PROGRAMME OF CULTURAL EVENTS

DUBLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL // 26 FEBRUARY - 8 MARCHThe Dublin International Film Festival, sponsored by Virgin Media, is Ireland’s premier event, taking place in February each year. DIFF curates and presents the best in emerging international and Irish film and moving image culture for a wide audience through its flagship annual festival, which aims to offer memorable experiences through audience interaction and engagements with filmmakers, actors and industry professionals, along with informed debate about the future of film as an art form. Marking the centenary of one of cinema’s most prolific auteurs, Federico Fellini, in this year’s edition DIFF will celebrate the filmmaker’s work through a very special series of free concerts across the city, in collaboration with the IIC and the Screen Composers Guild. Viva Fellini highlights the music of Fellini’s close collaborator and esteemed composer, Nino Rota. Focusing on some of the greatest musical work across Fellini’s filmography, the concerts will feature music from La Strada (1954), La Dolce Vita (1960), Il Bidone (1955) and Amarcord (1973). These performances take place at different locations throughout the city with renditions of Rota’s work performed by The Tiny Quartet, a Dublin based ensemble who put their unique stamp on any music that they lay their hands on. From David Bowie to Spandau Ballet, from The Prodigy to Future Islands, they span the decades with their strikingly eclectic performances, veering effortlessly from beautiful, melodic bliss to fiery, foot-stomping dance tunes. They are Sarah Lynch on violin, Donal Gunne on guitar, and Graham Heaney on double bass. For Viva Fellini, the quartet will be joined by the super talented Alison Reynolds on saxophone, bringing the soundtrack of Fellini to the streets of Dublin. LUNEDÌ AL CINEMA Lunedì al Cinema / Monday at the Cinema is a series of screenings dedicated to Italian contemporary cinema, made possible thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. IL CINEMA DEI PICCOLIIl Cinema dei Piccoli is back! The Blackwater Valley Opera Festival was established in 2010 by a small group of opera professionals and is Ireland’s only summer opera festival. The Festival attracts international visitors to the heritage town of Lismore and the scenic Blackwater Valley where audiences can discover emerging new talent performing alongside international stars of the classical music world. The opera itself is held in the breathtakingly beautiful surroundings of Lismore Castle and Gardens on the shores of the Blackwater River. Lismore Castle, the privately-owned residence of the Duke of Devonshire and his family, plays host to intimate, close-up opera in the transformed upper stables in the grounds of the castle by kind permission of Lord and Lady Burlington. The Festival believes in nurturing young talent, providing opportunities for up and coming artists, and also in introducing the next generation to the beauty of classical music and opera. According to historiography, the economic boom in Italy started in 1956: 11 years after the end of World War II, Italy had been rebuilt and was propelled toward its own destiny of industrial leadership. However, its territory continued to show signs of what had happened: bombed cities, shattered families, broken individual identities. This talk by Giancarlo Alfano, introduced by Enrica Maria Ferrara, will revolve around some great Italian narratives of those times, which show what ties together the devastation of war and the enthusiasm of reconstruction.

The IIC, in collaboration with Nowhere Music, is delighted to present the first “Italian Records Night”. We selected a number of DJs based in Dublin (both beginners and experts) to play their Italian LPs loud and clear on a fantastic Hi-Fi system kindly provided by The Big Romance. We will play some jazz, rock, indie, punk, soundtracks, post rock, Italian songwriters, electronics, pop and rare Italian psychedelia. It will be an open decks night, so feel free to bring your own records: we will find a spot for you on our playlist!

The story of the Jews of Italy is characterised by successful cultural innovation and an exciting intellectual tradition. The presence of Jews in Rome pre-dated Christianity and, while the ghetto of Venice marked a period of separation, it was the rise of fascism and the introduction of the racial laws in 1938 that led to the further persecution and mass murder of the Jewish community. This event commemorates the lives and culture of the Jews of Italy and will include a screening of Il Ghetto di Venezia by Emanuela Giordano (Tangram Film) and an interview to Liliana Segre by Moni Ovadia from Binario 21, by Moni Ovadia and Felice Cappa. Shaping Italian society with Niamh Cullen, Patrick McGauley and John Foot In English

This event marks the publication of two new books exploring Italy’s recent history from different angles. Patrick McGauley’s Matera, 1945-1960: The History of a ‘National Disgrace’ is a case study of Italy’s ‘southern question’ and ideas of national shame, while Love, Honour and Jealousy: The Intimate history of the Italian Economic Miracle by Niamh Cullen (Queen’s University, Belfast) explores the impact of the post-war ‘economic miracle’ on the emotional lives of Italian families. John Foot, renowned historian of modern Italy, will introduce and discuss the books with their authors.

The “man who didn’t change history” was a university professor: Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli, esteemed Italian scholar of Roman art, a founding father of modern archaeology and staunchly anti-fascist. Things came to a head over Hitler’s famous journey to Italy in 1938, when Bandinelli was invited to accompany Mussolini and the Führer, serving as tour guide and interpreter at the museums and archaeological sites, face to face with the two dictators for four whole days. He soon realised that history was offering him an amazing opportunity: he could stop them for good if he wanted…

When the toys discover Scarafoni’s plans to sell them off come Christmas morning, they rebel and start a journey to give themselves to the children they choose. In 1909, while famous opera composer Giacomo Puccini is totally engrossed with the writing of La fanciulla del West, a complex intrigue swirls around him, his step-daughter Fosca, the young maid Doria, Fosca’s mother Elvira, and Giulia, who works as a waitress in the “Chalet da Emilio” in front of Puccini’s villa in Torre del Lago. Romance, envy, jealousy and death are the protagonists of this intense silent drama, a labyrinth of ambiguities and secrets revealing the controversial demise of the composer’s youngest maid and a hidden love affair.

But the lively Pinocchio gets carried away by bad company quite easily and ends up running into endless misadventures while following his dream of becoming a real boy. In 1966 Cathy Berberian — called ‘Callas of the avant-garde’ by numerous contemporary composers — was in search of new vocal stimuli. With the support of Eco, her friend and admirer, she composed and performed a “Comics Opera” made of a series of comic-strip onomatopoeias. The painter Eugenio Carmi then joined in and illustrated the material. The Stripsody project was born. Eleonora Lima (TCD) and Francesca Placanica (University of Maynooth) will discuss how comics, music, and visual arts came together in this extraordinary collaboration centering the larger-than-life talent of Cathy Berberian.

Someone has stolen all the notes from the musical score composed by Mapà for the Great Concert of Ferragosto, and the three little adventurers Pipì, Pupù & Rosemary carry the delicate task of discovering the culprit behind this villainous theft and thus recover the music. They have no clues to go on, but they know one very important thing: notes have a life of their own, and they are attracted to music. They decide to put on three great classical works with the help of the forest animals, hoping this will bring all the notes back together and resolve the great mystery of their kidnapping.

Born in 1947, Paolo Rumiz is a journalist, writer and columnist. He covered several major conflicts, like the civil war in former Yugoslavia and the Nato attack on Afghanistan, and was awarded important prizes for journalism, including the Hemingway Prize for his reports from Bosnia in 1993, the Max David Prize for best Italian correspondent in 1994 and the San Vidal Prize in 2003. Alongside his activity as a war correspondent, he is also a passionate travel writer. His most recent book, Il filo infinito, explores Benedictine monasticism today, revealing it through places, voices, faces, silences, music and ventures, and giving content to the much misused formula of the “Christian roots” of Europe.

Religion still appears provides a framework for interpretating the world and a profound sense of belonging in Italy… even where there is no believing. Despite the rise of secularisation, religion has not gone away: it persists on Italian screens. This talk by Clodagh Brook will show and discuss some of the recent spectacular images of the Catholic church in Italy, exploring the reasons behind this persistence and examining how this might affect the emergence of a cinematic voice on the part of Italy’s minority religions, especially Islam.

After Charles II regained the throne in 1660, Italian artists, musicians, even Catholic priests, descended on London, while its paintings, fabrics and foods were again imported. There was stiff competition with other European nations and native interests. Amongst the eye-witnesses to this tussle were diarists Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn who bring it all vividly to life. Adrian Le Harivel, Curator of British Art at the National Gallery of Ireland, explores this lost world, evoking its atmosphere with some recorded music.

This event focuses on the collaboration between the people and institutions without which the conservation of such essential patrimony would be impossible. Alessandra Ferlito from the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro in Rome and Aoife Brady, Curator of Italian Art at the National Gallery of Ireland, will explore the collaborations that took place between Ireland and Italy since the 1960s and the fascinating results and discoveries we can now admire in the rooms of the National Gallery of Ireland.

30-year-old Guia works for a renowned international fashion magazine, drives a luxury Spider, travels on a private jet and lives between Milan and Paris. She thinks she has got everything going for her until she inherits a farm from her father and ends up in a remote town in Puglia, where she meets Renzo, a charming farmer who shows her that the one thing she is missing is love – true love. But just when happiness is within reach, she won’t be able to grasp it.

In 1998 a working site started near the San Rossore railway station (Pisa) to build a control centre for the railway line Roma-Genoa. During the excavation, a deposit with at least 30 shipwrecks was unearthed; it was associated with a watercourse, probably a tributary of an ancient river called Auser. The ships, some with cargo still on board, were embedded under eight centuries of silt, sand and clay, due to exceptional floods. The huge amount and variety of findings and the shipwrecks, in an excellent state of preservation, demonstrate the heavy commercial activities which characterised this area from the Late Republican Roman period to the Late Antiquity.

The Irish Baroque Orchestra welcomes regular guest and oboist extraordinaire Alfredo Bernardini. Alfredo will present a programme about madness in music based around the ‘La Follia’ variations of great Italian master and one-time Irish resident Francesco Geminiani. “Follia” (madness or frenzy) was originally the name of a 16th century Spanish dance based on a distinctive chord progression. During the 17th century this chord series became associated with a particular melody which grew to be extremely popular, and the material was snatched by hundreds of composers.

October 1493. Florence is still mourning the death of Lorenzo the Magnificent. Columbus’ ships have only recently reached the New World. Meanwhile, Milan is experiencing a renaissance under the leadership of Ludovico il Moro. In those years, people wandering the environs of Milan’s Castle often encounter a strange character: his name is Leonardo da Vinci. When a man is found dead in the Castle’s courtyard, il Moro turns to Da Vinci for help. 500 years after Leonardo’s death, Marco Malvaldi combines literature, science, history, and mystery to bring back to life one of the greatest figures of the Renaissance.

Despite being a brilliant marriage counselor, Jacopo is unable to sort out his own disastrous love life: because of a curse put upon him by his ex-girlfriend Simona, he is unbelievably unlucky and all the women who fell for him have always ended up in some unexplicable accident or misfortune. The Blackwater Valley Opera Festival is established as the leading summer classical music festival in Ireland. With a fantastic programme of 17 events over a packed seven days, it is no surprise that thousands of visitors travel to Lismore and West Waterford for the Festival every year. The 2020 Festival will feature an Italian opera double-bill at Lismore Castle, with Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. The Recitals strand of the Festival will bring music to the great houses, churches and historic venues of the region, including Chamber Music in original settings.

TERMS AND CONDITIONSTERMS AND CONDITIONSPlease note that due to organizational and administrative reasons the following terms and conditions apply:- Cancellations/Requests for refunds can only be accepted if made before the beginning of a course. The requests must be made in writing to the Director of the Institute and will be subject to a €50 administrative charge. Refunds will be made by bank transfer.- Fees cannot be transferred from one term to another or one person to another.- Please make sure that you will be able to attend the class you registered for on scheduled days/times.- Only one class change can be requested during each term and approval is subject to availability.- Enrolments after deadline (31st January) require prior approval of the Administrative Office and will be subject to a €50 administrative charge.- Teachers are assigned to each class depending on availability and at complete discretion of the Administrative Office.- Our courses are strictly reserved for people over 18 years of age.- The IIC reserves the right to cancel a course if the adequate number of students is not reached and to alter the timetable where necessary.

Italian Language Courses

THE COURSESTHE COURSESOur Italian language courses will help you develop speaking, reading and writing skills in a structured and gradual manner. Our teachers are Italian graduates with extensive experience and special qualifications in the teaching of Italian as a foreign language. All courses are structured according to the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Each course consists of 15 lessons / 30 hours; each class lasts 2 hours, including a 10 minute break. Classes will have a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 15 students.

TEXTBOOKSTEXTBOOKSOur courses employ the Contatto, Nuovo Contatto, Nuovo Espresso, Nuovo Magari and Nuovo Progetto Italiano series of textbooks. Students will be advised about the correct textbook upon enrolment. Books can be purchased at International Books, 18 South Frederick St, Dublin 2. Our students can avail of a 10% discount on all textbooks.

CONVERSATION CLASSESCONVERSATION CLASSESOur conversation courses, suitable for students with an intermediate or advanced knowledge of Italian, aim to improve your vocabulary and speaking skills. They build your confidence by providing opportunities to discuss, debate and exchange ideas through communicative activities and tasks.
