POP Expands Supported Employment Program Through Gift Store and Laundromat Service
The grand opening of Porcupine Opportunities Program (POP) new gift store and full service laundromat was held on Tuesday, October 8th.
The new gift store, named “Bits N’ Pieces”, features hand-crafted products consigned by local and regional crafters as well as various items produced as part of the agency’s vocational programs. The store already has over 25 consigners marketing a wide variety of products. POP’s laundromat has been renovated, and now offers a variety of new services including: staff support Monday to Friday; a custom laundry service; a barber shop each Wednesday; and a small confectionary. Most recently POP has added “light mending” (hemming, buttons, and patches) to the service package.
The new services mark the expansion of POP’s supported employment program, which provides employment opportunities to individuals experiencing disability. Currently, 9 individuals are working at the store and laundromat in various roles that fit with their interests and abilities.
In addition to the introduction of the new services and employment opportunities, POP also recognized local businesses that are providing employment to individuals supported by the agency. They include: the Royal Canadian Mounted Police; Parkland Coop; Caroline’s Restaurant; Quilly Willy Early Learning and Childcare Centre; and Blair’s Funeral Home in Porcupine Plain as well as Lewellin’s Sales and Service and the Modeon Theatre in Hudson Bay.
POP thanks our partner businesses for their on-going role in supported employment. We also thank the community at large for all the support and enthusiasm they are showing for our newest venture!

LORD STANLEY COMES TO PORCUPINE PLAIN
Kelly Chase received a warm welcome on Thursday, October 24th, when he arrived home with the Stanley Cup. A call to Chase from the Chase Place Arena Fundraising Committee in Porcupine Plain sparked the fundraising event — the Committee needed to raise $20,000 for a new boiler. Chase, a Porcupine Plain native and former NHL player (including with the St. Louis Blues), was more than happy to help.
The community rallied together to have this event planned and organized with under two weeks’ notice! Parkland Co-op provided the burgers and drinks served at the event; Pasquia Agro provided the $500 Guaranteed 50/50; and, for the live auction, Richardson Pioneer donated Roughrider tickets and Affinity Credit Union donated Saskatoon Blades tickets. Several local businesses donated to bucket draws. Along with the cup, Chase brought several autographed jerseys and hockey sticks, to be auctioned off during the evening. And, if that wasn’t enough, Kelly and his wife, Raelynn, started the fundraising efforts with a donation of their own of $5,000!
Attendees stood in line and paid to have their photos taken with the Cup. From that, the sale of bucket draw and 50/50 tickets, the sale of burgers and drinks, and the live auction, the Committee was able to raise $14,291.20 — including Kelly and Raelynn’s donation of $5,000, a total of $19,291.20 was raised that evening!
The planning committee would like to thank the businesses and community members who donated, as well as those who volunteered their time and efforts to making this event successful. But, most of all, the community as a whole would like to thank Kelly Chase for his unwavering support of Chase Place Arena and for his Hometown!
REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2019

CANADA SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION
In October, Porcupine Plain native and former Saskatoon teacher, Colette Bourgonje, will be inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. Then, in November, she will be inducted into the Canadian Paralympic Hall of Fame.
Bourgonje competed in 10 Paralympic Games — seven winter in Para Nordic skiing and three summer in wheelchair racing —receiving three silver and seven bronze medals over her career.
Bourgonje said she was overwhelmed with the inductions. "I knew that (my nomination) had been submitted but I'm always so surprised when it is selected. I don't know why," she said.
While her Paralympic career might be over, she still skis.
"I'm still racing in Saskatche-wan with the kids," Bourgonje said.
"That's what I love about the sport. You don't have to quit racing. It never has to end."
