MESSAGE FROM FATHER TOM

I am happy to turn the calendar to 2021. I know that not every sorrow of 2020 will be wiped away in the new year but we celebrate many gi s in our liturgy and faith tradi on that may help us with the pain, disappoint-ments and fears of 2020. When the pandemic first came upon us, we were frightened. The fear was not irra onal; the disease was spreading at a frightening rate. The Catholic bishops of the U.S. stated that there was a “serious reason” to not a end Mass and issued a dispensa on. However, there is a silver lining to everything, and history has certainly shown that world crises can become the impetus to great development both in the church and in the wider world. For instance, parishes and ins tu ons had to update their digital strategies in a hurry. Ministry had to move away from the tradi onal focus on large gatherings to prac ces such as family prayer, medita on on the Word of God, live streaming masses. Our parish staff, reduced both in number and in their pay have responded in posi ve ways to adapt our sacramental programs and all have joyfully taken on addi onal du es with the help of parish volun-teers. We look forward to the near future when with the new vaccines we will no longer have to limit the number of people a ending Mass.

Some parishioners have taken this temporary distance from the Eucharist as a lesson to grow in gra tude for God’s many gi s. But Mass on a screen or even a prayer in your heart doesn’t feel the same as being present at the Eucharist. Mass is about community, not spectators. Flesh and blood come together to share the flesh and blood of Jesus. The pandemic created a difficult situa on to which the church responded. But the ideal of the church is always with the people and with the sacraments. It is communal not virtual. As Catholics, it is in the Eucharist that we learn our iden ty. At the table of the Lord, Jesus makes a gi of Himself to us because God loves us so much. Just as we discover our iden ty at the family table, it is in the Eucharist that we discover who we are, why we are here, and what our mission is as disciples of Christ. The Eucharist is what dis nguishes us from most other Chris an churches, that the Body and Blood of Christ was actually, sacramentally present in our Church.

Through the Eucharist, we have direct contact with the Lord at the celebra on of Mass and in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. When we visit our Church at mes other than the celebra on of Mass, we can see the glow of the sanctuary lamp and know that Jesus is there for us. He is always wai ng silently and lovingly, ready to receive us and console us. Corpus Chris , the Body of Christ, may we renew our faith journey to build faith, inspire hope and ignite change as we strengthen the Catholic Church in our li le corner of Houston.

When I tell a story, I have a friend who prefers the “nutshell version” first.

A er that she’ll listen to me ramble, but she wants to know the

main point right off the bat. When reading and hearing Sunday scriptures one may o en find the

nutshell by looking at the responsorial psalm or the

Gospel acclama on. From Psalm 72 we hear

“Lord, every na on on earth will adore you.” The verse for the

Gospel acclama on is Ma hew 2:2 “We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” As a weary world, we need to

see the light, to follow with our ac ons and our words. This is the

same hope that is echoed in Isaiah 60:2 “See, darkness covers

the earth, / and thick clouds cover the peoples; / but upon you the

LORD shines, / and over you appears his glory.”

Don’t give up, friends. You must shine!

L S Primera Lectura:

Levántate y resplandece, Jerusalén, porque ha llegado tu luz y la gloria del

Señor alborea sobre . Mira: las nieblas cubren la erra y espesa niebla envuelve a

los pueblos; pero sobre resplandece el Señor y en se manifiesta su gloria.

Caminarán los pueblos a tu luz y los reyes, al resplandor de tu aurora. Levanta los

ojos y mira alrededor: todos se reúnen y vienen a ; tus hijos llegan de lejos, a tus hijas las traen en brazos. Entonces verás esto radiante de alegría; tu corazón se alegrará, y se ensanchará, cuando se vuelquen sobre los tesoros del mar

y te traigan las riquezas de los pueblos. Te inundará una mul tud de camellos y dromedarios, procedentes de Madián y de Efá. Vendrán todos los de Sabá

trayendo incienso y oro y proclamando las alabanzas del Señor.

Segunda Lectura: Hermanos: Han oído hablar de la

distribución de la gracia de Dios, que se me ha confiado en favor de ustedes.

Por revelación se me dio a conocer este misterio, que no había sido

manifestado a los hombres en otros empos, pero que ha sido revelado ahora por el Espíritu a sus santos

apóstoles y profetas: es decir, que por el Evangelio, también los paganos son coherederos de la misma herencia, miembros del mismo cuerpo y par cipes de la misma promesa en Jesucristo.

Evangelio: Jesús nació en Belén de Judá, en empos

del rey Herodes. Unos magos de oriente llegaron entonces a Jerusalén y preguntaron: “¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que acaba de nacer? Porque vimos surgir su estrella y hemos venido a adorarlo”. Al enterarse de esto, el rey Herodes se sobresaltó y toda Jerusalén con él. Convocó entonces a los sumos sacerdotes y a los escribas del pueblo y les preguntó dónde tenía que nacer

el Mesías. Ellos le contestaron: “En Belén de Judá, porque así lo ha

escrito el profeta: Y tú, Belén, erra de Judá, no eres en manera alguna la menor

entre las ciudades ilustres de Judá, pues de saldrá un jefe, que será el

pastor de mi pueblo, Israel”. Entonces Herodes llamó en secreto a los magos, para que le precisaran el empo en que se les había aparecido la estrella

y los mandó a Belén, diciéndoles: “Vayan a averiguar cuidadosamente qué hay de ese

niño y, cuando lo encuentren, avísenme para que yo también vaya a adorarlo”.

Después de oír al rey, los magos se pusieron en camino, y de pronto la

estrella que habían visto surgir, comenzó a guiarlos, hasta que se detuvo encima

de donde estaba el niño. Al ver de nuevo la estrella, se llenaron de inmensa alegría.

Entraron en la casa y vieron al niño con María, su madre, y postrándose, lo

adoraron. Después, abriendo sus cofres, le ofrecieron regalos: oro, incienso y mirra.

Adver dos durante el sueño de que no volvieran a Herodes, regresaron

a su erra por otro camino.

Brothers and sisters: You have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was

given to me for your benefit, namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revela on. It was not made known to people in other genera ons as it has

now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the

Gen les are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise

in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Gospel:

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,

saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and

have come to do him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was

greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been wri en

through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem,

land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my

people Israel." Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the me of the star's appearance. He sent

them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him

homage." A er their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star

that they had seen at its rising preceded them, un l it came and stopped over the

place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on

entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage.

Then they opened their treasures and offered him gi s of gold, frankincense,

and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they

departed for their country by another way.

MENSAJE DEL PADRE TOM Estoy feliz de cambiar el calendario al 2021. Sé que no todos los dolores de 2020 desaparecerán en el nuevo año, pero celebramos muchos dones en nuestra liturgia y tradición de fe que pueden ayudarnos con el dolor, las decepciones y los temores de 2020. Cuando la pandemia nos sobrevino por primera vez, estábamos asustados. El miedo no era irracional; la enfermedad se estaba extendiendo a un ritmo aterrador. Los obispos católicos de los EE. UU. Declararon que había una "razón seria" para no asis r a misa y emi eron una dispensación. Sin embargo, hay un lado posi vo en todo, y la historia ciertamente ha demostrado que las crisis mundiales pueden conver rse en el ímpetu de un gran desarrollo tanto en la iglesia como en el mundo en general. Por ejemplo, las parroquias e ins tuciones tuvieron que actualizar rápidamente sus estrategias digitales. El ministerio tuvo que alejarse del enfoque tradicional en las grandes reuniones a prác cas como la oración familiar, la meditación en la Palabra de Dios, misas virtuales en vivo. El personal de nuestra parroquia, reducido tanto en número como en salario, ha respondido de manera posi va para adaptar nuestros programas sacramentales y todos han asumido con alegría tareas adicionales con la ayuda de los voluntarios de la parroquia. Esperamos el futuro cercano cuando con las nuevas vacunas ya no tengamos que limitar el número de personas que asisten a misa. Algunos feligreses han tomado esta distancia temporal de la Eucaris a como una lección para crecer en gra tud por los muchos dones de Dios. Pero la Misa en una pantalla o incluso una oración en tu corazón no se siente igual que estar presente en la Eucaris a. La misa se trata de comunidad, no de espectadores. Carne y sangre se unen para compar r la carne y la sangre de Jesús. La pandemia creó una situación di cil a la que respondió la iglesia. Pero el ideal de la iglesia es siempre con la gente y con los sacramentos. Es comunal, no virtual. Como católicos, es en la Eucaris a donde aprendemos nuestra iden dad. En la mesa del Señor, Jesús se regala a sí mismo porque Dios nos ama tanto. Así como descubrimos nuestra iden dad en la mesa familiar, es en la Eucaris a donde descubrimos quiénes somos, por qué estamos aquí y cuál es nuestra misión como discípulos de Cristo. La Eucaris a es lo que nos dis ngue de la mayoría de las otras iglesias cris anas, el hecho de que el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo están realmente presentes, sacramentalmente en nuestra Iglesia. A través de la Eucaris a, tenemos contacto directo con el Señor en la celebración de la Misa y en la oración ante el San simo Sacramento. Cuando visitamos nuestra Iglesia en otros momentos que no sean la celebración de la Misa, podemos ver el resplandor de la lámpara del santuario y saber que Jesús está ahí para nosotros. Siempre está esperando en silencio y con amor, dispuesto a recibirnos y consolarnos. Corpus Chris , el Cuerpo de Cristo, que podamos renovar nuestro viaje de fe para construir la fe, inspirar esperanza y encender el cambio mientras fortalecemos la Iglesia Católica en nuestro pequeño rincón de Houston. pueblo de Israel será la vía para que el Salvador venga a todos aquellos que buscan a Dios con un corazón

sincero. Esto trae consigo la alegría y el resplandor de la gloria de Dios a todo el mundo y para todas las
