How to Run a Successful Change Crew
How to Run a Successful Change CrewStaying on message
You are the face of Senator Obama’s campaign, it is important to remember that at all times.
Your actions and how we interact with voters directly reflect on Senator Obama.
You will run into people who disagree with you, but we must always be respectful of others. Remember the motto—Respect, Empower, Include.

How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a canvassPre-PlanningFind a place that is centrally located to the area you
will be canvassing and to start your canvass from.Get approval to start from the location that has
been decided on.Create an event for your canvass on MyBO—your
FO can tell you more about this.Get current walk packets and maps from your FO.
How to Run a Successful Change CrewPre-Planning
Help create canvass packets for all volunteers These should include the walk list, a map of the area,
directions from the meeting locations to the canvass area, a script, canvass instructions, and voter registration forms
Ensuring that all canvassers have a way to get to their canvass location Some people may need to canvass nearby if they do not have
a car
Make sure to have clipboards, pens, and some water ready for canvassers
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a canvassTrain all canvassers before they start
Go over all the content of the canvass packetA couple things to remind people of:
Making sure all contacts they make are properly marked
NO literature can be left in mailboxes Explain how the code system works Have a quick discussion on what to say while
talking to people, recruiting volunteers, etc.
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a canvass
Collect cell phone numbers from all of the canvassers.
Set a time for the canvassers to come back and return their data.Have all canvass data returned on the same
day, having walk packets returned at a later date should be highly discouraged.
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a canvass
Arrange with your Field Organizer how data will be returned.
Quick turn around on getting data entered is very important—good data is essential for everything that we are doing in the state,
When you finish up your canvass, invite people back for another canvass.
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a phone bank
Talk to your field organizer about possible phone bank locationsMany phone banks can be run right out of the
office, but we will need additional locations as well.
Ideal phone banking locations are law firms, local businesses, or other locations with multiple land line. We also can run cell phone banks out of homes.
You know the people in your communities and what locations will work best
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a phone bank
Make sure there is somebody scheduled at all times to run the phone bank, this should usually be the Phone Bank captain One person should be responsible for the key to your
phone bank locationTalk to your FO about how you are calling
people from your phone bank Does the location have internet with computers we
can use? If yes, we can do an online phone bank If computers are not available, arrange for paper list
to be prepared for the phone bank
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a phone bank
Get call packets ready if calling off a paper list. These should include the calling list, a script, and calling instructions.
All volunteers must be trained before they start calling Talk to them about how a typical call should go, what
sort of information we are looking to obtain from the call, who it is that we are calling, and how to properly code each conversation.
Make sure that volunteers know what is going on in the area. If they talk to somebody on the phone who wants to volunteer, they should be able to plug them in.
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a phone bank
While volunteers are making calls, you should be available to answer any questions they have. Making the volunteers comfortable and happy will
get them back. When somebody is done, collect their call
sheets. If you arranged with your FO that you would enter
the data, make sure to do it that night. If you arranged that you would return the data
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a Voter Registration driveRegistering new voters will make or break
our chances for victory in North CarolinaThere was incredible success in
registering new voters for the primary, around 165,000 people were registered…there is still lots of work to do!
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a Voter Registration driveRules and Regulations for Voter Reg.
The deadline to register is October 10If you are 18 by November 4, you are
eligible to registerAll students who attend a NC college or
university can register at their campus address—this should be encourage!
How to Run a Successful Change Crew
Rules and Regulations for Voter Reg.If a person has been previously convicted of
a felony, they can register if they have fully completed both their parole and probation
If you have moved, you must re-register at your new address
Make sure the form is completely filled out! This includes all check boxes, birthday, address, and signature. It is not valid without all these.
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a Voter Registration drive
Work with your Field Organizer to determine an area in your turf where we need to register additional voters You know your town—let your FO know any ideas you
have for voter registration locations! We will work with you so that you are working
targeted turf. We will have lists of addresses where we believe there
are unregistered voters When working these lists, it will be very much like a
canvass, so you will have to make similar preparations
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a Voter Registration drive
Some places will require that we are non-partisan for voter registration. Talk with your Field Organizer about this—in many cases it is just best to remove your Obama gear, and keep getting new people registered.
Before sending out volunteers to do registration, they must be trained. Make sure everybody knows the rules on who is eligible to vote Stress the importance of making sure the form is filled
properly and completely We are collecting legally-binding documents, so it is very
important everything is done properly.
How to Run a Successful Change CrewRunning a Voter Registration drive
When you are done with your Voter Registration, make sure all forms get back to your Field Organizer. Your FO may work out a system with you where you
enter in the forms into an online data base.We will make sure that they are properly
recorded and turned in to the Board of Elections on time.
How to Run a Successful Change CrewExpanding your Change Crew
Recruiting and maintaining good volunteers is going to be very important for you to have a successful crew.
This will be important so we can increase our voter registration capabilities, increase the number of phone calls that we are making, and most importantly, have maximum volunteer capacity for our GOTV effort
The volunteers are the face of this campaign. Many people will not every have a chance to see Senator Obama, volunteers are how he can reach out to the county.
How to run a Successful Change CrewExpanding your Change Crew
You will work closely with your FO for a list of prospective volunteers which you can contact with volunteer opportunities.
These people should be called, and invited to join us Not everybody will be interested in canvassing and phone
banking, even though that is our biggest need. If they want to volunteer—we will find a way for them to help us.
Your FO will let you know how you will record new volunteers that have been successfully recruited.
People who have committed to volunteer with us should be confirmed the day before they are scheduled.
Data Entry 101Good data is essential for any successful
campaignWe will ask you to help us manage some of
this data, and make sure that it is entered correctly.
Good data will make our Get Out the Vote (GOTV) effort even more successful
Data Entry 101We enter all of our data into an online
database called Votebuilder. The address for this is www.votebuilder.com
Your Field Organizer will let you know on how you will log in to this system
Data Entry 101There are two sections of Votebuilder—they are
found on two tabs of the top of the screen:
The Voter File Every registered voter in the state, along with much of
their personal historyMy Campaign
This is our private campaign database of volunteers and new registrants.
Your field organizer will be able to let you know which tab you should be entering your data in.
Data Entry 101There are two different methods for data
entry1.Quick Look up
This should be using when entering in data for a single person
2.Grid View This should be used when entering data off a
printed list.
Data Entry 101Quick look up
When searching for a name, less is moreEntering too much information in the search page
(e.g., phone number) will result in duplicate entries.
When using quick look up in MyCampaign—If you find the person you are looking for, you will be able to edit all pertinent info.
If you cannot find a person while searching for them in MyCampaign, you can search the Voter file
by clicking:
Data Entry 101Adding a person to MyCampaign
You are looking to mark down a person as a new volunteer. How do you do it?
Do a Quick look up in MyCampaignIf there are no results, you can search the
Voter File by clicking:
Data Entry 101If the correct person appears, click on the
bubble next to their name. Then Click ‘Add Voter to My Campaign
If the correct person does not appear, click ‘Add New Person’
Data Entry 101Grid View
When you enter in Grid View, it will prompt you to enter a list number.
A unique number appears on the bottom of every walk and call list, this is the number you should enter.
Data Entry 101After entering the correct script, the data entry
screen will appear:
For any person not contacted, input corresponding reason into the “Result” drop-down box.
For those contacted, there will be drop-downs boxes & check-boxes, which will correspond to the script questions
Data Entry 101Grid View
Make sure to click Save often and before advancing to the next screen; there is no auto-save.
A quick tip for grid view: To advance to a specific person—find their My Campaign or Voter File ID# here:
Then enter their ID# here:
Data Entry 101Entering Voter Registration forms
We will also collect some data from voter registration forms which are collected
We will not use Votebuilder for this data entry, instead we will enter the info into a secure website http://my.barackobama.com/page/s/ncvoterreg
This information should be entered into the system within 24 hours of collection. Talk with your FO about exactly how they want voter registration processed.
Break out timeBreak out with your Field Organizers to go
more in depth about what we will be doing in your turf.
