From the Chairman.

Welcome readers, and a big thanks to Christine for the time and energy to produce this newsletter. Christine is one of a group of people recently elected to the committee at the ORRIS AGM held last August. So it's interesting to see new faces with new ideas and look forward to see what initiatives develop over the coming months.I have to say it was a relief to see a good turnout for the AGM. Organisations like ORRIS rely heavily on strong Community support because decisions made in the committee meeting room quite oftenimpact on others. Annual general meetings are the community’s opportunity to express their desires and provide feedback on the Organisation’s performance. Last month ORRIS hosted a pot luck dinner at the hall as an opportunity to meet and greet new residents. This was well attended and a good evening was had by all. Attendees were treated to a short performance by local band Latitude 39 who played some of their original work including their latest song entitled 'Along a forgotten highway' Market days are humming along nicely with a couple of new stall holders, one selling Xmas trees made from recycled decking timber that proved to be very popular.Currently Owhango has no representation on the National Park Community Board. With two vacancies available a by­election will be announced early in the New Year. 

This is an opportunity for anyone with an interest in Local government to become involved.

Bits and Bobs

Katy is new to Owhango and has a window display in the main street, with examples of her hand crafted jewellery, candles, soaps, and clothing. Her contact details are in the window and the shop willopen in the second week of December on Saturdays and Sundays. 

 Owhango Hotel is open on Friday nights and serves meals. Hamburgers, toasted sandwiches, chips are some of the tasty morsels on the menu. For private functions contact Grant 0276786461

The Blueberry Farm at 40 Owhango Road will open around mid­January (or earlier) for pick your own or pre picked blueberries. Open days will be Wednesday to Sunday. You can pick and picnic in the grounds of the farm. Delivery can also be organised. For more details call Malcolm 0273532842

OWHANGO SCHOOL 2016 BREAK UP 

The end of year break up will be held on Thursday 15 December, commencing at 6:00pm at the Owhango Hall.  

There will be brief items by the children, and end of year presentations. 

At the conclusion of formalities we will have our pot luck barbecue at the Owhango School.  

Please bring your own meat, cutlery, crockery and refreshments.  

There will be a shared salad and dessert table.    

Please ensure that any meat to be barbecued is defrosted. 

We plan this to be a whole community Christmas get together and barbecue.  

All most welcome to attend! 

Dave Edhouse Owhango Volunteer Fire Brigade

Owhango Volunteer Fire Brigade have been busy with training in recent weeks with a new recruit attending a seven day recruit course and another completing a Qualified Fire fighter course at NZ FireService national training centre in Rotorua. Also the whole brigade have just completed a day refresher course for first aid. This covered CPR and defibrillator usage as well as other medical conditions and trauma treatment. There was also a motor vehicle extrication training with National Park fire brigade.

There is a defibrillator on the Owhango Fire appliance as part of our medical kit. 

Don't forget to check your smoke alarms. If you need help with them contact a brigade member. 

Also with summer coming and the holiday period remember to be safe with fire, think before you light.The brigade wish the community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year and thank you for your fantastic support and donations during the year and for making our 50th Jubilee such a memorable occasion.

“As we head away over the Christmas/New year period, thieves and burglars often see this as an opportunity to do a little ‘Christmas shopping’ of their own.  

If you are heading away to the beach, it is a good idea to talk with a trusted neighbour and advise them of your travel plans and have them visit and check your property while you are away.

Any suspicious behaviour should be reported immediately to 111 and any other issues can be reported by calling the Taumarunui Police Crime Reporting Line (CRL) on 895 8119. 

Now is also a good time to visit www.snap.org.nz and record your valuable property on a database.

Also please take care on your travels as we all know the holiday period on our roads can be a minefield of poor displays of driving. Highway staff will be out on the roads targeting the “Fatal 5” which are:

­Speed (both fast and slow)

­Alcohol/Drugged driving

­Careless/Dangerous/Inconsiderate driving (including tailgating)

­Fatigue

­Restraints/Seatbelts 

If you witness any of the above don’t hesitate to call it in on either 111 or *555. Taking one of these drivers off the road could save a life this Christmas.

Owhango Alive

Owhango Alive is a volunteer conservation group whose mission is to look after the native flora and fauna in the Ohinetonga Reserve and along the Whakapapa River.

This area is home to many native birds including the endangered Whio (blue duck) and magnificent examples of New Zealand native bush.
