HISTORY

From the " Report of the Minister of Mines ", 1915, K 322:

A t the Calumet and Hecla, a property hal f a mile north-west

of the town of Poplar, within a few hundred yards of the railway-

t rack, development work was i n progress t h i s summer, On t h i s property

there is a mass of quar tz , having a s t r i k e of N 45 degrees W , and a

s l i g h t north-easterly d ip some 20 f e e t wide----- severa l open-cuts have

been made along the outcrop, and a s h a f t sunk thereon t o a depth of

3.4 f e e t . Samples across the bottom of the s h a f t , No. 1-5 f e e t of

quartz: gold .1 oz. ; s i l v e r 0.8 oz. : No. 2-3 f e e t o f quar tz , gold

and s i l v e r , t races: No. 3-4 f e e t mixture s c h i s t and quartz: gold

0.15 oZ.----

Two hundred and seventy f e e t down the h i l l north-easterly from

the s h a f t , and some f e e t below it, a crosscut was driven to tap

the vein.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

So i l r e s u l t s have indicated a r ea s i n which fu r t he r work should

be done. A de t a i l ed g r i d should be extended up the slope from

area "A". I n area "B", i s o l a t ed high s i l v e r and gold values should

be checked, and de t a i l ed s o i l g r i d s extended up the slope.!

PHYSIOGRAPHY

The Calumet claim group l i e s on the moderate t o s teep s lopes *Cr

west of Poplar Creek above the Lardeau River. The higher e levat ions

on the Mobbs claim have many rock b lu f f s and s l i d e areas . Some

logging has been done on the lower s lopes , but most of the claim

area i s still under t r e e cover.

ACCESS

Access t o the claims i s by Highway 31 north from Kaslo t o

Meadow Creek on paved road, then t o Poplar Creek on good a l l season

gravel road, a dis tance of 30 kilometers. The NE corner of the

calumet is 2400 meters from the Poplar Creek bridge on Highway 31.

PREVIOUS WORK

A descr ip t ion o f some previous work from MM. 1915 is given

under "History". Western Mines Limited d id an extensive s o i l survey

over the lower s lopes i n 1980, but d id no t go over 3500 f e e t i n

elevation i n general.

OBJECT OF WORK b

The ob jec t of the work was to assess the po ten t ia l o f d i f f e r e n t

a reas on the claims, and t o make a decision as to the d i rec t ion of

f u r t he r work t o be done. The locat ion of anomalies from the previous

work was a l s o es tabl ished.

GWLOGY

The Calumet claim area is underlain by Paleozoic rocks of the Index

Formation. Limy ch lo r i t e s ch i s t , massive greenstone , phy l l i t e s , and

p h y l l i t i c qua r t z i t e were the rocks most abundant i n the a r ea s worked.

West of the adit, l i g h t to dark phy l l i t e s were noted. I n the a rea of

s o i l s "B", greenstone was predominant.

There has been a number of open cu t s and s t r ipp ing done on the l a r g e

quar tz vein above the a d i t . Assays recorded i n the Minister o f Mines

give values of 0.15 and 0.1 f o r d i f f e r en t areas of the vein, and 0.1

oz. per ton gold i n the sch i s t . These were taken around the Calumet

sha f t which has no t been found.

The bes t sample r e s u l t was 0.016 OZ/T gold taken on the Calumet 2.

So i l s were collected with a narrow spade from 15 to 30 cm

below organic debris . Due t o some logged area i n "B", s o i l s

were coarse from samples 58 to 66 on l i n e 1.

by Chemex Labs.

ASSAY METHODS - ---

A 2 gram sub-sample Cs d i g e s t e d i n a h o t p e r c h l o r l c - n i t r i c a c i d m i x t u r e f o r two h o u r s , c o o l e d , t h e n t r a n s f e r e d i n t o a 250 m l . v o l u m e t r i c f l a s k . Aluminum C h l o r i d e is added a s a n i o n i z a t i o n s u p p r e s s a n t f o r Mo. The s o l u t i o n s a r e t h e n a n a l y z e d on a n a t o m i c a b s o r p t i o n i n s t r u m e n t .

ASSAY METHODS

Ag, Au (oz /T) :

S i l v e r and g o l d a n a l y s e s are done by s t a n d a r d f i r e a s s a y t e c h n i q u e s . I n t h e sample p r e p a r a t i o n s t a g e t h e s c r e e n s are checked f o r metallics which , i f p r e s e n t , are a s s a y e d s e p a r a t e l y and c a l c u l a t e d i n t o t h e r e s u l t s o b t a i n e d from t h e p u l p a s s a y .

I ,- 0.5 a s s a y t o n s u b s a m p l e s are f u s e d i n l i t h a r g e , c a r b o n a t e and s i l i c i o u s f l u x e s . The l e a d b u t t o n c o n t a i n i n g t h e p r e c i o u s metals is c u p e l l e d i n a m u f f l e f u r n a c e . The combined Ag & Au is weighed on a

I m i c r o b a l a n c e , p a r t e d , a n n e a l e d and a g a i n weighed as Au. The d i f f e r e n c e i n t h e two we igh ing is Ag.

FA-AA METHOD

The s a m p l e f u s i o n and c u p e l l a t i o n i s t h e same as t h e NAA-finish met hod.

Beads f o r AA f i n i s h are d i g e s t e d f o r 1 / 2 h r i n 1 m l HN03, t h e n 3 m l HC1 are added and d i g e s t f o r 1 hou r . The s a m p l e s are c o o l e d and made t o a volume o f 10 m l s , homogenized and r u n o n t h e AA a g a i n s t a q u e o u s s t a n d a r d s .

ARSENIC PPM -

A 1.0 gm s a m p l e is d i g e s t e d w i t h a m i x t u r e o f p e r c h l o r i c and n i t r i c a c i d t o s t r o n g fumes o f p e r c h l o r i c a c i d . The d i g e s t e d s o l u t i o n is d i l u t e d t o volume and mixed. An a l i q u o t o f t h e d i g e s t is a c i d i f i e d , r educed w i t h K 1 and mixed.
