3A) officially commenc-es in Week 2 on 24 July. Berkeley Vale PS has been lucky enough to secure bookings from the NRL Development for League Tag and Football NSW for Soccer clinics. League Tag comes at no cost and will run from Weeks 2-6 and Soccer is only $8 (a one-off payment), running from Weeks 7-10. Both clinics encourage participation, teach new skills and present the students with gift packs. Sport will take place at Kurraba Oval and permission notes will be issued this week. Try-outs for the BVPS Boys and Girls Touch teams will take place next week. Mr Morton is still basking in the glory of win-ning a State Touch KO last year and will no doubt instil confi-dence and skill into our new teams. Mr Little and Mrs Austin will also be conducting try-outs for our Boys and Girls Basket-ball teams next week.

Colour Run Berkeley Vale Public Schools first colour run was held at the end of Term 2 and what a success it was. With over 600 stu-dents and 30 eager parents taking part in the race we man-aged to raise close to $8000 towards literacy resources for the school. The course was fun and challenging with students crossing the finish line with a smile on their face, colour all over them, and lots of huffing and puffing. Teachers turned snipers and made sure that everyone was super soaked! A few teachers excelled, particularly Mrs Davidson who managed to surprise Ms Armour with a sneak attack. A big thank you must go to all the staff who helped on the day, especially Mr Bauer, Miss Farrugia , Mr Little and Mr Walsh who organised and made the day such a huge success. Keep an eye out for the new improved version in 2016.

Under 10’s Rugby League Our team played their All Schools Carnival last Friday 12 June at Lake Munmorah. We played 5 games for 3 wins and 2 close losses. Our wins were 18-0 against Brisbania, 24-6 against Gosford and 18-0 against Budgewoi. We had a close 10-0 loss to Terrigal in our 3rd game. We had to wait to see if we had made the semi finals. After a long wait we were drawn to play Bateau Bay in the Knockout Semi final; our 5th match of the day. After a tough game we just lost 12-6. What a great effort by all of our boys. A big thank you to all the parents who helped with your positive support and help with transport. A huge thanks from all the team to Riley’s dad, Mick Jones. Mick coached the boys and arranged 2 or 3 training sessions. Thanks Mick for volunteering your time.
