Second Sunday of Advent Reflection At the time of John’s ministry there were in the desert religious groups who multiplied purification rites. John, however, preached a unique baptism before the judgment, and that baptism was a baptism of repentance. With a pro-phetic insight, he sees the axe which already strikes at the foundations of the entire world. John announces that with the coming of the kingdom, a crisis is very near, a crisis which we will only be able to face through penance, the fruit of conversion. Is he not Elijah who has come back for the conversion of all things by fire? Among his hearers we find men of importance who will bring upon Jesus suffering and pain. John foresees them burning as straw after the harvest. But as the “Voice” of the Messiah he considers himself unworthy of preceding Jesus. His baptism is only of water, not of the Spirit. We acknowledge our uneasiness before this hard and pure prophet. We must recognize that the God who is both awesome and merciful manifests His power both in the clap of thunder and in the gentle breeze. The Baptist’s message calls Jew and Christian to the realization that we come under God’s judgment by living in God’s love. “For a stern as death is love...its flames are a blazing fire” (Song of Songs 8:6). The Baptist keeps us from taking lightly God’s love for us. His gospel is an Advent text which forces us to look toward the appearance of the King, who from this day until the last day, separates the chaff from the wheat.

IT’S BEEN A LOOOONG TIME SINCE MY LAST CONFESSION This Advent season, each Catholic parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh will have their doors open and lights on Wednesday, Dec. 14 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. (Holy Sepulcher will have confessions from 6:00-6:45, Mass at 7:00 pm, and confessions after Mass until 9:00 pm.) If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. “The Light is On For You”, especially if you haven’t been to confession in a while.

Eucharistic Adoration Day On Wednesday, December 7 we will have our monthly Eucharistic Adoration Day. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed from 9:00 am - 6:30 pm. This is a great opportunity for us to spend some personal time with Our Lord during this special day. Sometimes the burdens of our lives can be so demanding, that the Lord asks us to let Him help us carry them. Sign up sheets will posted in the Narthex with hours that will be open and in need of volunteers.

“Jesus wants us all to come to Him in

the Blessed Sacrament. He is

there is person, just waiting for you.

Nowhere on Earth are you more welcome, nowhere on Earth are you more loved, than by Jesus

truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.” -Mother Theresa

The Immaculate Conception We celebrate the first moment of Mary’s existence as a wonderful springtime of Grace. This does not in any way suggest that God is playing whimsically with the law of human solidarity in sin. Mary is no “spoiled child” of her father. By affirming, after long reflection, that the Virgin never lost her original innocence and that she is the new Eve, the Church affirms nothing more than the salvation of the one who was to become Mother of the Savior. She was

redeemed by God, in a unique and pre-eminent way, through her saving work of her Son. Her whole life was one of fidelity to a vocation wondrously announced, “Hail Full of Grace”! This is good news for the entire world, the optimistic as-surance that, in the universe of salvation, God is faithful to His promise. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Mass schedule for the Holy Day is:

Wednesday, December 7 at 7:00 pm Thursday, December 8 at 9:00 am and 7:00 pm.

On behalf of the parish community, I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations to all of those who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Monday, December 5, 2016 at 7:00 pm. The Most Reverend David A. Zubik, Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, will administer the Sacrament.

This is a great day in the lives of our Confirmation Candidates. It is a time for them to take a step toward assuming responsibility for their own faith and for decisions related to the faith. It is not, however, a time for them to be left completely on their own to make decisions. You, as parents, are still in charge. As such, you are responsible to see the promises you made at their Baptism are still kept.

The importance of the Sacrament of Confirmation in today’s world cannot be overstated. It is also not just a social event, which is then soon forgotten. Confirmation means we are given the Gifts of God, through the Holy Spirit, to meet the challenges of life. The important concepts in the description of Confirmation are “gifts” and “challenges”. The Gifts we receive in the Sacrament of Confirmation are:

wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, piety, fortitude and fear of the Lord.

Every person who is confirmed receives these special gifts. We need them every moment of our lives. It is these gifts, which help us meet the challenges of everyday life. I would like to offer a special thank you to the parents of our Confirmation Candidates. They are the first teachers who train the Candidates in the practice of their faith. Also, a very special thank you to our dedicated Faith Formation team. Let us continue to remember and pray for the youth of our parish, who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this Monday. Fr. Bob Cedolia

Advent Penance Service Monday, December 19

Advent is a time for preparation, when we get ready to celebrate the mystery of Our Lord’s coming as man, the beginning of our redemption. Advent also moves us to look forward with hope to the Second Coming of Christ when God’s plan of salvation will be brought to fulfillment. We are reminded, too, of Our Lord’s coming to each of us at the hour

of our death. We must make sure that He will find us prepared for His coming as the Gospel tells us “Blessed are those who are found awake when the Lord comes.” (Luke 12:37). This Service of Penance, which will be celebrated on December 19 at 7:00 pm, is meant to make us ready in mind and heart for the Coming of Christ, which we are soon to celebrate in the Mass of Christmas. We encourage all adults, high school and grade school students to attend this evening with their families. There will be six priests available that evening for the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation). See the back page of this week’s bulletin for additional Penance Services in the area.

Please pray for the peaceful repose of the souls of Deacon James

Mickens (Husband of Janice) and Howard Cornibe, Sr. who recently

passed away and are enjoying everlasting life.

We proudly welcome Annistin Helen

Salopek and Mariana Marie Wolf

who were recently baptized into the faith. Annistin is the daughter of Thomas

and Haley Salopek and Mariana is the daughter of Erik and Savannah Wolf.

EVANGELIZATION Over the past several weeks, we’ve looked at the many ways that evangelization is defined and understood. Jesus Christ is the heart of evangelization, synthesized by Bishop Zubik in his call for us to “Learn Jesus, Love Jesus, Live Jesus.” He helps us to concretely respond to this call by proposing eight building blocks of “The Church Evangelizing!” I find these concrete steps very helpful in thinking about evangelization in action. The first building block: 1. Practice Hospitality. The New Testament tells us, “Do not ne-

glect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly enter-tained angels” (Heb 13:2). Throughout his ministry, Jesus exer-cised the virtue of hospitality. He talked with people, wanted to know them, feed them, cared for their physical and emotional needs. Consider his encounter with the woman at the well. He talked with her, clearly showing that he cared about her (Jn 4:1-42). He had compassion and concern for those who came to hear him preach, so he fed the crowds (Mk 6:30-44). He reached out to the outcast who felt unworthy, uncomfortable among the other people, as we see in the case of Zacchaeus the tax collector (Lk 19:1-10). With the practice of hospitality, hearts and minds are opened, ready to receive the Good News that is Jesus Himself.

which fills the minds of those who find him.

We ask in the name of Jesus the Lord.

Amen
