An amazing performance byFanny Lumsden and her bandthe aptly named ‘Thrillseekers’,was witnessed by over 130 fansat Ben Lomond Hall on Friday19th January. Patrons were‘thrilled’ not just by Fanny thesinger, songwriter, they weresoaked in the atmosphere of atrue entertainer.

Local act, Barb and JimO’Neill were on stage and in thespot light. They were a superbact to start the night of brilliantentertainment. Melody Mokofollowed with an impressivesupport act.

Fanny Lumsden and theThrillseekers Band carried offthe rest of the night. True to thecountry music genre, storieswere told in appropriate style, from the more raucous throughto the subtle melancholy mood. The closing moments demandedfloor space as local kids joinedFanny on the stage and patronsrose to their feet to feel the beatup close.

Fanny Lumsden, the bandand her crew come into townbased on their philosophy “Thewhole idea behind this tour is tobring live music to our wonder-ful small communities, to keepthe halls in action and supportthe future of small communi-ties”.

It was indeed a pleasure anda privilege to be able to presentthis opportunity to participate inan entertainment feature of thisstandard for our community. Wethank them and wish them wellin the Awards at the TamworthCountry Music Festival.

While Beth White and SarahHarding apologise for misunder-

standing and advertising doorticket sales at the same price asonline tickets, they also want tosincerely thank the big team ofhelpers who committed theirtime and energy to enable theevent to run smoothly.

A special thankyou to GuyraLions for the fantastic barbecuefood sold from their tent and toCheryle Newberry for the milk-shakes and ice cream dessertrange sold from her van alongwith the tea and coffee. KirksIGA and the teams who man-aged the bar facility are alsothanked for their commitmentto the event.

At the end of the night every-one had the opportunity to meetand greet the performers and‘happy snaps’ were in order as

patrons took their leave.A different level of activity

will again bring the BenLomond War Memorial Hall tolife with an Australia Daybreakfast on Friday at 7:00amsharp.

During the afternoon of Aus-tralia Day the historic militaryvehicles customarily take adrive from Guyra to a venue inthe local area. This year thatdrive will include Ben Lomondand the Hall committee willprovide a light afternoon teafor a donation.

There are two main ingre-dients at Guyra’s Lamb andPotato Festival. WhileBertha Reeves is well knownfor her potato bakes, theother equally important in-gredient is the lamb.

The responsibility for carv-ing this up stands squarelyon the shoulders of Bertha’shusband Geoff. He is thechief slicer and carves hisway through around twentyseasoned roast lambs eachday of the festival, and thisyear has already carved upmore than 100 legs of lamb.

You will find Geoff on deckevery day of the festival fromaround 6.45am until around8.30 each night. As well ascarving up the lamb hemakes a mean coleslaw andis responsible for keeping thegas cookers going.

He is also ready to pass onhis advice and have a jokewith the army of volunteerswho keep the festival going.

“Every year it gets biggerand runs for longer and weuse more lamb and more po-tatoes,” Geoff said. “And coke- they must bath in it we gothrough so much.”

Geoff and Bertha havebeen there almost since thefestival began 32 years ago.Gazebo manager Julie Git-toes refers to them as her leftand right hand - withoutthem the festival simplywouldn’t happen.

“People like Geoff and

Bertha are the heart andsoul of the festival and to-gether we carry on the workstarted by Frank Presnelland all those wonderful peo-ple all those years ago,” Juliesaid.

“We started in a caravanand then moved into thegazebo and there have beena few extensions and we arestill here.”

One volunteer who doesn’tmiss the caravan is DorothyEvery from Ben Lomond. She has volunteered every

year, firstly with the BenLomond CWA and now withthe Hall Committee..

“It is much easier now wedon’t have to go up and downthe steps of the caravan andeverything is the rightheight,” she said.

“I used to bring bricks fromhome to build the table up tothe right height and noweverything is here and itworks much better.”

This year the festival hasbeen blessed by fine weatherand Saturday was one of the

biggest days ever. They sold out of lamb

chops in two hours on theSaturday morning, so theyhad to use Sunday’s supply ofchops as well.

“They were really popularwith workers from thetomato farm,” Julie said.

“We also sold lots of eggand bacon rolls and break-fasts. But the seasoned lambdinners are still the mostpopular - that’s what mostpeople want.”

January 17th - There was ayarding of 1650 lambs and1450 sheep at the Guyra sale-yards.

A correction in the marketcombined with a reasonablygood season saw well finishedlambs in short supply as pro-ducers opt to improve the fin-ish of their good lambs.

Conversely those experienc-ing drier conditions pushedstore lambs onto the market inlarger numbers. The usual buy-ers were in attendance.

Market trends for the fewwell finished lambs werecheaper with limited opportu-nities for trade buyers to pur-chase.

The better quality storelambs attracted keen restockerinterest, selling firm to slightly

dearer with a shorter turn-around anticipated. Theplainest of the store lambssold to a cheaper trend with alonger time needed to finish.

There was a good supply ofwell finished medium andheavy weight sheep penned.Market trends were firm tocheaper, however Merinosheep skin values did improvesome average prices.

It was somewhat of a mixedbag this week for the Australianwool market with Superfinetypes connuing to strengthenwhilst the fine and medium mi-cron Merino types allowed a lit-tle gravity to take hold.

It was a three day sale in theNorthern region and aer a firmfirst day of sales prices fell awayon the second day only to con-solidate and recover slightly onthe final day. 50,499 bales weresold naonally for the week andconsidering the level of themarket the passed in rate of7.1% appears high.

Major buyers included Tech-wool, Seatech and PJ Morris.Beer style and strength typescarrying low vegetable maerwere reported as selling at lev-

els close to last week’s sale withmost of the downward pressurebeing applied to wool carryingimperfecons, with buyersbeing able to be more selecvewith their purchases due to thelarge naonal offering.

With the Aussie dollarstrengthening further againstthe US the Eastern Market Indi-cator actually finished a fewcents dearer when looked at inUS dollars. Naonal weekly ros-tered quanes are set to dropconsiderably with 43,000 balesdue next week before falling toan expected 40,000 the follow-ing week.

Mr David Good’s letter ofthe 10th January is mislead-ing. He claims a rail trail isvulnerable to a sell off.

In the Legislative Council Ihad carriage of the TransportAdministration Amendment(Closure of Railway Line Be-tween Rosewood and Tum-barumba) Bill on behalf ofthe Minister for Transport. The Bill clearly says “The au-

thorisation of the rail infra-structure owner under sub-clause(1) in relation to thedisposal of the land con-cerned is limited to the landbeing dedicated under Crownlands legislation as a railtrail for recreational use.”

Future legislation for otherproposed rail trails would beexpected to follow this tem-plate. The NSW Parliamentoverwhelming voted thatway.

The Management andStaff of The Hub at Guyrawish to acknowledge the ex-traordinary generosity of theGuyra community who do-nated so many wonderfulitems to our Reverse AdventChristmas Giving Appeal. Somany of the items were ableto be given to communitymembers for them to use asChristmas gifts for their fam-ilies. It was heartbreakingfor us to see so many men, es-pecially, who had nothing togive to their kids for Christ-mas. We were so pleased tobe able to support them byallowing them a choice ofwhatever they wished tohave. We also supplied manygreat gifts to Guyra Familysupport Services for distribu-tion to their families in town.Thankfully there were anumber of donations of food, toiletries and other itemswhich we were able to dis-tribute to adult members ofour community, as well asfamilies. We believe thataround 100 people benefitedfrom the kindness of you, ourdonors.

As you can imagine not ev-erything was utilised then, and even though we havekept some things in reservewe were left with quite a few

great items. Then we heardthat the much-loved annualCar Rally ‘Show and Shine’has so many entries that itwill extend along BradleyStreet all the way to More-dun Street, Since that end oftown is part of our patch TheHub at Guyra and GuyraCommunity Garden decidedthat we would hold one of ourfantastic Trash ‘N’ TreasureSales. The donations areflooding in and we will besorting everything next weekand selling from early Satur-day 27th January. We willalso have available food and

drinks.We welcome donations and

helpers. We will be opentoday, Wednesday, andThursday from 10am until2pm. You can drop off via theside door. Just ring the doorbell and we will accept yourpre-loved items.

Watch out for the results ofthis much-anticipated activ-ity; and also the CommunityGarden’s upcoming TwilightSummer Gathering - morenews on that soon.

The first evening of theLamb and Potato Festival isalways a time for the ‘family’to get back together. For twoweeks each January the com-mittee and the stall holderswork together to bring thisunique event to fruition.

President Steve Mephamwelcomed many familiarfaces, and a few new ones, atthe traditional stall holdersdinner on January 17th.

“As Frank always said it isthe stalls that make the fes-tival – it’s the stalls they cometo see,” he said.

“It is great to have so manypeople here from last yearwho endured the ‘storm of allstorms’, we are glad it didn’tdampen your spirits toomuch.”

“Last year taught us onething – that small communi-ties have a can do attitude. We saw it after the storm andwe also saw it with the estab-lishment of a new locally pro-duced newspaper.”

“They helped us prepare ourLamb and Potato programand it the best so far,” he said.“It’s fresh, it’s inviting, a littlebit comical, and best of all itwas produced right here inthe main street of Guyra bythe team at GALA.”
