Do you agree?
Good writing is good communication. We can understand what the writer is saying.
Bad writing is poor communication. We have trouble understanding what the writer is saying.

The message doesn’t reach the receivers.
What Went Wrong?

There’s a problem with the receivers
•Distracted•Bored•Inattentive•Tired•Can’t Hear the Message•Can’t Understand the Message

There’s a problem with the sender….
•Voice—too low or hard to understand•Speaks in a Monotone•Speaks the wrong language

There’s a problem with the message

The Message Is Confusing

The Message Is Poorly Written

The Message Doesn’t Make Sense

What Mistake Does the Writer Make In This Essay? (Hint: Compare Message & Audience) Teacher’s Assignment: Describe a lesson learned in
life about ethics and morals for your ENG 120 class. Detail a personal experience with shoplifting. Consider the consequences of stealing.
Student’s Essay: Isn't it great how life has its ways of teaching us
lessons? We all have been taught a lesson or two in life, and they aren't the kind that you learn in school either. These are the life lessons that you learn through experiences. They are the ones that stick with you. One very important lesson I learned was that shoplifting can get you into a whole crap load of problems. Hopefully, you can learn from what I did before I got caught, when I got caught and the consequences of getting caught.

Academic vs. Informal Writing Does this writer understand that academic
writing is more formal than a conversation with friends?
Does he match the message (the essay) to the audience (the academic professor)?
You try it. With a partner, read the last paragraph from the student’s essay. Identify the words/phrases/expressions that do not belong because they are too informal or simply inappropriate for academic writing. Correct them if you can by using more formal, academic language.

.
In conclusion, I hope you have learned that shoplifting is wrong from my explanation of my past "jobs" that I have pulled, when I got caught and the consequences I endured. Through it all I realized that shoplifting is bad not only because it hurts the companies you are stealing from, but it also can get you in some real trouble. I was lucky to not have to deal with the cops, others aren't so lucky. In all, through my experience with this I learned that the juice is not worth the squeeze. I hope you did too.
