What is rSV?Respiratory syncytial virus, commonly known as RSV, is a virus that infects the lungs and breathing passages. RSV can be severe for infants under 6 months of age. It’s the most common cause of pneumo-nia in children under the age of 1 year in the US (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2010). Almost everyone gets RSV by the age of 2. Who is at risk?Children who are at high risk for a severe case of RSV are premature infants (those born early at less than 36 weeks), those under 2 years of age with a congenital heart condition or chronic lung disease, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Infants who are exposed to tobacco smoke and those whose mother smoked during pregnancy are also at risk. How is rSV spread?RSV is very contagious, spreading when-ever someone infected with RSV coughs or sneezes and the infected droplets come in contact with your mouth, nose or eyes. What are the symptoms of rSV?The symptoms of RSV are similar to the common cold. Those with RSV may have
a cough, runny nose, sneezing, fever and poor appetite. Infants may become irrita-ble, have decreased activity and breathing difficulties (CDC, 2010). How can you treat rSV?Because RSV is a virus and not a bacterial infection, antibiotics won’t work. Make certain that your child receives plenty of fluids. You can use a cool mist vaporizer to keep the air moist. Try to have your child blow their nose frequently to remove the mucus. For infants, you can use a bulb syringe. When should you call your doctor? You should call your doctor immediately if your child develops any of the following symptoms (March of Dimes, 2010):Difficulty breathing; Wheezing (makes a ‘whistling’ sound when breathing); Worsening cough; Thick yellow or green nasal drainage; Difficulty swallowing or sucking; Fever; or Looks blue around the mouth or fingertips. How can you prevent your child from getting rSV?There is no vaccine to prevent RSV. But you can help to prevent the spread of RSV. The RSV virus can live on surfaces for sev-
eral hours (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases [NIAID], 2008). Clean any surfaces that may be contami-nated with the RSV virus with soap and water or disinfectant. There are many sur-faces that we may not think about such as doorknobs, toys, phones, tables, pens and pencils:But what else can you do to protect your child?Keep your child away from people who have cold symptoms. Stay away from crowded areas, such as in shopping malls, grocery stores, etc. Always wash your hands with soap and water before touch-ing your child. If you can take action on even some of the above recommendations you are taking a positive step towards keeping your child healthy and free from RSV. Remember, to talk with your pediatrician about any con-cerns you may have and treatment options for RSV.

AT THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF NEVADA

If your child is in the hospital because they are sick or injured, you want them to get the right kind of care. Having a specially qualified team taking care of your little one can make a huge difference in their road to recovery.
At Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC, we understand that children are not simply little adults. Children are growing and developing and need extra monitor-ing, skill and compassion. That’s why Chil-dren’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC offers an unparalleled level of specialized services, not found anywhere else in Nevada.
One of our most well known services is our Pediatric Trauma Center; it’s Nevada’s only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. We treat children hurt in car crashes, biking accidents, and take care of any other injury a parent hopes will never happen to their little one. Through the Lions Burn Care Center, we can treat all types of burns, as we are home to the only Burn Care Center in the state. We also have the only Organ Transplant Center in the state.
Then, there are some of our best kept
secrets, such as Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC’s Pediatric Sedation Ser-vice. It’s the only one of its kind in the state, to have a designated unit. We provide safe sedation for children who have to undergo tests and procedures such as MRIs, CT scans, or biopsies. Children are able to have their testing done in a child-friendly envi-ronment, so their mind is occupied by toys and games, not focused on the testing and procedures. It makes for a more relaxing environment with more positive results.
The Emergency Department at Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC is staffed 24 hours a day, by fellowship-trained, Board Certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine doctors, who handle life-threatening emer-gencies at anytime of the day or night.
Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit pro-vides critical care to children with a vari-ety of problems ranging from trauma and infection, to drowning, stroke, and cancer. Our excellent outcomes are achievable through 24 hour in-house attending cover-age, and evidence-based treatment.
Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC hosts other specialties too, such as Pediat-ric Anesthesiology, Radiology, Oncology,
Pulmonology, and Endocrinology. Having such a comprehensive range of specialty services, Children’s Hospital of Nevada was recognized as the only hospital in Nevada to become an Associate member of NACHRI, (National Association of Children’s Hos-pitals and Related Institutions) Achieving this distinction, has put Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC on the national stage as one of a select group of only 216 children’s hospitals in the country.
Having professionals uniquely trained to care for your son or daughter makes a world of difference in how fast they are diagnosed and treated for a successful recovery. Best of all, the doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC treat parents as their partners, because you are the true expert at caring for your child.
Dr. Meena Vohra is a mother of two and Medical Director of Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC. More information can be found at childrenshospitalofnevada.org.

Setting New Year’s resolutions for yourself is a great idea. But make sure you include resolutions on parenting your child, because you are the biggest influence on your child and their future. Your child will emulate your behavior, so watch out for the following traits in yourself:
HOnESTy: Make sure you are as honest as you want your child to be. Don’t lie to your children or in front of them. Don’t excuse acts of dishonesty or deception by stating that this is an excep-tion. Don’t be a hypocrite. Avoid putting down negative behav-iors that you yourself do, such as speeding, drinking or smoking. Demonstrate your moral convictions by paying whatever price is necessary to do what is right, such as inconvenience, loss of money, approval and even employment.
rESPECT: Listen and respect your children’s views. Demon-strate self-restraint and maintain your own self-discipline with respect to violence, yelling or other displays of temper. Use only the language you want your children to use. Avoid petty behavior and power plays especially where your children are concerned. Mutual respect is an essential quality in any parent/child rela-tionship. This respect must be nurtured continuously to build and maintain a happy, healthy relationship.
rESPOnSIBILITy: Admit when you are wrong and take what-ever consequences are coming to you when you are wrong, and expect the same from your children. Don’t shift blame and excuse your own shortcomings or mistakes and expect the same from your children. Assign reasonable age-appropriate responsibilities to your kids and assign consequences if they fail to perform their duties. Make sure that your children keep their commitments at home, at school and in extracurricular activities. This means if you say you will do something you follow through, just as you expect your child to do.
FaIrnESS: General rules of fairness are necessary to keep peace in any household. Make sure you don’t resort to arbitrary power to get your way. Treat your children equally and fairly and be open to reasonable discussion and criticism.
CarInG: Children are stakeholders in everything you do, so demonstrate compassion and respect for others, especially for your children. Never discount, belittle or trivialize your children’s feelings or fears. Be visibly charitable and involve your children in charities to support. Getting your kids to give back to their community or to those less fortunate than themselves is something that will enrich their lives for years, start early and stay consistent.
The way you live your life will be remembered and copied by your children, so strive to be proud of your actions each and every day. If you do make a mistake use it as an opportunity to take respon-sibility, forgive yourself, acknowledge it as a mistake and use it as a teachable moment. Kids and adults alike should persevere through setbacks and strengthen the above principles to improve the rela-tionships with those we love!

To help Nevada families better prepare for the rising costs of a college education, the Nevada State Legislature established the Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program in 1997. The Program offers par-ents an alternative to exhausting family savings or depending solely on student loans when sending a student to college. Along with the other Nevada 529 College Savings Plans administered through the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office, this Program is designed to help parents, other family members, and friends maximize the opportunity of saving for college.
The Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program provides many benefits, the foremost being the ability to avoid the continually escalating costs of higher education by locking in today’s rates and avoiding future tuition increases. Several affordable plan options, includ-ing flexible payment plans starting as little as $36 per month, are available. Contract holders can select from five different tuition plans and can pay for their contract in a lump sum payment, over a five year period, or monthly until graduation. Earnings are tax-deferred until the contract beneficiary attends college, and are then tax-exempt as long as the funds are used for tuition costs. A Nevada Prepaid Tuition contract is not limited to Nevada schools; it can be used at any accredited public or private univer-sity, college, or vocational school in the United States. To add to its flexibility, contract holders can transfer the contract to another qualified beneficiary (up to a first cousin), keep the contract for up to six years, or cancel the contract and request a refund if the beneficiary decides not to go to college after graduation. A popu-lar component of the Program is a gift coupon option that can be used by other family members and friends to give a gift toward
a child’s Prepaid Tuition contract. The coupon, available on our website, can be used for birthdays, religious celebrations, gradua-tions, or any other special occasion.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to enroll their children in this valuable program now through February 28th, when the Open Enrollment Period concludes. Enrollments for newborns are accepted through June 30th. The earlier you begin your child’s savings account the lower the price, so visit NevadaTreasurer.gov or call 1-888-477-2667 today. You can also sign-up for payroll deduction through your employer and receive 50% off the enroll-ment fee!

Cultivating Creativity in your Childby Dr. Ray Huntington
While each of us was born with the innate ability to think and problem-solve, such curiosity must be nurtured. Without ample opportunities to master skills, tackle chal-lenges and figure things out, students lose motivation and creativity. In fact, researcher Dr. George Land’s infamous 1968 study revealed startling results about creative behavior. Dr. Land gave a creativity test to 1,600 five-year-olds, and 98 percent passed. At age 10, he retested the same group, and just 30 percent passed. When he tested them again at age 15, only 12 percent passed. Dr. Land also gave the same test to 280,000 adults and only 2 percent passed. Dr. Land’s conclu-sion: non-creative behavior is learned.
It’s true that once children begin school, they are taught to follow instructions, to conform to standards and be produc-tive students. They begin to think that there are only “right” answers to questions, rather than numerous possibilities. They become more likely to fear being wrong, and less likely to explore and give way to their imaginations.
However, creativity is an important, if undervalued, lifelong skill. Creative learning empowers students to think critically, make connections and be innovative—all imperative abilities in today’s world. Just look at some of the greatest scientific dis-coveries or other advances in civilization—all thanks to creative minds unafraid of taking risks.
How can parents cultivate their child’s creativity? Here are a few dos and don’ts to build your child’s creative potential:
DO respond to all of your child’s questions respectfully, no matter how unusual.
DO nOT constantly evaluate your child’s performance. Encourage him or her to think about things, to make mistakes without fear of retribution and to come up with multiple possible solutions to issues or problems.
DO encourage experimentation, questioning and exploration.
DO nOT teach your child only through rote learning or memoriza-tion without providing opportunities to practice learned concepts.
DO engage in creative, hands-on projects at home that promote independent learning or enhance school learning.
DO nOT brush off your child’s fantasies or imagination as silly or weird.
DO value all ideas offered by your child—whether he or she is coming up with alternatives to solving a problem or a list of rainy-day activities. Be sure to give him or her credit for such ideas.
DO encourage your child to seek answers to burning questions.
DO nOT pressure your child to be like a sibling or another student in his or her class, or regularly make comparisons.

Dining Out at McDonald’s
McDonald’s® Serves up Whole Grains, Fresh Fruit with new Fruit & Maple Oatmeal in Las Vegas
McDonald’s kicks off the new year with the national introduction of its new Fruit & Maple Oatmeal, a wholesome and balanced menu option available for Southern Nevada customers at breakfast and throughout the entire day. Delivering two of the three rec-ommended daily servings for whole grains and about a half cup of fruit, Fruit & Maple Oatmeal is McDonald’s first new breakfast offering since 2008.
Combining the perfect harmony of flavor, McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oatmeal is prepared with 100 percent natural whole grain oats, light cream and brown sugar, and topped with diced, fresh red and green apples, tangy dried cranberries and two types of raisins. As part of McDonald’s ongo-ing commitment to customer choice, every bowl of Fruit & Maple Oatmeal is freshly prepared upon request: customers may order it with brown sugar or without brown sugar for those who prefer a less sweetened option. Beyond breakfast, Fruit & Maple Oatmeal is served any time of the day in all of McDonald’s participating 14,000 restau-rant locations in the United States.
“With McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oat-meal, we’re offering a portable, affordable and balanced breakfast solution to help customers start their day right,” said Senior Director of Nutrition Cindy Goody, Ph.D., MBA, R.D.
“McDonald’s wants to help make it easier and more
inviting for our guests to eat more whole grains and fruits, and Fruit & Maple Oatmeal
is an effective way to help our customers integrate these important food groups into
their daily diets.”Fruit & Maple Oatmeal Delivers Fiber, Whole Grains and Fresh Fruit
Fruit & Maple Oatmeal has 290 calories per serving and is an excellent source of fiber and vitamin C. It provides 32 grams of 100 percent natural whole grain oats and about 25 percent of an individual’s daily recommendations for fruit – two food groups that consumers are encouraged to consume more often.1 Fruit & Maple Oat-meal without brown sugar has 260 calories per serving.
“New Fruit & Maple Oatmeal under-scores McDonald’s continued commitment and ability to meet Las Vegas customers’ needs for a variety of meal choices,” said James Vance, President of the local McDon-ald’s Owner/Operator’s Association. “With the option of visiting over 100 locations throughout the city, our customers will have the accessibility and opportunity to get Fruit & Maple any time of the day.”

Parents, don’t let your family be a part of the 90% that see their New Year’s resolu-tions fail. Make January a month of suc-cess by teaching your child the importance of setting and achieving goals. GOAL SETTING is an important LIFE SKILL that few people take the time to learn. The achievement of goals, and more impor-tantly, the realization that these achieve-ments can be self-obtained, is the founda-tion for a lifetime of success. Dreams and goals are two different things. Dream big, be passionate about your dreams, and then learn how to set goals for making them come true. Here are a few tips to teaching your child about GOALS.
Kidz Matter Truth #1 - The earlier some-one begins to achieve success, the easier it is to continue that pattern of success.
Kidz Matter teaches a simple 4-step pro-cess: Set a Goal, Make a Plan, Take Action, Enjoy the Rewards. Today we will discuss Step 1 – Set a Goal.
Make the Goal Important to your Child – If they don’t take ownership of it, or if they are not excited about it, it will be a challenge to have success. However, for the purpose of developing this skill, we suggest that you “coach” or “guide” your child into selecting a goal that you know will be worthwhile, and somewhat easy to achieve. Ask a few questions about what they would like to achieve or improve on. They must be able to be excited about the
goal, and realize the value to them. This is less true for toddlers, and certainly more critical for teens. Set a time frame 3-4 weeks.
Once you have SET A GOAL, break it down into 2-3 smaller SHORT-TERM GOALS. The purpose of short-term goals is to make it easier to notice progress, which helps motivation to continue to reach the main goal.
Make the Goal Realistic & Achievable - Remember, the purpose is to teach your child how to set and achieve goals. You want to do everything you can to “guaran-tee” success so they experience the satis-faction of reaching their goal. You can do this by making the initial goal somewhat easy to reach. Example: If your child is not motivated to do chores or help around the house, setting a goal to do a dozen daily chores over a 3-week period is probably not realistic. Therefore, set a more realistic goal of tackling one chore on a daily basis. Once they have achieved their first goal, you can then add more ambitious goals. When setting realistic and achievable goals, keep these things in mind: Child’s age, Interests, Strengths & Weaknesses, Amount of time you have to assist with their Action Plan.
It is always best to lead by example, so set and share your own goals with your child. Get started today. Reinforce all of efforts with positive encouragement, and enjoy success together.

Smiley Snowman By Christina M. ButlerAges Preschool This charming picture book tells of the adventures of some woodland animals as they build a snowman. The subtly reassuring tone is enhanced by the soft, dreamy illustrations. Young children will also enjoy the sparkles that give the snowman a luminous quality. Smiley Snowman is fun winter story perfect to read before bed.

Twelve year old Zoomy’s comfortable life with his grandparents is disturbed when his no-good, absentee father returns to town and delivers a mysterious box at his home. 8 reasons why raising twins is easier than raising two kids of different agesby beagooddad
People often seem amazed at the challenges of raising twins. Even parents with more kids then me mention it. How bizarre to think that people could imagine that raising four kids is more dif-ficult in any way shape or form than raising twins. Ludicrous.
I will even go on record as saying that raising twins has to be easier than raising a mere two kids that are different ages. Don’t believe me. Well, read on.
Babies start off eating very small por-tions. Much smaller than one little
baby food jar. Instead of throwing the leftovers away or trying to store them, parents of twins make them share a jar. Once they are big enough to eat more than a jar, it is easy to open 3 jars, feed both kids from each jar, and get a well rounded diet at every meal.
With kids, bath and bedtime seems to take up most of their waking
moments. With twins, they can easily share a tub which, let’s face it, helps save the planet by conserving water and saves time. They also can share a bedtime. Our kids sleep in the same room. We waddle in there and start the routine of shoving both feet into one leg hole while putting on pants and getting their arms stuck above their heads while putting on their shirts. Then, and here is the real magic. We have one story time. All the quality time you can imagine with half the ticks on the clock. There is no putting some-body to bed at 7 and then somebody else at 8. Everybody is on the same schedule.
Since they are the same age, you do not have to worry about somebody’s favorite
Legos being the choking hazard of Junior. You just need one big pile of age appropriate toys. How much easier could it get?
Remember toilet locks. They made you feel good while your first child
was wandering around the bathroom in her diaper. Then Junior came. But, Senior needed to start peeing in the big potty. Do you take off the toilet lock and risk drawing Junior or personally escort Senior to the bathroom every time? Worry no more if you have twins. If one is safe for the toilet lock, the other is, too. After all they are only 16 minutes apart.
Tired of fighting over whether to watch Baby Einstein or Sponge-
bob Squarepants. I feel bad for you. You should have had twins. They may have their favorites, but twins at least like the same developmental stage of videos. And never again worry about trying to find a movie at the theater that will be appropriate for all of the children.

2. One bath/bedtime.

Some stores feel sorry for us parents of multiples. To help ease our “burden,” they
offer us DISCOUNTS. That’s right. When we bought our cribs at Burlington Coat Factory we paid 20% less on the second crib. They call it the Twin Discount. Suckers.
Remember when the terrible twos ended. You finally got Senior to quit freaking out
every time you left Toys R Us without a teddy bear. Be careful. Don’t let down your guard. Junior is about to enter that phase. The tantrums for twins are not any worse then singletons. It is very rare that both throw a tantrum at the same time. But, we only have to spend a brief period of time in each phase. Then it is done.
Tired of scheduling playtime for Junior on Wednesday afternoon and
something for Senior on Wednesday morning. Sick of sucking up to boring parents just so all your kids have somebody to play with. We only need one play date. One single kid can occupy our kids for the morning. Less gas money. Less dirty neighbor couches. Sweet it is.
I probably should not be disclosing all of this to you parents of singletons, but it is going to come out sooner or later. For real convenience, it does not get much better than twins.

all about TwinsIdentical twins occur when one egg is fertilized by one sperm
and then divides producing two embryos. Identical twins are vir-tually genetically identical and are always the same sex. They are not necessarily “mirror image” identical, but usually look very similar physically. Their fingerprints, for example, are not identi-cal. The frequency of identical twins is about 4 per 1000 births. Scientists are still unsure as to exactly why an egg splits.
Fraternal twins are the result of two eggs being fertilized by two sperm. Fraternal twins may be boy-boy, girl-girl, or boy-girl. There is no set pattern to how they will look when compared to each other. Think of them as siblings who happened to be born at the same time. Traditionally, fraternal twinning is hereditary from mother to daughter and frequently skips generations. However, with the increasing use of fertility treatments fraternal twins and higher order multiples are now being born at five times the rate of fraternal twins in the 1970’s, about 22 per 1000 births. It is possible that fraternal twins can be conceived up to two weeks apart
Twins occur naturally in 1 out of 80 births; triplets in 1 out of 8000; quadruplets in 1 out of 700,000; and quintuplets in 1 out of 65,610,000. The average gestation for a twin pregnancy is 36 weeks and in less than half of those pregnancies both babies are born head first. One third of twin pregnancies are identical, one third fraternal same sex, and one third boy-girl

Toddler Time at Sky Zone helps toddlers moms socialize
Play dates and groups are an integral part of child development; They enable children a chance to learn, socialize and get along with other children their age. Whether at a park, playground or at home, these types of social interactions help chil-dren learn to share and promote indepen-dence, while giving parents and children quality play time together. Basic sports classes, like the Toddler Time offered at Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park, teaches kids about teamwork and cooperation, supports coordination and encourages a healthy, active lifestyle.
Toddler Time, a special 2-hour session offered exclusively to parents and children up to age six, is a fun and unique class that allows kids to jump, roll, crawl, bounce and most importantly, have fun on giant tram-polines! The wall-to-wall trampoline court is reserved exclusively for little ones and their parents every Wednesday morning, allowing parents and children to socialize and participate in stimulation playtime. Louds of laughter, chatting and playing are just a few things parents and kids can look forward to as their kids “jump” for joy and make new friends.
“Toddler Time gives families the oppor-tunity to participate in wholesome activi-ties that encourage health, interactivity, and have fun!” says Jeff Platt, CEO of Sky Zone. “The early years are an important time for children to develop key motor skills and communication methods. Tod-
dler Time is a safe way to promote healthy choices as well as a fun alternative place for play time.”
So whether you’re looking for the next destination for your mommy & me group or want an exciting one-on-one activity, Toddler Time is the perfect place for family time and memories to be created. Toddler Time is $6 per hour for each child, with complimentary jumps for parents, from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. every Wednesday.
Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park is a 20,000 sq. ft. wall to wall trampoline park, with 10,000 sq. ft. of trampoline courts. Sky Zone is located at 4915 Steptoe St. Suite 400. For more information, please visit www.skyzonesports.com.

Lied Discovery Children’s Museum to open 2011 with featured exhibition Spin: The Science of rotation
Spin: The Science of Rotation will be on display in the Cultural Gallery at Lied Discovery Children’s Museum January 15 through May 15, 2011. Developed by the Catawba Science Center in Hick-ory, North Carolina, and sponsored locally by National Security Technologies, Spin allows museum visitors to explore the fun of science through 15 different hands-on exhibit areas. The popular “Human Centrifuge” exhibit invites you to step inside a spinning tub and investigate how your effort impacts inertia. “You’re Spin-ning” presents words and images on a large wheel to reveal how the speed of a spinning object varies with distance from its axis. Among the other exhibit areas are the “Laser Show,” “Build A Top,” and “Let It Roll.”
Lied Discovery Children’s Museum members will get a sneak peek at the Spin exhibition at an exclusive event on January 14. The museum also offers free field trips for one elementary grade level during the run of each featured exhibition. Local first grade stu-
dent field trips in reserved school groups will receive free admis-sion to the museum from January 14 through May 15, 2011. For more information about field trips, visit LDCM.org/education.
Lied Discovery Children’s Museum is located at 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North in downtown Las Vegas and features more than 100 interactive exhibits based on science, art and culture for children and families. For more information, visit LDCM.org or call (702) 382-3445.
