Schools History and Numbers

Schools Tennis program concept was proposed to the USTA by Arthur Ashe in 1985. Presently 17,133 Teacher Accounts 1,534 School Class Registrations in 2019-2020 School year 1,134 unique schools registered There is an average of 700 students per school x 1,134=793,800 students introduced to tennis through physical education classes K-12 students make up 17% of the U.S. population-56 million

Suggested alternatives to tennis equipment:

Tennis balls: Socks, balloons, red felt or foam tennis balls

Beanbags: Socks or well-sealed bag stuffed with rice, smaller stuffed animals

Net: Rope tied to chairs, caution tape tied to chairs, pool noodles

Hitting targets: Paper plates, pieces of paper

Tennis racquet: Frying pan

Court lines: Sidewalk chalk, rope
