S• Two lines operated by ONTC covering

only of a small area of Muscat from Ruwi

to Wadi Adei and Wadi Kabir with more

than 100.000 passengers month (Jan2015).

• Lack of appropriate regulation, frequency

and quality of services.

• ONCT provides a great variety of bus

services, but urban bus services are only a

small proportion of ONTC activity.

• Contract services concentrate the core of

the ONTC activity.

1. Analysis & diagnostic of the current situation

8

ANALYSIS & DIAGNOSTIC OF THE CURRENT SITUATION

• Lack of uniformity in the design of bus stops for the different types of services, which create confusion.

• No signs on the road, neither vertical nor horizontal, so vehicles usually occupy areas reserved for bus stops.

• Inadequate pedestrian accessibility to bus stops.

• No pedestrian bridge communicating bus stops at both sides of the road.

• Lack of shaded and continuous pedestrian itineraries to bus stops.

• Lack of confortable and appealing sidewalks and itineraries.

Urban bus stops

9

ANALYSIS & DIAGNOSTIC OF THE CURRENT SITUATION

• Ruwi Bus Station is the main bus station, with 8 platforms, for ONTC urban, interurban and international bus services.

It provides shaded an sheltered spaces which may be potentially improved.

Has waiting areas and catering services inside the office building.

• Buruj Sahawa Area is used as a terminal for interurban and international bus services of ONTC and other private bus companies, as well as cargo services.

It does not provide passengers’ facilities.

Bus stations

Bus stations, properly conditioned, will constitute basic elements as centers of modal interchange in the future public transport system of Muscat

1. Analysis & diagnostic of the current situation

10

ANALYSIS & DIAGNOSTIC OF THE CURRENT SITUATION

• Taxis and microbuses play an important role in the mobility of Muscat in the current situation.

• Many different types of taxis (street taxis, microbuses and special taxis for the Airport, Hotels, etc.).

• Complex regulation of the taxi sector affecting different institutions (Municipality, ROP, MoTC).

• Lack of coordination between the different types of taxis.

• Low quality of taxis services due to the lack of taxi meters, adequate bus stops, telephone or online booking…

• Insufficient professionalization in the sector.

Taxis and microbus services

Areas for improvement

Further regulation and reorganization of the microbus and taxi sector.

Stronger enforcement in order to improve safety and quality of taxi services.

Enhance professionalism and establishment of a taxi management company

Public transport coordination with microbus and taxi services.

ANALYSIS & DIAGNOSTIC OF THE CURRENT SITUATION

• According to the Muscat Area Traffic Study of Muscat Municipality in the future

existing congestion will intensify along the Sultan Qaboos Street into Greater Muttrah, Seeb area and in the Ministries area; and

new areas will become congested around Mabailah, Muscat Express-way or 18th of November and Amrat.

• Car ownership has grown in recent years and will continue growing in the following years.

• Injuries and fatalities derived from traffic accidents really affects population.

ANALYSIS & DIAGNOSTIC OF THE CURRENT SITUATION

• In the Study of Design Requirements of Al-Batinah Railway (Oman´s Supreme Committee for Town Planning, 2010), two alternatives were considered.

Base case: with two stations located in the Muscat Municipality (Muscat and Al Misfah).

Case with extension to As Seeb International Airport (via Muscat Central Station): three alignment options were considered.

• In the Oman National Railway Project, in development, a rail extension to a Muscat Central Station is considered

Studies on the localization of the future Muscat Central Station should be undertaken to ensure its central location in a dense area with good connection to the future public transport system of Muscat

FUTURE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN MUSCAT

… will be an alternative to cars in terms of time, cost, quality and safety,

… will facilitate mobility for people with no car availability, students, etc,

… will help to reduce traffic associated problems,

… will not provide door to door service, since walking is always required,

… cannot cover 100% of the area of a city,

… cannot catch 100% of the population of a city,

… is a system that takes time to develop,

… requires a change in people’s attitudes, which takes time,

but the work to bring and enhance public transport is a task that never ends in any city.
