Kenmore's DUAL-ACTION'" Agitatorgives you flexible fabric care for evenyour largest loads.

The best cleaning actionin your washer takes placeat the bottom where theagitator vanes move backand forth to flex the fabric, loosening the soil.

The upper portion of theagitator moves in onlyone direction to help youwash larger loads• The clockwiserotation of the agitator forces the clotheson top down to the bottom where mostof the washing action is.

UNDERSTANDING NORMALWASHER SOUNDS

Your new laundry center's washer maymake sounds that your old washer didn't.Because the sounds are; unfamiliar, youmay be concerned about them.

The following describes some of thenormal sounds you may hear and whatcauses them.

During WashWhen you select a small load size set-ting for a small wash load, your washerhas a lower water level. With this lowerwater level, you may hear a clicking soundfrom the, upper portion of the agitator.

During DrainThe rate. that water is drained from yourwasher depends on your installation. Ifwater is drained quickly from the washer, you may hear air being pulled throughthe pump. -Ihis happens during the endof draining.

After Drain and Before SpinWhen the cycle changes from drainingto spinning, you may hear a noise as thegearcase shifts.

CYCLE DESCRIPTION -AUTOMATIC DRYING CYCLES

The automatic drying cycles(KNIT/DELICATE or PERMANENTPRESS/NORMAL) save you time byproviding the best drying resultsin the shortest time. This can helpyou save money on utility bills andreduce the risk of fabric damage.

Use the automatic drying cycles for mostloads. Drying time varies according totype of fabric, size of load, and drynesssetting.

KNIT/DELICATE CYCLE

• Use this cycle for most loads of knitted, delicate, or sheer fabrics. Clothes aredried at low heat. When the drynessselected is reached, the dryer goes intoa 5-minute (approx.) cool-down period..

PERMANENT PRESS/NORMAL CYCLE

• Use this cycle for sturdy clothes orpermanent press items. Clothes aredried at high heat. When the drynessselected is reached, the dryer goesinto a 10-minute (approx.) cool-downperiod.

Using Automatic Drying Cycles• Set the Cycle Selector Control (Timer)

to NORMAL DRY (*) which is good formost fabrics.

• At the end of the cycle, feel the driedclothes. If they are damp, select MOREDRY the next time you do a similar load.If they are overdried, select LESS DRYthe next time you do a similar load.

• Dryness is determined by thermostatsthat react to the amount of moisture inthe air exhausted from the dryer. Moistair indicates clothes are still damp. D.ryair indicates that moisture has beenremoved.

• The End-of-Cycle Signal sounds oncethe cycle is completed.

CYCLE DE-'SCRIPTION-TIMED DRY CYCLES

\TIMED DRY CYCLE

Use this cycle to get up to 50 minutesof heated d=ying time.

END-OF-CYCLE SIGNAL SOFT-HEA'PSYSTEM / ;_-,

Your dryer sounds a signal whena drying cycle is finished.

The signal is helpful when you are dryingpermanent press, synthetics, and otheritems. These items should be removedfrom the dryer as soon as it stops inorder to prevent wrinkles.

PUSH TO START DRYER BUTTON

Use this control to start the dryer.Be sure the dryer door is closed.

Opening the door stops the dryer. Itwill not start again until you close thedoor and press the PUSH TO STARTDRYER Button. Be sure the CycleSelector Control (Timer) is still on adry setting.

PUSH TOSTART DRYER

SOFT-HE._r _ System guards againstoverdryin£1. This helps your fabricsretain the natural moisture they need, prevents static, and reduces pilling-the formation of small lint.-like ballson the surface of garments. Pillingis the natural result of washing andwearing ot garments.

Kenmore dryers help prevent over-drying so you get outstanding fabriccare. In the automatic drying and_timeddrying cycles, clothes are dried at thetemperature you selected until the lastfew minute.,; of the cycle. The dryer thenswitches to low heat.

COOL DOWN

Approximately ten minutes before theend of the automatic drying and timeddrying cycles, clothes are tumbled with-out heat to help reduce wrinkles and makeclothes more comfortable to handle.

PREPARING CLOTHESFOR WASHING AND DRYING

Follow these recommendations tohelp save on utility bills and prolongthe life of your garments.

WASHING AND DRYING TIPS

• Close zippers, snaps, and hooks toavoid snagging other items. Removeheat-sensitive trim that can be damagedby drying. Tie strings and sashes sothey will not tangle. Mend tears, loosehems, and seams.

• Check garments for spots and stainsleft after washing. Do not tumble theseitems. Heat may permanently set stains.

• Check pockets before washing ordrying. Sharp or metal objects candamage your washer interior or dryerdrum. Do not lay these objects on yourlaundry center; they can damage thefinish. Turn pockets of heavy itemsinside out for even drying.

• Turn synthetic knits inside out beforewashing to avoid pilling.

• Stained or wet garments should bewashed promptly for best results.

• Place small items such as baby socksor hankies in laundry bag for easierremoval.

• Articles to be ironed should be removedfrom the dryer while still damp.

k

SORTING

• Separ, ate heavily soiled items fromlightly soiled ones, even if theywould normally be washed together.Sep_rate lint givers (towels, chenille)from li_t takers (corduroy, synthetics,perma;_ent press). When possible, turn lint givers inside out.

• Separate dark colors from light colors,colorl_ast items from non-colorfast items.

• Sort by fabric and construction(sturdy cottons, knits, delicate items).

LOADING

Proper loading of your laundry centercontributes to proper cleaning andfabric care and reduces machine noise.

LOADING TIPS - WASHER

• Drop items into washer loosely. Fillto the top of the basket (top row ofholes). Do not wrap items around theagitator. Items should move easilythrough wash water for best cleaningand wrinkle-free results. Items shouldsink and reappear later.

• Load washer properly and select correctwater level setting. Overloading or pack-ing the machine, and selecting a settingtoo small for the wash load can:

• cause poor cleaning• increase wrinkling• create excessive lint• wear out items faster

(because of pilling)• Load by the amount of space items

take up, not by their weight.• Mix large and small items in each load.

Load evenly to maintain washer balance. An off-balance load can make thewasher vibrate during spin.

• Use a higher water level setting to reducewrinkling with permanent press clothesand some synthetic knits. These itemsshould have more room 1:omove in thewater than heavy items (towels, jeans).

• Reduce wash time by using a lowerwater lew._lsetting. Loads with only afew small items need less wash time.

For these suggested full-sized loads, set the WATER LEVEL Control to thehighest water level setting.

LOADING TIPS - DRYER

• Mix large items with small items.Load the dryer by the amount of spaceitems take up, not by their weight. Donot overload the dryer. Overcrowdingcauses uneven drying and wrinkling, and can cause items to wear out faster(because of pilling).

• You may need to rearrange large items(sheets, blankets, tablecloths) duringa cycle to reduce bailing or rolling up.

• For better tumbling action, when dryingonly a few small items, add one or twolint-free towels. This also prevents smalllightweight items from blocking airflow.

USING DRYERFABRIC SOFTENERS

Dryer fabric softeners are recommendedfor reducing static cling. Always followpackage instructions carefully.

• Put one fabric softener sheet on topof the load before starting the dryer,Do not add a fabric softener sheet afterthe drying cycle has started. Instantheat can cause the fabric softener tospot fabrics.

• Remove fabric softener stains by wettingthe stains and rubbing them with liquiddetergent or bar soap and rewash.

• Some fabric softeners can clog thelint screen and slow drying. Use fabricsofteners labeled as dryer safe.

SAVING ENERGY

• Use the automatic drying cycles todry most loads.

• Dry full loads only. Do not overdry.• Avoid overloading dryer, adding wet

items to a partly dried load, or openinthe door unnecessarily.

• Shorten drying times by exhaustinglaundry center properly and cleaningexhaust vent and outside exhausthood as needed.

• Keel:, the lint screen clean.

• Use dryer where room air temperatureis above 45°E

• Sort loads by fabric weight and type.

STAIN REMOVAL RULES

Stained, heavily soiled, or greasy itemsmay need to be prewashed or soakedfor best results. Soaking helps removeprotein-type stains like blood, milk, orgrass. Prewashing helps loosen soilbefore washing.

• Use warm water for soaking or pre-washing stained laundry. Hot watercan set stains.

• Most stains are easier to remove whenthey are fresh. Old or set stains maynot come out. Follow package directionsfor pretreatment products.

• Before treating any stain, find out whatkind of stain it is, how old the stain is,what kind of fabric it is, and if the fabricis colorfast. (Check the care label.)

• Washing and drying can set somestains.

• Start with cold or warm water. Hotwater can set some stains.

• When bleach is recommended, usea bleach that is safe for the fabric.

• Test stain removers on an insideseam or hidden corner of the itemto see if the color is removed.

• Put the stained area face down on apaper towel or white cloth. Apply thestain remover to the back of the stain. This forces the stain off the fabricinstead of through it.

• Meat tenderizer or enzyme presoakshelp break down some protein stainsso they are easier to remove.
