Musing Along the Highway Highway ~ Pastor Wesolik

Comfort and Joy Are More Than a Brand of Tea!

This is not a commercial. I do not wish to offend any tea lovers in our fellowship, but I don’t

particularly enjoy tea. I’ve been a fan of strong coffee for years. There is one exception. The

exception is the tea named “Comfort and Joy.”

Obviously, the product name is a spin- off on a Christmas theme. I imagine that the person

responsible for the product had a moment of inspiration that called to mind the familiar words of

the chorus of the old English Christmas carol, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” Perhaps they

thought, “Comfort and Joy. Great name,” started the process of production and simply went on to the next

chore thinking of cinnamon, spices and tea. They imagined that on a cold winter day a few, or perhaps more

than a few, might pick up the canister of tea moved by an impulse surrounding their holiday memories

alone.

The Christmas carol they brought to mind has deeper thoughts at its roots. The unknown author was

obviously thinking of the lasting comfort and joy radiating as a nugget of hope at the core of all the holiday

traditions and confusion. If we but consider the words of the Christmas carol that becomes evident. Citing

the reality of our Savior’s birth, the chorus affirms, “Oh tidings of comfort and joy. Comfort and joy. Oh

tidings of comfort and joy.” The Savior’s birth is the genesis of our comfort and joy.

The original version of that familiar carol carries some interesting twists of meaning that more directly reflect

the Gospel of Jesus and its application to humanity’s spiritual state. When the Carol was composed in the

mid1750s it was one of many that were a direct reaction to 15th century church music. It was a

“contemporary song!!??” God Rest Ye…..” was first published around 1760 in a document entitled, "Three

New Christmas Carols." That work was printed and sold at the printing-office on Bow Church-Yard, London.

The verse and chorus when published were:

“God rest you merry, Gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay,

For Jesus Christ our Savior Was born upon this Day.

To save poor souls from Satan's power, Which long time had gone astray.

Which brings tidings of comfort and joy. Comfort and joy.

Oh tidings of comfort and joy.”

The truth of the Gospel is that Jesus Christ was born on what we celebrate as, “Christmas Day” for the

singular purpose of rescuing all of us from the power of Satan. That reality brings tidings, i.e. news of,

comfort to those who are lost. Joy is the consequence.

I realize that when I mentioning both Jesus and Satan in my writing to you that many may not even accept

that basic cosmic dualism. A recent Barna survey revealed, 60% of proclaimed Christians reject the thought

that Satan is a living spiritual being. Perhaps the, “old evil foe,” that Luther mentioned has had his way with

most Christians by convincing them he does not exist? Too many have chosen to adopt a cosmology that

embraces a God of grace and forgiveness while rejecting the thought that there is a living driving force for

evil. The deepest thoughts associated with Christmas time, given this perspective, are that God loves us and

came to be with us. Isn’t He nice!

In truth, Christmas celebrates the birth of the Child of Promise and the beginning of His mission. The promise

spoken by the Lord to the first parents is fulfilled in Christ. He was to crush the head of Satan. His victory,

which we celebrate on Easter morning, is the ultimate comfort and joy. Through faith we are comforted with

the words, “your sins are forgiven.” We live with the joy of knowing that even now we are children of God

headed to eternity and that that joy lasts into the, “bleak mid-winter” of our futures.

At Christmas we celebrate the birth of our Saviour who by his sacrificial death assures us of lasting comfort

and eternal joy. This is not just a passing holiday flavour.

Have a comforting and joy filled Christmas

Pastor Wesolik

ADVENTure Bags ADVENTure bags will be available on Dec. 7th, 2013.

These bags are intended to give students 24 family de-

votions for the month of December. If you would like

an ADVENTure bag please contact Heidi Koehler at

816-519-0752.

Club 58 (5th –8th graders) The students were asked to write what they were grateful for every day for an entire week and

how they would show their gratitude to God for His blessings. Here are a few of our youths

responses below:

“I am thankful for food on my table and I will show this by not wasting.”

“My mentor Rachel, write her a note and tell her that she means

the world to me.”

“I am thankful for my teachers, I will go up to them and say thank

you for teaching me everything and doing what you do.”

“I am thankful for home. I will pick up my room

without being asked.”

These are just some of the wonderful things our kids are thankful for.

Our 2nd annual No Sale Field Day Fundraiser was another success! We could not have done it without your support! The family and corporate sponsors exceeded our expectations. The kids LOVE their shirts. A formal thank you

letter is on the way to you if you donated to this event. The children all participated in a variety of activities over a three day period. Many families

participated in the actual field day event as well as sponsoring their students. Below are a few photos to share with you from the week.

Our 16th Annual Cookie Sale will be held on Sunday, December 15th after

each service!

Thank you for your continued support!

Christmas Concert

Directed by Dr. J. D. Goddard

Sunday, December 1st

, 3:00 pm

The concert will feature music by the American composer Joseph Gentry-Stevens.

Strings and organ will accompany the volunteer choir performing Christmas music built

around the theme: “Exultate Deo.” The program concludes with Christmas carols sung

by the entire audience and choir. Please note that the concert starts at 3 pm.

Just a word about the Collegiate Chorale Concert held on Sunday, November 17th: A

large audience enjoyed a Lutheran Cantata performed by the Chorale, written by J. S.

Bach, entitled “My God, I Long For You.” It was magnificent, using our own organ

and a small string orchestra. It was the first time a Lutheran Cantata by Bach has ever

been performed in our sanctuary. Interesting, too, was the fact that the conductor, Dr.

Timothy Cloeter is Lutheran; he grew up with our own church traditions and music.

There will be a special offering collected for typhoon Haiyan relief on

December 1st after each of the three services.

The church office has received inquiries about gathering a special offering to help provide relief for the

victims of typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines on November the 8th. We have all heard of the

thousands of people whose lives have been lost and the many thousands of others that have been dis-

placed. In response to this tragedy, we will be gathering a special offering after all our services on the 1st

of December. If you are moved to support this effort please bring you check or a cash donation to

church on that date. You may make the check out to the church but add a notation indicating you desig-

nee as Lutheran World Relief or LCMS Disaster Relief. Non designated funds will go to our Synod’s

launched Mindy’s musical career. By fifteen Mindy had already

sung lead vocals on two children's albums, with songs airing on

local and national radio stations; she also appeared as a guest

soloist on a Gospel album.

Thriven News

Double Direction Church Program

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans recently completed its program of matching Thrivent Choice dollars di-

rected by members to congregations. Member directions resulted in Thrivent reaching the $15 million

cap for the program.

FLC’s Thrivent Choice Account will receive its matching funds by direct deposit on December 20. That

account is used for grants for ministries of FLCS and its partner organizations.

If a ministry of interest to you is launching a new initiative and is looking for support, contact Jim

Kroeger, FLC Thrivent Congregational Advocate, for information on grants. Jim can be reached at civi-

[email protected] or 330-864-8389.

Christmas is right around the corner. That must mean it’s once again time for the Salvation Army’s Red

Kettle Campaign. They are in desperate need of volunteers to man the kettles. FLCS has once again vol-

unteered to assist them in their endeavor. We have only one day this year, and our location will be at

ACME #15 in Montrose. This is an indoor location, so you can stay nice and warm and dry. Each shift is

one hour long, but feel free to sign up for longer if you’d like. Hurry and sign up on the sheets posted on

the Mission Tower before all the good times are taken! This is a fantastic way to get in the Christmas

Spirit, and also do something good for those less fortunate. Contact Linda Evans at (330) 864-4238 if

you have any questions.

Jesus Party); APS (Giving Tree); and

St. Luke Residents’ Christmas Party.

Thank you, Thrivent, for providing

this additional loving help to our

Jesus commanded us to:

“Love the lord your God

with all your heart...

soul… mind,” and …“Love

your neighbor as yourself.” Mat-

thew 22:37-39

Jesus also said, “I tell you the truth,

anything you did for even the least

of my people here, you also did for

me.” Matthew 25:40.

As we approach the Advent Season

on Sunday, Dec. 1, and the birth of

Jesus, our Lord and Savior, our

congregation, school, and friends

are “loving our neighbors” by help-

ing the Christian missions we sup-

port.

Starting with the OPEN

M’s Thanksgiving Eve

dinner for 300-350 peo-

ple who are poor and

hungry, we committed to

donating 24-30 pies (homemade

or bought; any flavor). Dead-

line for bringing pies to the

FLCS kitchen is Tues., Noon on

Nov. 26. Please sign up today

on the Mission Tower. Becky

Leu and Jean Wurzbacher will de-

liver pies to OPEN M by 4pm Tues.

Thank you everyone!

In addition to our

regular on-going food

collection for Haven

of Rest (Nov.) and OPEN M

(Dec.), we are committed to

donate 200 boxes of Rice-A-

Roni for Christmas baskets for

families helped by OPEN M,

deadline Sunday, Dec. 1.

Also, $350.00 was budgeted and

sent for 7 children’s gifts, under

OPEN M’s “Christmas for the Love

of Children” project.

and program for many area

children on Sat., Dec. 7. The party

includes a puppet program, gifts,

and the story of Jesus’ birth. Thank

you for your many gift donations!

If you have not turned in your re-

ceipts (or a copy), please give them

to Tim Koehler or Grace Goettler

this week. Thrivent will provide a

matching monetary donation to

Haven of Rest’s Children’s Ministry.

Our FLCS youth, under

Heidi Koehler’s guidance,

will decorate our annual

“Giving Tree” for Akron

Pregnancy Services and will un-

veil it on Sunday, Dec. 1. The

tree is filled with 75 gift tags for

people to take, purchase the item

listed and gift wrap. Be sure to in-

clude the tag so that it is ready to

give to the families that Christian-

based APS counsels and helps. Our

youth also plan to deliver the gifts

by Tues., Dec. 17 to APS. Please

remember to put your gift re-

ceipts, or a copy, in a holder by

the tree, or give to Jacquie Kyle,

so we can receive Thrivent match-

ing funds.

New this year! Miss Karla, and the
