9. Brief background, History (antecedents), ~200 words
Give to UP is an online mechanism that makes it easy for UP students, alumni and friends –
wherever in the world – to help the university by funding one or more of these three major
campaigns: student scholarships, faculty grants and professorial chairs. While it allows donors to
send their support in cash or check, or through bank deposit or transfer, Give to UP was mainly
created to accept donations in real time through VISA card payment. This is a significant leap for UP,
not only as its first system-wide donation initiative but also as its first donation facility capable of
accepting funds through credit card. Donors, whether individual or combined, also get naming rights
for funding whole student scholarships, professorial chairs or faculty grants.
The vision towards what is now Give to UP was implemented by a core group of eUP and OVPAA
officials and staff. eUP, headed by AVP Jaime Caro and Dr. Anette Lagman, worked on the technical
aspect (building the website, database, and credit card donation platform) while OVPAA,
represented by Vice President Gisela Concepcion and staff member Alice Morta (and initially
Jeanette Burlat), created and refined the scheme itself and web content. Also part of the project was
the Office of the Vice President for Planning and Finance headed by Prof. Joselito Florendo which
addressed concerns relating to remittances, receipts and taxes.
In April, an infographic was created by Alice Morta and finalized by President Pascual himself to
explain the rationale and mechanics of the scheme. A month later, a dry run was conducted,
followed by further enhancements on content and interface. By June, the committee had decided to
call the site “Give to UP” and along with it assigned “giveto.up.edu.ph” as the site’s URL and adapted
a logo (designed by Alice Morta) that featured the UP Oblation and the word “Give”. In July 2015,
the donation forms had been finalized and endorsed to the Board of Regents.
In April 2016, "Bangon CAL-CSSP" was added to the campaigns to assist faculty members affected by
the Faculty Center fire.
