SHIPYARD ACTIVITIES GREATER RISK?

• Most of the external areas of rig / dock could be considered a ‘Red Zone’ • Leg erection • Multiple overhead activities • Multiple crane operations • Dry dock activities • Multi-cultural workforce • Short term sub-contractors • PERSONNEL NOT TAKING OWNERSHIP OF THEIR WORK PLACE

Presenter
Presentation Notes
During the construction period, just about every area is a ‘Red Zone’, work going on aloft at all times. Many of the personnel on site have limited training on prevention of drops or indeed what to look out for. Often when we ask someone why they left something which could roll off a beam, they say it can’t roll as the rig isn’t moving. They don’t see the bigger picture that sooner or later, the rig will move and the item they’ve left there will drop! Again, they just do their job and it’s someone else’s problem to pick it up…..or more importantly, it’s someone else’s problem when it drops! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE DON’T TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THEIR WORKPLACE

SHIPYARD ACTIVITIES REDUCED RISK?

• No breakdowns, time to plan • No downtime, time to plan • No drilling activities, jarring, jacking, anchor handling etc • Limited adverse weather conditions • No helicopter operations • PERSONNEL MUST TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THEIR WORK PLACE

Presentation Notes
Actually, certain aspects of the working environment make shipyards and construction sites safer places to work than operational rigs.

How to reduce or eliminate dropped objects during the rig construction phase?

• Do all that is reasonably practicable to prevent anything falling. • Store items correctly • Risk assessments: • Barriers • Training • Supervision • Improve housekeeping • EVERYONE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR OWN WORK PLACE

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Where it is necessary to prevent injury or damage to equipment, you must do all that is reasonably practicable to prevent anything falling. Personnel must ensure that nothing is stored or left in such a way that its movement is likely to injure anyone. Risk assessments: Dropped tools, debris or materials can strike persons below, causing serious injury or death. The risk assessment should identify work areas where objects may fall from, and list the appropriate control measures that will be taken. Train personnel on what to look and to be aware of Supervision to continually check areas for potential drops

OWNERSHIP OF THE WORK PLACE

• Review job • Make others aware of what you are doing and what the task involves • Have a secured container at the work site to handle items • Remove all potential dropped objects every time before leaving the area of

work, including break periods. • Do not wait for weekly ‘Derrick and Scaffold Sweep’ • BE PROUD OF YOUR WORK PLACE

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Review job, decide what tools and material you actually need to perform the task in hand Ensure everyone is aware, that you are working at height, this can either be having barriers in place to prevent people to be in the ‘danger area’ or the need for a work platform to stop anything falling Have a secured container at the work site to handle items which have the potential to be a dropped object such as, spent welding rods, grinding disks, washers, nuts, bolts etc
