Section II – Operation

Safety Tip/Warning: Carbon Dioxide discharge is very cold and could cause burns, frostbite orblindness.

Safety Tip/Warning: Carbon Dioxide displaces oxygen and in confined spaces can causeasphyxiation with concentrations over 15%.

These instructions are general in nature. The operator should always understand and be familiar with the specificinstructions printed on the individual nameplate prior to any potential fire situation.

General Procedures:1. Transport/push extinguisher to an

unwind fIre position.

2. Remove hose and horn from retainerand secure horn in one hand.

3. Pull ring pin and pull cylinder valve leverall the way forward.

4. Approach fore from upwind position to recommended distance on nameplate and aim horn at base of flames.

5. Depress discharge valve lever to full openposition and with sweeping motion direct agent across full front edge of fire until extinguisher is complete.

6. When fire is out, release discharge valve lever and stand by, being alert for possible flash backs. After fire, evacuate and ventilate area as a fire decompositionproducts may be hazardous.

7. Close cylinder valve by raising lever to upright position. Replace pin.

If you have any questions or desire actual fire extinguisher training utilizing extinguishers, contact your localdistributor or Buckeye for assistance.

Section III – Inspection

Definition: Inspection is the “Quick Check” of an extinguisher to ensure it is available and ready to use in the event of a fire. It is intended to give reasonable assurance that the extinguisher ischarged and operable.

Frequency: Extinguishers shall be inspected when initially placed into service and thereafter atapproximately 30 day intervals. When circumstances require, more frequent intervalsmay be necessary.

Note: If inspection of an extinguisher reveals a discrepancy, the extinguisher should besubjected to the applicable maintenance procedure.

General Procedures:1. Ensure extinguisher is in its designated

place with no obstructions to block itsvisibility or access. Immediately correctany discrepancy.

2. Ensure operation instructions are legibleand tamper/inspection seal is intact.

3. Determine condition by weighing or hefting (Rotate unit on wheel axis todetermine agent movement) unit.

4. Visually observe hose and horn for anyobvious damage and ensure nozzle is not plugged or obstructed.

5. Observe overall unit for any physical damage, corrosion or leakage and ensure wheels are properly inflated/operable.

Section IV – Maintenance

Definition: Maintenance is the thorough examination of an extinguisher and is intended to providemaximum assurance that it will operate effectively and safely if needed. This examinationwill determine if hydrostatic testing is necessary and if the repair/replacement of serviceable items is in order.

Frequency: Maintenance of extinguishers shall be performed at least annually or whenever an inspection discrepancy dictates.

Note: Per NFPA-10 extinguishers out of service for maintenance shall be replacedby spare extinguishers of the same type and at least equal rating.

Safety Tip/Warning: Ensure horn is directed in a safe direction prior to depressing lever in theevent there is pressure which might cause injury.

Safety Tip/Warning: Because cylinders are under pressure, whenever handling cylinders whichare not secured, always utilize protective cylinder caps.

General Procedures:1. Ensure cylinder operation valve lever,

safety disc and inspection seal are correct, undamaged and intact.

2. Rotate unit about wheel axis and ensure no internal metallic sounds are generated from within the cylinder, which could indicate a loose or brokenpick-up tube.

3. Inspect cylinder for any damage, corrosion or dents per CGA – pamphlet C-6. Ensure date stamped onto cylinder dome does not exceed 5-yearhydrostatic retest requirements. Refer to Section V for additional requirements and information.
