Notes From Pastor Chris
While going on the excellent FPC ministry scavenger hunt on Sunday, listening to voices younger and older reading descriptions of the ways this congregation is responding to God’s grace, I was overcome with two feelings: deep gratitude and excited anticipation.
I am grateful for too many things to name in this limited space. I think they can all be summed up by saying I am grateful for your faithfulness as the people of God. It is God’s grace that summons us, and your faithful response to that grace, empowered by the Spirit, that makes this a vibrant community of faith. A quick look at the newsletter or at our website reveals an abundance of ministries for all ages, in every stage of life, rooted in Christ and growing in grace. I remain profoundly grateful for your generosity of spirit and resources, which enables us to continue to thrive.
I am excited about the present and future of this community of faith. It is no secret that this decade has seen a decline in mainline churches, and increasingly in evangelical ones as well. This decline has many causes, including the church’s grappling with various contemporary issues, the rise (especially among millennials) of the “nones,” those who respond to surveys of religious affiliation with “none of the above,” and the overall decline in institutional loyalty and social institutions generally. There are no doubt many other causes, but these remain the most prominent.
However, despite these trends, which have impacted our congregation as well, FPC remains uniquely positioned to step into God’s future for us with faithfulness and confidence. We are completely debt-free, with a renovated facility, a substantive mission budget and mission engagement locally and globally, a faithful and talented staff living out their callings here with excellence, a renewed commitment to outreach in our community, and a voice in Williamson County for God’s abundant grace for all.
The present and future of our congregation and of the PC(USA) in general is not without its challenges. However, we have all we need from God to meet those challenges and live out our mission – “responding to God’s grace through worship, study, and service” – in this growing community.
I pray you also feel gratitude and excitement, and will join me as we step into God’s future with joy.
Peace, Pastor Chris

The Greatest of These is Love at Montreat
For the weekend of August 10, thirteen FPC women ventured out of Franklin for what has become an annual tradition and pilgrimage: the Montreat Women’s Conference. Our group this year was a wonderful mix of ages and personalities that included four moms, six grandmothers, one great-grandmother (although she looks so young it almost doesn’t count) and one twenty-something on the cusp of moving to Maryland and starting a new life adventure.
We arrived in groups as schedules permitted and converged in the larger of our two shared houses for our Friday evening meal:. Everyone brought something to share and we had a wonderful buffet at our long dining room table. Some headed down to the evening worship at Anderson Auditorium and others relaxed on the porches and took in the sounds and smells of the serene Montreat nightfall.
Saturday morning began with a sunrise hike to the top of Lookout Mountain for Kim, Jane, Chandler, Lauren, Sarah, and Jennifer. Lookout Mountain is a rite of passage at Montreat, and this climb was the first for Jane, Sarah and Jennifer. Sarah’s device calculated 41 flights of stairs, and it was worth every step!
Our keynote speaker Saturday morning was Valarie Kaur. Valarie is an activist and the leader of the Revolutionary Love project, a group that seeks to mobilize communities and advance the ethic of love. Valarie practices the Sikh faith, which we learned does not proclaim a supreme or specific God, but rather seeks the oneness, the unity in all things. Valarie emphasized the importance of wonder, of looking at the world and one another with wonder: to wonder about another person, to wonder what their life is like, what burdens they carry. In
the Sikh faith, and for Valarie, it is the wonder that opens the door to compassion, empathy, and forgiveness. You can hear Valarie’s message in her Ted Talks, or visit RevolutionaryLove.net to learn more about their mission.
On Saturday afternoon, we each pursued our favorite Montreat activities: participating in conference workshops, shopping in the Montreat store, hiking, napping, or reading in the front porch swing. The beautiful Montreat rain came and went as it does through the afternoon, and we enjoyed dinner Saturday night on the patio of My Father’s Pizza, a local favorite.
On Sunday morning, we were treated to an ‘experience’ with Nashville’s own Amy Grant. Amy told stories and sang songs and led all of us through a practice to ‘quiet the chatter’: the internal chatter, the never-ending mental to-do list, the barrage of media and devices. Our own Elizabeth Stivers found herself on the Anderson stage alongside Amy and ten or so other women as we separated how we live (consumed by the chatter) from who we are. And who are we? ‘Loved’, says Amy Grant. We are loved.
In Montreat, it is easy to believe you are loved. The safety and security and quiet beauty of the place envelops you. And every year when we exit the Montreat gates with all manner of reality before us, we know that we have been renewed, we know that we are loved, and we know that we will go again and find the same spirit of place waiting for us.
Montreat Women’s Conference 2019 Attendees: Martha Johnson, Cindy Blackburn, Barbara Roos, Jane Herron, Elizabeth Stivers, Lauren Inglis Dianne Green, Janice Eddlemon, Kim Joiner, Sharon Quintana, Sarah Fox and not pictured Chandler Joiner

In our time together, we will look at some major theological themes that have been important for Presbyterians. He has served as a pastor, seminary theology professor, and academic dean, as well as an editor for Westminster John Knox Press. Among his books are: Coffee with Calvin: Daily Devotions; Moments with Martin Luther: 95 Daily Devotions; Mornings with Bonhoeffer: 100 Reflections on the Christian Life; Presbyterian Questions, Presbyterian Answers; and Presbyterian Beliefs: A Brief Introduction. before? Please encourage them to make an appointment with you. Or, if you’re not eligible to donate, please con-
sider asking a friend to donate at this drive or volunteer to work at this drive!
All those who come out to give blood at this drive in September will receive a coupon via email for a free haircut,

On Sunday, August 25, the Session welcomed Brian, Hattie, Ben, Charlie, and Harriet Kissel into membership.
We are delighted to have them as part of our faith community and to be part of their faith journey. Please
find an opportunity to introduce yourself and welcome them.
Brian, Hattie, Ben, Charlie, and Harriet Kissel moved to
Franklin this summer from Davidson, North Carolina when
Brian joined the faculty of Vanderbilt Peabody College. They
were very involved in their church in Davidson and
immediately volunteered and participated in Vacation Bible
School. Ben and Charlie are in the 5th grade at Freedom
Intermediate and Harriet is in the 4th grade at Johnson
Elementary. We are grateful that God has called them to join
our congregation, and we look forward to growing as disciples
together.
NEW MEMBERS
Come walk in the woods, sit in the rocking chairs on the porch, and grow
closer to God as you spend the weekend with other FPC women at NaCoMe
November 15-17. Women of all ages are invited for the whole weekend or
just for Saturday.
We will be blessed by our time in community surrounded by the beauty of
creation and by Rev. Dr. Lil Smith who will lead our retreat. Lil is the sister of
one of our members, Lissa Bradford. She is a Minister of Word and
Sacrament in the PC(USA) and lives in the Dallas area. She led our retreat in
2015, and we are looking forward to another wonderful weekend together.
Sign ups will begin next month, but mark your calendar today to join us.
WOMEN’S RETREAT AT NACOME
Why attend a Women’s Retreat? This is what a past
participant wrote about their experience.
“As I reflect on the retreat I am grateful for the opportunity
to have a new story to tell. I have new memories with a
unique gathering of my sisters in Christ. Glennon Doyle's
term ‘sistering’ sums of the weekend best. We sistered
together and shared our faith experiences, our messy lives,
our joys and our laughter which were all life giving. “

STEPHEN MINISTRY
Life is full of transitions that create stress. School starting, moving to a new city, career changes, illness,
children going to college or moving back home. Stress. Don’t try to manage it on your own. Our Stephen
Ministers are here to listen and to support you. For a confidential referral, call the FPC Franklin Stephen
Ministry voicemail at 615-746-7888 or email [email protected]. Our Stephen Ministers are
ready to care for you.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy
and peace in believing, so that by the
power of the Holy Spirit you may abound
in hope.” - Romans 15:13
VISITATION MINISTRY
Do you enjoy visiting with others? If so, the Visitation Ministry would be a great way for you to respond to
God’s grace by visiting a member who isn’t able to come to church and
would appreciate a visit. You are matched with a different person
each month so everyone gets to know new people.
We provide all the training you need and have a training scheduled
this Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. in the parlor. If you plan to attend, want
to learn more, or are interested but the training times do not work for
you, contact Karen Hanson ([email protected] or 407-341-3944.)
We look forward to having you join the team.
MEAL MINISTRY
The worship flowers were recently donated in honor of all who serve within the Meal Ministry by
someone who has received meals and knows how much it means to be fed by your church family. Taking
a meal is a tangible way to show God’s love to others who
are grieving or enduring an illness. Food provides
sustenance for our bodies, but a meal from your church
family also provides sustenance for your soul.
For more information or to volunteer within this important
ministry, please contact Sue Mahurin by phone or text at
615-516-7013 or by email at [email protected]. We look
forward to hearing from you.

Thank you so much for First Presbyterian’s generous donation to Hard Bargain Association. I am grateful for your support. You are a tremendous blessing to the families we serve in the Hard Bargain neighborhood. Your partnership with us helps offer the life changing gift of homeownership for hard working people like Terrell Hodge. He recently signed a contract to build a new home for his family on Glass Street in Hard Bargain. Sincerely, Brant Bousquet, Executive Director Hard Bargain Association
Dear First Presbyterian Church, We give thanks to you for your support of Special Offerings, our collective witness to the love of Jesus Christ. By participating in Special Offerings, your congregation joins other churches to change lives around the world through ministries of compassion, advocacy, development, peacemaking, Christian formation, education, and witness. We received your gift of $990.00 for One Great Hour of Sharing. Again, thank you for giving to enable all people to know God’s life-giving welcome in Jesus Christ. With gratitude to God for our shared mission, Bryce Wiebe Director, Special Offerings and Appeals
Dear First Presbyterian Church, Your August gift of $1,000 is already helping our hungry brothers and sisters! You are putting healthy, nourishing food on the tables of individuals and families who are struggling to get by. Partnering with Society of St. Andrew, you engage volunteer gleaners in hands-on mission and service; you help send large loads of fruits and vegetables to where it is most needed; you support local feeding agencies in every part of the country; and you reduce food waste. Thank you for your prayers for this ministry and your financial support. Together we are “Gleaning America’s Fields and Feeding America’s Hungry.” With you in Christ’s service, Chesley R. Vohden Society of St. Andrew
A Heartfelt "Thank You" From the Family of Bill Beavers: In the wake of the recent passing of my beloved husband and loving father of our sons, I wanted to sincerely thank everyone for their thoughts, deeds, love and prayers during this very trying time. Through your efforts and the everlasting love of our Eternal Father, the days are getting brighter. May God Bless You and Your Loved Ones. Jean Beavers and Family
