-Description: Informational brochure for recreational activities found in the capital of

Iceland

-Programs Used: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop

-Date: December 5 2015

-Course: Communications 130 Section 5- Visual Communications

-Instructor Name: Joel Judkins

-Objective: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo and

use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images,

not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so

the text follows the cutout shape of the image. Write at least 250 words of original copy in

at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex

(two-sided) color.

-Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I used Photoshop to crop the front cover picture to the

right dimensions and add the text I wanted. For the front title text I used soft overlay

so you could see the clouds through the text. I then picked my favorite picture of a

whale and learned how to use the lasso tool to crop him out. I placed it in InDesign

and used the pen tool to allow the text to wrap around the whale. I used InDesign

for the rest of the brochure. I placed text and pictures in a easy way for eyes to

follow and I tried to not trap any white space. I made the logo on the back using

a picture of Iceland as the “D” in Iceland.

-Description: A webpage I created to explain the process of a logo I created.

-Programs Used: TextWrangler on an Apple computer

-Date: November 21 2015

-Course: Communications 130 Section 5- Visual Communications

-Instructor Name: Joel Judkins

-Objective: Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so t he long side is

300 – 500 pixels. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it

appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal

to target audience, design skills, etc,) Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all

required tags – Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2,

p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog) Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.

(Customize the provided CSS provided to format the HTML to complement the logo design.

Change at least the following: The h1 text color & h1 background color, font colors for theparagraphs & list items, the background color, font families and add at least one css

comment.) Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker. Open the

HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins

for printing.

-Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I first started by writing out a basic html page

using TextWrangler. I inserted the logo and text of how I created my logo. I did

a little bit of styling in html with the headers and un-ordered list. In order to do

more graphic styling I used a pre made CSS template. I changed the font to

Perpetua and changed the sizes for different paragraphs. I googled how

to insert an image as a background which changed my original color.

scheme from brown to black. I went back and changed the color of

my logo to match. I used the FOCUS principles of flow, repetition and

white space to design the layout.

-Description: Puppy Playhouse is a company set up like a petting zoo designed to helpstudents on campus who are stressed and need some relief. For a small fee they can

come anytime to pet and hold puppies.

-Date: December 12 2015

-Course: Communications 130 Section 5- Visual Communications

-Instructor Name: Joel Judkins

-Objective: Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal

image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous de-

signs.

-Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I used Adobe Illustrator to create this logo. I started with

the simple design of the barn used in the background then used line tools and brush tools tocreate the puppy. By using the “follow the path” text tool I was able to have the text follow

the barn roof. I did three different design elements with this one logo to show different

ways it can be used, original, greyscale and bolded with a background circle.

-Date: December 12 2015

-Course: Communications 130 Section 5- Visual Communications

-Instructor Name: Joel Judkins

-Objective: Create a business card for an upcoming business using Adobe Illustrator with

an authentic logo.

-Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I used Adobe Illustrator to try out different logo ideas andfound one that worked well for the company and audience I am trying to reach. I wanted it

to be professional but fun. I used a picture of hay for the background and used matching

typography for the company name and name of the C.E.O. I chose a lighter text for the

contact information so that it was easier to read.

-Description: Letter head for Puppy Playhouse

-Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator

-Date: December 12 2015

-Course: Communications 130 Section 5- Visual Communications

-Instructor Name: Joel Judkins

-Objective: Create a letter head for an upcoming business using Adobe Illustrator and hav-

ing an authentic logo.

-Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I used Adobe Illustrator to shrink the logo and put it in

the corner of the page. I used the pen tool to design the grey curved section. I again used

the same font for the company name and the name of the C.E.O of the business and

changed the text for the contact information. It’s a simple layout but I believe it focus-

es on the important information.

Photo Design

-Description: For this project I took a picture of bikes locked up on a bike rack and

quoted an inspirational quote relating bike rides to life.

-Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop

-Date: October 17 2015

-Course: Communications 130 Section 5- Visual Communications

-Instructor Name: Joel Judkins

-Objective: Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match

those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digital camera to take a

quality image, then download it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool

on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.) Size and crop the image, then place

on an 8.5x11 page layout. Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Pho-

toshop. Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.

-Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I knew I wanted to use this particu-

lar quote because I love the idea of life moving forward. I sketched out some different

ideas with different placements of the bikes. Using a camera I shot this picture focus-

ing on repetition with the bikes and the curves of the sidewalk. I adjusted the image

levels, saturation, color balance, and used the sharpen tool to adjust the image

appropriately.

-Description: A project designed to inspire and show the power of masking in photoshop

through a montage.

-Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop

-Date: October 17 2015

-Course: Communications 130 Section 5- Visual Communications

-Instructor Name: Joel Judkins

-Objective: Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow. Unify a layout

with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or more images

together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout

with multiple elements. Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image. Apply typogra-

phy principles. Select good quality images

-Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): I used a variety of sketches

to try to develop the message I wanted to share and different design elements I wanted

to include. Through Adobe Photoshop I used two different pictures to create a peaceful

setting. Using the mask feature I added the loving picture of our Savior to add validity to

the scripture He spoke in John 14:27. I adjusted the image levels of the background

picture.

-Description: This is an event ad for a bake sale at a local sewing shop.

-Programs Used: Microsoft Word

-Date: October 10 2015

-Course: Communications 130 Section 5- Visual Communications

-Instructor Name: Joel Judkins

-Objective: Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together) Find, scan and

import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color scheme and type-

face(s) that work for your message and audience. Learn to use only Word design features

without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

-Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I used Microsoft Word to design an

event ad. I believe this shows versatility in using a variety of programs to design quality

media. I used a scanner to copy a picture from a holiday cookbook to showcase this

idea of a bake sale. The focus principles I used was the alignment on the right sided

of the event ad.
