A welcoming place where all abilities come together to enjoy sports and recreation

THE LAST 12 MONTHS – OPERATIONS REPORT Overall, OXSRAD had an encouraging year with increased membership and a stronger year financially. We continue to see encouraging growth in the number of people using OXSRAD. Since the gym refurbishment 3 years ago and the subsequent introduction of pay-as-you-go membership we have seen the popularity of this element of OXSRAD grow considerably. All our base programmes continued and we welcomed Piggy Lane as a new associate group. Other groups such as local PCT, McIntyre No Limits, Keen, Active Heart, Look Oxfordshire, Southern Health, My World, Oxfordshire Hospital Schools, Kingfisher School, Styleacre, The Crossings, Oxfordshire Day Services and Ormerod School continued to use us regularly. Our children’s summer sports schemes and after school activity programmes continue to be popular. The seed funding for these that was provided by Children-in-Need has finished and we are self-funding the programmes. Our Facebook is becoming extremely popular with over 280 followers. We have now introduced additional fund-raising approaches - easyfundraising.org as an option to earn additional income for OXSRAD via on-line shopping and we have just introduced a text giving option via JustGiving.OXSRAD covered about 59% of its running costs internally via membership, activity fees, rentals and profits on the bar and kitchen. Conversely, we relied on voluntary donations to cover the remaining 41%. For perspective this means that OXSRAD is self-funding all operating costs, administration and one staff member. We then rely on donations to help fund the additional staff who specifically work with our disabled clients. We believe this is an attractive model in terms of benefit provided to the disabled versus costs involved. Other centres rely on donations to cover basic running costs as well as staff costs. However, the environment for fund-raising remains very challenging and we are always looking for ways to boost the internally generated income. We are just starting a new programme of spinning classes for disabled groups as well as members of the local community. We believe that this will boost the income made internally from activity fees and membership by 2.5% of the total. We are looking for yet further ways to ensure greater predictability of income.OXSRAD offers an attractive recreation centre for many people in the neighbourhood and we still believe we can attract many more. This is essential to improve the on-going sustainability of the charity as these users provide a consistent source of activity fees, rentals and profits from our bar and kitchen.Donations this year have been received from the PF Charitable Trust, Headington Road Runners, the Stanton Ballard Charitable Trust, the 29 May 1961 Charity, the Sandford Trust, St Michael’s and All Saints, the Doris Field Charitable Trust, The Fitton Trust, Old Marston Parish Council, the Mid Counties Co-op, OISE plc, Unipart and several donors who wish to remain anonymous. Our thanks go to all those donors who have supported us so generously.

We continue to be well used by other fitness groups. As well as the rentals received, they represent a very important element of voluntary support. The most significant of these continued to be the Headington Road Runners. They had runners participating in the London Marathon and held an 80’s party – all in aid of OXSRAD. Another highlight was the 5-mile race they organised that goes through OXSRAD’s neighbourhood. This event increases in popularity every year and in 2015 was fully booked out with 337 runners. 12 corporate teams took part in addition to many club runners and OXSRAD members. Our sincerest thanks go to all of them. Another thanks goes to AfreakA Aerials, who performed a show which added around £1,000 to our general funds. A Craft Fayre, Health and Well-Being day, raffle and supermarket collection days all added to our fund-raising income. We are sad to report this year that one of OXSRAD’s longest-living supporters, Betty Standingford died. Betty Standingford was Lord

Mayor of Oxford when OXSRAD was founded and carried on being one of our Vice-Presidents for the rest of her life-time. Our condolences go to all her friends and family.

We also commemorated the 100th anniversary of the birth of OXSRAD’s founder, Alan Porter-Smith. Alan was the driving force behind the creation of our centre founding the original organisation in 1982. The centre was opened in 1989 and Alan received an MBE for services to disability sport in 1996. He died in 1997. A board outlining all his contributions to OXSRAD has been on display in the centre.MEMBERSHIP OVERVIEW As of June 2015, we had over 490 direct registrations an increase of 18% in just over a year. Of the total, about 41% are concession /disability memberships and these have never been higher in the charity’s history. The need we are fulfilling is clearly as pressing as it ever was. However, the big growth year on year is largely attributable to the introduction of a pay-as-you-go gym membership scheme. We established this during 2014 with the express purpose of attracting more local residents and it appears to have been successful. This programme which offers unlimited use of the gym for £26 a month is more competitive versus other local gyms and appeals to users unable to or unsure about making a full year commitment. As in previous years, we have over 900 other people using the centre coming from other local organisations. These cover a full range of abilities from the active to those with serious physical or mental disability. Our aim is not just to provide facilities and staff to meet the needs of those with disabilities, but to provide an environment where all enjoy activities together.STAFF

We appreciate the work done by all our staff, but in particular by our centre manager, Paul Saxton who gives so much of his time to help the centre and its users.

GOVERNANCE / COMPLIANCE We ensure that we are operating in compliance with appropriate legislation and best practices. The charity has well-documented and active policies in the area of Health and Safety, non-discrimination, customer care / complaints, financial controls, etc. During the year, policies on finance, risk, health and safety and the employee handbook were all updated. Due to our staff working with vulnerable people, they and the officers undergo DBS (Disclosure and Barring) checks. The staff and all committee members also received Generalist Safeguarding Training in April 2014.

The committee met 11 times in 2015/16 and has sub-committees for fund-raising and staff matters. All committee members stand for re-election at our Annual General Meeting. In addition, Vice Presidents and the President stand for re-election on a rolling 3-year basis. FINANCIAL REPORT Financially, we had a satisfactory year. We made a surplus of £7,397 in our unrestricted accounts which brought our reserves into positive territory – even after allowing for the potential full repayment of a long-term loan which stands at £25,000. However, this loan has no fixed repayment date and is accruing no interest. Our restricted accounts showed a deficit of £(17,152) that is primarily made up of depreciation of the centre which is occurring over 60 years and various pieces of equipment bought within the last 3-4 years. This element has no impact on cash flow. Our combined deficit was £(9,755). All sources of income showed improvement. “Internal” sources of income, such as membership, activity fees, bar profits (income less costs) and lettings rose by a combined £13,157 from £81,836 to £94,993. “External” grants and donation income also rose by £6,583.Overall expenditure rose by £16,184, mostly due to increased investment in staff who remain our primary means of delivery of our charitable benefit. However, we also saw an increase of

~£5,000 in centre costs as we caught up on some needed maintenance and ~£2,000 in cost of stock for the bar and kitchen – the latter more than offset by increased turnover. Governance costs of £720 were the lowest ever for the charity.
