PREPARING FOR THE ROADBefore venturing out on to the roadwith your motorhome, it is importantthat you prepare correctly.

Motorhome Weights Explained1.1 Mass in Running OrderThe weight of your motorhome as itleaves the factory, as new withstandard fixtures and fittings, plusan allowance for the driver of 75kgsand the mass of the fuel when thetank is 100% full.

1.2 Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass

The maximum mass the vehicle canbe when fully laden for use on theroad.

1.3 User PayloadThe load margin (payload), thisrepresents the difference betweenthe Mass in Running Order and theMaximum Technically PermissibleLaden Mass. It shows the maximumweight that can be loaded into yourmotorhome, covering items such as

food, crockery, cutlery, clothing, bedding, gas cylinders, and water inthe water tank and toilet etc.

2 LoadingIt should be noted that even weightdistribution is a major factor inmaking your motorhome an easyand pleasant vehicle to drive. Careshould therefore be taken inbalancing the load, ensuring thatheavy items are well spaced and arein as low a position as possible, forexample, low cupboards and bedboxes.

IMPORTANTDo not exceed recommendedmaximum loading for yourmotorhome.

2.1 Roof RacksSome models of motorhomes arefitted with a roof rack and ladder asstandard. Care is needed whenusing this facility. We recommendyou exercise extreme caution whenloading and unloading.

CAUTIONDo not allow children to climb ontothe roof. Do not exceed the statedmaximum load. Items fitted otherthan standard equipment willdeplete the payload stated in thishandbook e.g. generators.

2.2 Roof LoadingAll motorhomes have a speciallydesigned roof rack system fitted oravailable as an optional extra. Theroof of each motorhome isstrengthened to accommodate theroof rack, however, the strengthenedarea only relates to that containedwithin the roof rack area, and tostep beyond this area may causedamage to the roof.

Preparing for the Road3

Page 14: Owners Handbook - Elddis · AVANTGARDE AND AUTOQUEST, AUTOCIRRUS AND CALYPSO HANDBOOK 2008 1. 06 1.1 End Of Life Vehicle Directive Your new motorhome fully complies with the European

13

Please Note: The roof rack iscapable of withstanding a maximumweight of 12 stone/76kgs. Staticroof loading or top box loadingshould be limited to a maximum of76kgs including contents, or thelimit set by the top boxmanufacturer, whichever is the lowerfigure.

WARNINGUnder NO circumstances walk onthe over cab roof section

Before venturing out on to the roadwith your motorhome, it is importantthat you prepare correctly.

Roof loads should be evenlydistributed and securely fastened, but care must be taken not to over-tighten straps or ropes to the pointwhere roof rails or brackets maybecome distorted, particularly asduring braking and cornering, forcesexerted by straps or ropes aregreatly increased.

It is also worth noting that whencarrying heavy or large objects onthe roof, the vehicles handling maychange due to the resultantdisplacement of the centre of gravityand the increased area exposed tothe wind.

2.3 Bicycle RacksFitting a bicycle rack to the rearpanel of a motorhome will affecthow weight is distributed. There arerestraints to be aware of with suchfitments.

We would advise you to carry amaximum of 75kgs on the bicyclerack provided this does not exceedthe bicycle racks own weight limit.

The motorhome must also bebalanced to take into account thenew weight distribution. Weightmust be distributed evenly.

Bicycle racks are not standard fit orsupplied as an optional extra by TheExplorer Group. Explorer cannot be

held responsible for problemsrelated to a bicycle rack fitted by athird party. A copy of the rear paneldrawing must be obtained from TheExplorer Group to ensure correctfixing points are located.

MOTORHOME HANDLING

1 Best Practice

To gain the most enjoyment andensure a long life for yourmotorhome, the following should beobserved:

• Do not bump kerbs with wheels.

• When passing other vehicles allow more than the normal clearance.

• Allow longer to get up speed to pass. Do not suddenly swing out.

• Carry out all manoeuvers as smoothly as possible.

• Use the nearside wing mirror to check your motorhome has cleared when overtaking.

• Slow down and take care when driving over raised speed bumps, 'sleeping policemen' or when embarking/ disembarking ferries.

• In high or cross winds, travelingdownhill or in conditions of

poor visibility reduce your speed.

• High-sided vehicles can cause air buffeting so extra care must be taken when passing or beingpassed. Leave as much space as possible when overtaking these types of vehicles.

• When reversing, rear visibility can be difficult. Ensure there are no obstructions or ask someone to assist in guiding you back.

2. Speed LimitsBe sure to observe all statutoryspeed limits and adapt your speedto take account of prevailingweather and road conditions.

16

SITE ARRIVAL

1 Check Site RegulationsOn arrival at a campsite, you shouldalways check the site regulations. This will help avoid any unnecessaryconflict with site management andother site users.

2 Selecting A PitchCarefully select where you wish toplace your motorhome. The siteshould be as level as possible, preferably not under or near trees, well drained and away from possibleboggy areas. Consider how you willmove the motorhome when it is timeto leave the site. On sloping groundit is better to pitch facing downhill, especially during wet weather.

3 Lateral Leveling (Side To Side)A quick glance at your pitch shouldtell you if you are likely to need sideto side leveling i.e. leveling acrossthe axle. On uneven ground lateralleveling is accomplished by the useof a leveler jack or ramp and a spirit

level placed 'across' the motorhomefloor.

Leveler Jack - Place the levelerjack, folded flat, in front of the wheelthat is to be raised to level the axle.Drive the motorhome onto theleveler jack and adjust the heightuntil the spirit level shows that themotorhome is laterally level.

Ramp - Reverse onto your pitchabout a foot further back than youwish to end up. Then place theleveling ramp in front of the wheelthat needs to be raised.

Place a spirit level parallel to theaxle or just inside the motorhomedoor. It helps to have two people atthis point. One should drive themotorhome very slowly forwardmoving the wheel up the ramp, andthe other should indicate when thespirit level bubble is in the middle.

Whichever method you use, oncelevel, apply the motorhomehandbrake and chock themotorhome wheel if necessary.

The significance of REVERSEPOLARITY is that when equipmentis switched off, it may not beelectrically isolated. The onlycertain way of making equipmentsafe is to unplug it.

A means of checking the polarity ofthe mains supply when overseas isrecommended. There are availableseveral proprietary makes ofequipment for the purpose.

If it can be achieved, it is preferableto connect live to live, and neutral toneutral to maintain full electricalprotection.

CHECK all motorhome equipment isset-up to accept the site supplybefore actually switching on.

GAS SAFETY ADVICEIn the event of a suspected gas leakthe gas must be turned off using theisolation valve on the gas bottle. Acompetent gas fitter should thencheck the system before it is used /reused.

Regularly check flexible gas hose, joints and connections for tightness. Finally, make sure that each gasappliance is working efficiently tothe recommendations of theappliance manufacturers.

(See Index – Ventilation)

1 Facts about LPG • LPG is not poisonous.• Bi-products are harmless.• LPG is dangerous if all air and

oxygen is excluded.• LPG has been given a smell

by the manufacturer in order to identify leaks.

• The gas is heavier than air and therefore sinks to the lowest point.

2 Awning Spaces, LPG and Appliance Exhaust

There is no danger of pollution of anenclosed awning space from theLPG exhaust from a refrigeratorventing into it. Space heaters mayproduce sufficient exhaust to pollutethe awning space, if it is totallyenclosed, from a general comfort, smell and hygiene point of view. Inextreme cases there could be abuild up of carbon dioxide to adangerous level. Motorhome ownersare advised to allow some fresh aircirculation in the awning spacewhen such appliances are in use.

Please Note: Ventilation holes mustbe clear at all times.

3 LPG Gas SystemsThe Explorer Group does notrecommend the use of any externalcylinders. All cylinders in use shouldbe within the gas locker provided. Ifyou wish to utilise a larger cylinderand have this outside the gas lockerthen the connecting hose must not

exceed 750mm.

It is recommended that noflammable material is stored orplaced with 300mm of any openflame. Your attention is also drawnto the fact that the surface of thespace heater in your motorhome willget hot when in use. You areadvised not to use any additionalgas appliances outside yourmotorhome unless it is a gasbarbecue connected via thebarbecue point supplied with yourmotorhome.

Please ensure that you have readthe operating instructions for eachgas appliance contained in yourOwners Information Pack. Pleaseensure that any gas hose leftunconnected is protected from dirtor other foreign bodies entering thehose.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

1 12v Power Supply1.1 Battery Installation

Your motorhome will be fitted with aBCA Leisure or a CBE charging andpower distribution unit.

If you wish to install a leisure batteryplease ensure that it is placed on thebattery tray supplied with yourmotorhome. Then place the tray inthe battery locker fitted to the side ofyour motorhome. Connect thebattery to the clamp fittingsconnected to the connection leadswithin the battery box.

The Explorer Group recommendsthat you use sealed for life leisurebatteries of a minimum rating off 40ampere-hours at 20 hours dischargerate.

1.2 Battery MaintenanceYour leisure battery should bemaintained in accordance with themanufacture’s instructions. Forinformation on the automatic

charging system in your motorhomeplease refer to ‘Automatic ChargingSystem’ in the index.

Do not charge your leisure batterywith any charger other than thatsupplied. Failure to comply maycause damage to your battery. If youremove your leisure battery, ensurethat it is not placed on a cold surfaceas the battery will deteriorate morerapidly than if stored at a suitabletemperature

1.3 Generators / ChargerAll electrical equipment fitted in yournew motorhome can be run fromeither a controlled generator orcharger whose output is maintainedbetween 11volts and 14volts.

At least once every 3 years, themotorhome electrical installationshould be inspected and tested, anda report on its condition obtained, asprescribed in British StandardBS7671.

2 230vPower Supply

2.1 Mains UnitThe Mains Unit replaces theconventional fuse box. Similar, butlarger ones are often fitted in newhouses. The unit, normally located inthe wardrobe, gives overloads andearth leakage protection for the 230Velectrical supply in your motorhome.

For normal operation all switches onthe unit need to be in the ONposition. The switches on the left ofthe unit are known as MCB’s(miniature circuit breakers). Thesetake the place of the conventionalfuse but are more convenient. In theevent of a fault the MCB ‘trips’ i.e.automatically moves to the OFFposition. After elimination of the faultthe MCB can be re-set by switchingto the ON position (against thespring pressure in an upwardsdirection). If an earth fault develops,or a person was to touch a live pieceof equipment, the leakage of currentto earth should immediatelyoperatethe RCD (residual currentdevice) and ‘trip’ the main switch, to

the OFF position. This switch canonly be re-set after elimination of thefault.

Please Note: In case of difficulty, consult an approved electricalinstallation contractor (who may bethe local electricity board). It isdangerous to attempt modificationsand additions yourself.

CAUTIONLamp holder-plugs (bayonet- capadaptors) should not be used underany circumstances.

2.2 Resetting the RCDTo re-set, operate the switch as forMCB’s. Periodically, the RCD shouldbe checked by operating the testbutton marked ‘T’. The unit shouldimmediately switch to the OFFposition. If the unit does not switchoff then a qualified electrician shouldbe consulted. If the unit does switchoff, the test is complete and theswitch can be re-set restoring thesupply back to normal. Please Note: Simultaneous

operation of all of the 230V mainselectrical equipment may not bepossible. A typical UK site mainshook-up point provides a maximumoutput of 16 amps and on somecontinental sites the available outputmay be as low as 5 amps. If yourloading exceeds the site supply itmay trip the site circuit breaker. Please check the available mainsoutput with your site operator. Thefollowing items need to be addedtogether if used simultaneously.

2.3 230V Mains Equipment Typical Consumption Figures:

• Refrigerator 0.50 amps• Charger 0.50 amps• Water heater 3.9 amps• Blown air heaters 8.5 amps• Colour TV 2.50 amps• Microwave 4.00 amps• Air conditioning 4.00 amps

3 Automatic Charging SystemThe battery charger will operateautomatically when the motorhomeis connected to the mains outlet on a

motorhome site. The 12V system, with the exception of the 12Vrefrigerator and battery charging, willnot operate when the motorhome isconnected to the driving vehicle.

CHECK all motorhome equipment isset-up to accept the site supplybefore actually switching on.

CARE OF YOUR MOTORHOME

This section of the guide is devotedto the care, cleaning and generalpreservation of your motorhome inorder to retain its showroomcondition.

1 Exterior Body ShellThe exterior painted body shell ofyour motorhome, usually the sidewalls, is acrylic finished aluminium, which is extremely durable and easyto clean. It is recommended you firstwash off any caked dirt and mudwith cold water then use aproprietary brand wash and waxshampoo and rinse with plenty ofcold water.

CAUTIONUnder no circumstances should anabrasive or harsh cleaner be used.Do not use a pressure washer asthis can disturb mastic seals.

2 Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic (GRP)

GRP components need to bewashed, waxed and taken care oflike a car. Chemicals and dirt cancollect during storage, and the gelcoat can be stained or markedwhen chemicals combine with rainor dew. Most stains or marks can beremoved with mild dishwashingdetergent, but more stubborn marksmay require a (fine grit) rubbingcompound such as T-cut. To helpkeep your GRP components lookingalmost like new, it is wise to washthe parts monthly (or morefrequently) using mild dishwashingdetergent, but avoid using strongalkaline (e.g. trisodium phosphate)or acidic cleaners or abrasives.Waxing the components once ortwice a year with a good gradepaste wax will help to maintain thecolour and finish.

preserve their clarity andunblemished transparency it isessential that the following cleaninginstructions are strictly adhered to:Road grit, dust, sand, flies, lime treesecretions, bird droppings etc.,should be washed off using plentyof cold water do not use a spongeto clean off heavy dirt deposits. Anyremaining dirt should be washed offusing a soft cloth and warm water.Under NO circumstances shouldany abrasive cleaning agents, household detergents or proprietarycleaning fluids be used. Wash thewindow again using only cold waterand dry off with chamois leather.

Please Note: Should scratchesappear on the acrylic windowsthese can often be removed with anacrylic polish. E.g. ICI Perspexpolish. Gentle polishing with a liquidmetal polish, i.e. Brasso may alsohave the desired effect – consultyour retailer BEFORE attempting toremove any but the slightestscratch.
