web developer for over a DECADE
Worked for Microsoft, government and a few startups.
Saw a need in philanthropy, so I quit my job, moved to New York from San Diego, and have began to meet with NGOs to make this happen.
TED curator, Chris Anderson, called the project "Inspiring"

First...
We need a standard way to talk about the amazing projects in the field
Example: what Apple did with the AppStore for the iPhone
define a standard and let others build apps at no cost to you
![Page 12: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Already a community effort to develop this standard
Based on RSS (which is used by news/blogs)
called: ProjectRSS
projectrss.org
open philanthropy is here
![Page 13: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
so how does the action map fit?
![Page 14: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
a web application designed with donor engagement in mind
Project Goals:
• No proprietary formats. Do what's best for philanthropy.
• Strengthen relationships between an organization and its donors
• Let donors visualize projects through media and people
• Let donors connect with each other to take action with your cause
• Export data to Google Earth, RSS readers and analytical tools easily
![Page 15: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
and how might one use it?
![Page 16: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Scenario #1:
Current donor wants tostay informed (engaged)
![Page 17: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Scenario #1:
I frequently donate to charity:water and enjoy receiving updates when a new well is built in Africa. This automatically comes to me via their project feed.
And every update builds upon my relationship with the organization. This engagement leads me to donate
again.
![Page 18: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
I notice a new well in charity:water's project feed.
I click to view more details. I can read the story, engage, and donate directly with the org.
![Page 19: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Scenario #2:
Prospective donor looking to engage (donate)
based on cause
(you hope they find you, but how?)
![Page 20: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Scenario #2:
I have never donated before because it is so hard to assess a "good" organization. I am looking for an org that
has a track record of success and projects I can track.
I start looking at "Health" causes and find an organization, Lend4Health. They facilitate loans for the biomedical
treatment of children and adults with autism disorders.
![Page 21: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
I start browsing the projects, or micro-loans in this case.
I click to view individuals' stories and find one that particularly resonates with me. I just found a great org that is transparent!
![Page 22: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Scenario #3:
Born in Kenya and now reside in UK. Would like to give
back to my homeland.
![Page 23: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
I start browsing organizations working on the ground in Kenya, where I'm from.
Instead of searching through mission statements, I am looking at real projects on the ground.
I learn of 3 great orgs this way and reach out to all 3 of them to see how I may be of help.
![Page 24: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Scenario #4:
One org leveraging expertise of another org in different region.
Beneficial for all!(one gets knowledge, the other gets karma in community)
![Page 25: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Scenario #4:
* remember *
increase the pie, not the piece
It's about working with others. People want to see organizations they care about help each other.
![Page 26: Overview | My Action Map](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062709/5591a78c1a28abd9098b47bf/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Scenario #4:
I started my own non profit with a goal of building water wells in the DRC (Africa) where my Father was born. However, I don't have much experience in this area.
I reach out to a charity I found while searching the action map that has built several wells in nearby regions. I get in touch with them to see if I can learn from their experience.
