Introduction (1)

The measurements play a key role in modern IP networks, because: IP network becomes more and more complex

many domains administrated by autonomous operators different network technologies, like DiffServ, MPLS, xDSL,

WLAN, LAN, ... evolve towards multi-service networks able to provide

QoS (Quality of Service)

Provide knowledge about the network state useful for: Traffic control, e.g. Measurement based Admission Control Traffic engineering, e.g. provisioning Operation and Maintenance:

Fault detection Network anomaly detection

Therefore, development of effective Monitoring and Measurement System (MMS)

is a crucial part of a system design

What is EuQoS?

Research

QoS is provided by deployment of end-to-end Classes of Service (CoS), that support specific type of traffics with respect to their QoS requirements

Use measurements to support EuSoS system functions: CAC, TERO, OAM

Take a pragmatic approach

Architecture of EuQoS MMS (1)

The role of EuQoS MMS system is to provide tools for:

performing trials of EuQoS system supporting EuQoS systems functions (CAC, TERO) on-line monitoring of QoS level offered by EuQoS CoSs

(OAM)

The key elements of EuQoS MMS we deal with are: location of the measurement points inside a network design of measurement tools measurement control

Location of Measurement Points (MP)

Taking into account EuQoS network architecture All measurements are performed on the IP layer Measurement Points are placed in the points where

particular CoS (intra- or inter-domian) begins or ends to operate

MMS for supporting trials (1)

Objective: Validation the QoS level offered by EuQoS CoSs

Methodology: establish a test flow load the network by background

flows up to CAC limit in: Tested CoS Other CoSs

Measure QoS parameters: IPTD, IPDV, IPLR, throughput for the test flow

Tools: BTG: to load the network by aggregated traffic TrTG: to load the network by traffic reproduced from traces Netmeter: for measuring QoS parameters

MMS for supporting EuQoS system functions (1)

Objective: to support the performance of EuQOS system functions:

Call Admission Control (CAC) MMS provides information about available inter-domain routing

paths and the QoS level offered by them (gathered from EQ-BGP)

MMS provides information about instantaneous load on the inter-domain links used for measurement based admission control

Traffic Engineering and Resource Optimisation: MMS provides load carried inside each CoS used for network

provisioning

Operation & Mantainence On-line monitoring of QoS level (values of IPTD, IPDV, IPLR)

offered by CoSs

Exemplary deployment of MMS in WiFi

Problems with deployment of MMS tools Limited access to the routers In case of WiFi it is not possible to use aggregate models of

background traffic as the number of terminals influence results
