ORDER OF WORSHIP August 16, 2020 – 8:00/9:00/10:00 a.m. Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost Theme: King David’s Broken Family As We Gather Over the last couple of Sundays, we have been doing short stories of the Old Testa- ment; I guess you could call it character studies. First, was the Wisdom of Abigail; last Sunday/Monday was Solomon, How the Mighty Have Fallen. Today, another tragic story filled with sex, murder, cover-ups, ambitions, political intrigue, and pow- er struggles all found in one family. The family? King David and his children. Prayer Before Worship Father, we come before You in Jesus’ name with shouts of joy, we worship You with gladness that fills our hearts and with songs of joy before the Lord. Father, we declare today that the Lord is God and that we are Yours; we give You praise because we know that we are Your people and the sheep of Your pasture. Father, we enter Your gates with thanksgiving and Your courts with praise, we give thanks to You God and we praise Your name. Father, we Your people declare today that the Lord is good and His love endures forever. We praise You because Your faithfulness continues through all generations. If you share our beliefs regarding the Lord’s Supper, we welcome you to our altar. If you would like to receive a gluten-free wafer or de-alcoholized wine, please let the Pastor or Elder know when you are at the table. Non- communing children and adults may receive a blessing from the Pastor, indicated by folding your arms across your chest as a sign you are not communing. Prelude Rick Helderop, piano Opening Hymn 4 God Himself Is Present 1. God Himself is present: let us now adore Him And with awe appear before Him. God is in His temple All within keep silence, prostrate lie with deepest rev’rence. Him alone God we own, Him, our God and Savior; Praise His name forever. 2. God Himself is present: hear the harps resounding; See the hosts the throne surrounding! “Holy, holy, holy” Hear the hymn ascending, songs of saints and angels blending. Bow Thine ear to us here: Hear, O Christ, the praises that Thy church now raises. 3. O Thou Fount of blessing, purify my spirit, Trusting only in Thy merit. Like the holy angels, Who behold Thy glory, may I ceaselessly adore Thee. Let Thy will ever still rule Thy church terrestrial as the hosts celestial. Order of Service for Holy Communion P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgive- ness. Our help is in the name of the Lord. C: Who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. C: And Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. P&C: O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto Thee all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended Thee and justly deserved Thy temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray Thee of Thy bound- less mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Old Testament Reading 2 Samuel 13:21-22 (King David’s Troubled Home) When King David heard all this, he was furious. And Absalom never said a word to Amnon, either good or bad; he hated Amnon because he had disgraced his sister Tamar. Epistle Reading Hebrews 12:9-11 (The Father’s Love For Us) Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They dis- ciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Response: Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah! Gospel Announcement Response: Glory be to Thee, O Lord! Gospel Reading Matthew 7:9-12 (Our Faithful Heavenly Father) “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Rev. Randall J. Schlak

Prayer of the ChurchHoly Spirit, promised comforter, you have made our hearts your dwelling place and claim our bodies to be the temples of our God. What you cause to come from us is good. What we prompt within ourselves is not. Help us to walk in your light. There is a tedious struggle within us, for our instincts and desires war against the ways that you would have us follow. As you have rescued us, now direct us. Show in our lives the evidence of your indwelling. Bless all those who call on you, and today we remember: (petitions spoken by the pastor)

be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil;

C: For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Institution (spoken by the Pastor)

The Pax DominiP: The peace of the Lord be with you always!C: Amen. The Agnus DeiO Christ Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. The Distribution of Holy Communion h The wafers are in plastic bags with 1 to 3 wafers in each bag. h The wine is in individual plastic containers with lids. h Each family unit will be invited forward by an usher to receive the elements after

they are blessed. h We will have two tables to serve two groups at a time. h Pastor or Elder (masked) will bring the appropriate count of the elements to the

h Once done, you will take plastic bags and the containers with lids and place them in the receptacle that will be near the tables and you will go back to your seats.

h We will do this in a most reverent manner. I know it will seem strange to cel-ebrate the Eucharist in such a different way than we are accustomed, but our goal is to be as safe as we can and not put anyone’s health in jeopardy.

h If you do not feel comfortable receiving communion then please do not come forward. We want our worship environment to feel safe for all.

Benediction and Response: Amen! Amen! Amen!

Closing Hymn 47 Savior, Again to Thy Dear Name We Raise(Favorite hymn of Jeanie Buechner)

1. Savior, again to Thy dear name we raise With one accord our parting hymn of praise. Once more we bless Thee ere our worship cease, Then, lowly bending, wait Thy word of peace.

2. Grant us Thy peace upon our homeward way; With Thee began, with Thee shall end, the day. Guard Thou the lips from sin, the hearts from shame, That in this house have called upon Thy name.

3. Grant us Thy peace, Lord, through the coming night; Turn Thou for us its darkness into light. From harm and danger keep Thy children free; For dark and light are both alike to Thee.

WOMEN’S MINISTRYWOMEN’S MINISTRYThe Bee Lady who was due to arrive in August with an abundant knowledge of bees, hives, pollination and products made by and from bees has postponed her vis-it until September. We will hope to have her when things are safe. There is so much to learn about bees and the gift they bring as so many of our fruits and vegeta-bles, plants and fl owers depend on their visits. Come and learn with us. Time/date to be announced. Hang in there!

To all Redeemer Family, Friends and Extended Family! This March virtually everything on our calendars was cancelled including this year's production of "The Passion Play" in Oberammergau, Germany. This was very disappointing, since the play only occurs during the summer months every ten years. We have rebounded from the disappointing cancellation to announce that the new dates for the next performances have been selected. And you don't have to wait 10 more years to go! We are now rescheduled for our trip to Germany and Austria. The new dates are July 29 - August 8, 2022. So, if you had been contemplating the trip and decided not to attend, you have a second chance to join us on this trip of a lifetime! New itineraries are located in the church main offi ce. Please take one, review it and call Leslie Whitfi eld if you have any questions. It would be wonderful to have you join us and experience this historical and extraordinary event fi rst hand. Contact Leslie by phone, 248-330-8685 or email, whitfi [email protected].

There is a stack of the new Portals of Prayer for July-September on a small table outside the door of the Town Square (west entrance) for anyone who wishes to pick one up. You can also go on www.cph.org and read the portals of prayer devotion each day as well.

If you lose a loved one at this time, we are once again using the sanctuary for funeral & memorial services and limiting it to 100 people. Please contact the church offi ce or the Pastors to make arrangements.

When sponsoring fl owers, PLEASE write a SEPARATE CHECK - do NOT include it in one

check with your weekly off ering. Thank you!

Virtual Choir in memory and honor of Fred Rohrbach

Any interested singer at Redeemer is invited to join members of the Chancel Choir as we record a virtual choir piece in honor and memory of the late Fred Rohrbach, former director of mu-sic at Redeemer. The song is The Lord Bless You and Keep You by Peter Lutkin. It is one that we have sung for many years at Redeemer. If you would like to participate, please e-mail Steve SeGraves at home ASAP ([email protected]). If you reach out to Steve he will send you all the information you need to participate, including the digital sheet music. Come join us in paying tribute to a long-time member and friend of Redeemer!

Strong Interest Inventory!Strong Interest Inventory! Dr. Sandy Pourcho has set up an opportunity for Redeemer’s youth to take a career assessment, the Strong Interest Inven-tory. If your child is in middle school or high school, then he/she can take this online assessment for only $18.00! After the test is taken, you will receive a detailed report of your child’s interests and strengths that can help with decisions about the future – like educational paths and career choices. The report even shows job openings that match the results! PLUS – Dr. Pourcho will even give some of her time and sit down with you to go over the results, free of charge! If you are interested, or to learn more, please contact Laura ([email protected]).

I know we had to put this program on hold but we will be putting the bags together at the beginning of fall. If you took a balloon off the wall and have not had a chance to return your item there will be a collection box at the services. You can also drop it off at church outside Nicole’s offi ce. If you are unable to participate please let Nicole know. If you would still like to buy an item please contact Nicole at 248-644-4010 ext.124 or email [email protected] and she can let you know what is still needed.

Redeemer’s middle schoolers & high schoolers (and their families) are invited to serve at Camp Re-store in Detroit NEXT Saturday 8/22 from 9am – 3pm! This is a GREAT opportunity to get a head start on service hours for school or Confi rmation, or just simply to help out our neighbors in Detroit! We will be serving inside buildings and outside buildings (with so-cial distancing and masks, of course!). Your child can attend or your whole family can attend! If you’d like to participate, please sign up via the church website. Please contact Gia, Eric, or Laura with ques-tions or for more information.
