Live Chat Recap: Setting Yourself Up For Success in 2016
Gina Bianchini is no stranger to goal setting. She’s even the brains behind one of our favorite OWN IT posts on defining your Main Goal.
You can find that here: https://www.ownit.com/communities/ownit/posts/633510
Gina was sitting in the audience at a conference, and realized she was not happy with the way the day was going.
When she heard the speaker talk about the importance of having an intention for every guest, project, meeting and interaction, a lightbulb went off.
An Epiphany
Hence her #1 goal for 2016.
Start each day, each meeting and each activity with a simple question.
"What's my intention for doing this?"
An Epiphany
When we think about goal setting, we typically think about it as a once a year, once a quarter or once a month activity.
"What I realized sitting in the audience was that by writing my big goals down everyday AND then being clear at the start of every morning what I wanted out of each and every meeting, I could move to my goals MUCH more quickly."
You can find a more detailed explanation of the Morning Ritual here: https://www.ownit.com/communities/ownit/posts/633509
Get Into A Morning Ritual
"By carving out 30 minutes in the morning to think about what is success for every meeting, I am much less overwhelmed."
"My strong belief is that every person on the planet can find 30 minutes at some point. It may mean 10 minutes less Facebook here or one less news article there, but the return on these 30 minutes of intention and goal setting every day is invaluable.”
Find 30 Minutes Every Morning
Gina sets aside 30 minutes at the start of the day with no technology, no phone, just a blank piece of paper.
Start each day with a blank sheet of paper.
•Write down your goals. •Ask yourself 1 question. •Write down 20 ideas.
Start each day with a blank sheet of paper.
"I launch a new product that serves solo entrepreneurs so that they can make 10% more money by march 2016."
"I buy a house in (a specific location) in the first half of 2017"
Example Goals
By writing your goals down everyday, you keep them at the top of your mind.
"There is a direct connection between my brain, intention and a pen."
This is NOT a "to do" list. It's a way of placing your attention on your most important goals, regardless of the tasks of the day. It can help you put the most effort in to the most important tasks, rather than merely the most urgent.
A Practice of Attention and Intention
Ask Yourself One Specific Question
Move From
"I launch a new product by March 2016."
To
"What are the features we need to have and promote at launch?"
Take your goal, carve out a specific piece of the puzzle and go deep on that.
Ask Yourself One Specific Question
If you have trouble thinking of your question, Gina suggests calling to mind any fears.
"What could go wrong with this launch?" "What are we missing?"
"What am I most afraid of happening in this meeting?"
Ask Yourself One Specific Question
"As I take what is in my head and write down the questions I have, the fears I have, the things that are giving me anxiety, the focusing questions start to flow much more easily."
"I start with my fears and turn them into questions I can answer."
Ask Yourself One Specific Question
Come up with 20 ideas.
"When I ask myself a question like this -- and getting good at the questions is probably been more important for me -- and sit there with 20 ideas (even if most of them are bad), my perspective for the day ahead is different."
What about a to do list?
Gina says that with her intentions organized at the beginning of the day, she finds that she doesn't typically need a to do List.
She also tries to carve out 30 minutes on a Sunday morning or night to look at the prior week and what's important going into the new one.
"By creating a habit around goal setting, I a m m o r e a c t i v e , i n t e n t i o n a l a n d committed to where I 'm spend ing my time.”
