NJ DLM Basic Information
Students with the most significant cognitive
disabilities are the only students eligible to take the
NJ Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) alternate
assessment.
◦ IEPs teams must use the NJ DLM Participation
Criteria Guidelines to make this determination.
Student in grades 3 - 8 and grade 11 participate in the
English language arts and math assessments.
Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 participate in the science
assessment.
Test administration occurs between April 4 to June 1, 2018.
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 4
NJ DLM Basic Information
NJ uses the DLM Year-End (YE) model which is a
computer-based assessment based on the NJSLS and DLM
Essential Elements (EEs).
Grade specific test specifications (blueprints on skills that
are tested) are available.
Use the links to the Educator Resource pages to obtain
information on the test specifications.

Under the Manuals and Blueprints arrow you can
access the ELA, math, and science blueprints:
DLM Computer Based Testing• The assessment is a computer adaptive assessment.
The process is:
• The teacher completes the student’s First Contact Survey indicating current level of demonstrated skill level, etc. These answers help the system pick the first set of test items.
• A student takes a small set of items, called a testlet, then the system takes into account the level of difficulty of the test items and the students performance (correct or incorrect answers).
• Based on the student’s performance another testlet is selected, which contain items that are around the same level, somewhat easier, or somewhat harder than the last testlet (same, lower, or higher level skills are selected).
• This is an iterative process until the testlets address all Essential Elements in the YE test blueprint.
• The number of testlets vary based on grade and content area tested.
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 7
DLM Computer Based Testing
• A small percentage of students will be assessed outside the
system via DLM Teacher Administered tests. The student will
not view the computer screen as the teachers will
administer the questions based on his/her view of the
testlets on the computer.
• When this occurs a teacher will be asked to gather objects to
use during the test.
• A student may sometimes have a teacher administered testlet,
then sometimes not, based on the adaptive nature of the test
and modifications to the level of testlet assigned to the student.
• Information on teacher administered testlets is found in the
DLM Test Administrator’s Manual.

Are You a “New” or “Returning”
Test Administrator for 2017-2018?
In 2016-2017, if you
passed all DLM modules AND received a certificate you are a Returning Test Administrator.
In most cases Returning Test Administrators tested students with the DLM last year.
However if you were designated as a back-up Test Administrator, passed the modules/received certificates, but did not administer DLM, you are still considered a Returning Test Administrator in Moodle.

Are You a “New” or “Returning”
Test Administrator for 2017-2018?
In 2016-2017, if you
Did not pass the DLM modules OR
If you were not involved with NJ DLM
assessments last year,
Then you are listed as a New Test
Administrator in Moodle.
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 17
Administered DLM Last Year but
Changed School Districts?
If you are working in a different district
than you were last year, and
◦ In 2016-2017 you passed the module post
tests and received certificates, then
◦ you will be listed in Moodle as a New Test
Administrator but this can be revised.
Show the Moodle certificates to your Assessment
Coordinator and ask that they email Elizabeth
Celentano and DLM Support to request we change
you in the system to a Returning Test Administrator.

Download DLM’s training manual (title below) for important information on logging into Moodle, resetting passwords, post tests, facilitated versus self-directed training, etc.
DLM Required Training for Returning Test
Administrators
In Moodle, the DLM required training is one
module titled:
Returning Test Administrator Training – Review of the
DLM Alternate Assessment System.
This module is approximately 45 minutes.
After viewing the module the teacher must
independently complete a four-part post test.
◦ If you score below 80% accurate the DLM system will provide
and require additional training and post-tests.
◦ You may review the module and take the post-tests as many
times as necessary in order to achieve 80% or higher.
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 20
DLM Required Training for New Test
Administrators
In Moodle, the DLM required training is four modules.◦ Part 1 – About the DLM System
◦ Part 2 – Understanding and Delivering Testlets
◦ Part 3 – Test Administration and Scoring
◦ Part 4 – Preparing to Administer the Assessment
These modules are approximately 2.5 hours.
After viewing each module the teacher must independently complete a post test.
◦ If you score below 80% accurate on any post test, you must review the training materials again and retake the post test(s).
You may take the tests as many times as necessary in order to achieve 80% or higher..
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 21
Assessment Coordinator Scheduled Training
◦ Assessment Coordinators may train everyone as
one group (Returning and New Test
Administrators) using all four modules. After
which you must
independently and separately login in to Moodle
click on Facilitated training (which in essence tells
the system you don’t need to view the modules as
someone else showed them to you)
then take your assigned post test(s)
one or four depending on your status
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 24
Assessment Coordinator Scheduled Training
◦ Assessment Coordinators may choose to split the
group into a Returning Test Administrators group and
a New Test Administrators group for training. After
which you must
independently and separately login in to Moodle
click on Facilitated training (which in essence tells the
system you don’t need to view the modules as
someone else showed them to you)
then take your assigned post test(s).
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 25
Separate Teacher Training
Your Assessment Coordinator may also choose
to assign a time during school hours for you to
separately view the module(s) and take the post
test(s).
If so then you need to login into Moodle,
select Self-Directed training,
view the module(s),
then take the post test(s).
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 26
Special Note
When taking the DLM Moodle post tests, know that a correct answer related to who loads the KITE program onto your computers is different in NJ than the answer on the test.
◦ In NJ only Technology Representatives load the KITE system onto your computers.
◦ However in the DLM Moodle post-test please mark the answer worded similar to “it is the teacher’s responsibility to load KITE onto the computer devices”.

Instructional Program Preparation
Teachers and school program staff must review the
Essential Elements (EEs) and implement
individualized instruction related to the EEs.
◦ The Essential Elements are skill statements written to
reflect the NJSLS at an appropriate linkage level for
students with significant cognitive disabilities. EEs and
nodes (specific skills) are important to review and
address during instruction.
◦ Note that ELA and math have five linkage levels, while
science currently has only three linkage levels.
More details are presented in upcoming slides.
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 32
Use of the Test Information
Use of the Essential Elements, nodes (skill statements
related to the map), and the YE test blueprint will guide
instruction, assist in selecting individualized targeted
skills related to the CCSS, and help prepare students for
the NJ DLM assessment.
School program staff and district curriculum specialists
should assist in the development of instructional plans
based on the DLM YE test blueprints.
The test blueprints differentiate the skills that are
tested in the Year-End model from the overarching set of
skills for instruction.
DLM also provides Professional Development (PD)
modules that are designed to teach conceptual areas
related to NJSLS and the DLM EEs.

Professional Development
DLM professional development (PD) modules developed by the
University of North Carolina (UNC) support the design and
delivery of this instruction.
These modules are different from the required DLM training
modules, are highly recommended, and are optional.
The PD modules on topics related to math, writing, reading, and
science instruction provide information that is useful for
classrooms and school programs.
Topics are broad and include information about alternate pencils
(writing topic), algebraic thinking, predictable chart writing, place
value, etc.
Viewing the PD modules is encouraged and topic selection is based
on a teacher’s interest in specific areas.
Modules can be accessed through DLM Claim or Alphabetically.

Accessibility Supports
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 63
You must review the 2017 - 2018 Accessibility Manual for important information regarding completing the AP survey and administering the DLM. Included in the manual is:
•Six Steps to Customize DLM Accessibility Supports for Students
•Step 1: Include Eligible Students in the DLM Alternate Assessment.
•Step 2: Learn About the Accessibility Supports and what the DLM Alternate Assessment provides.
•Step 3: Discuss and Select appropriate Supports: Considerations for IEP Teams
•Step 4: Selecting and viewing supports in the KITE System
•Step 5: Prepare for the Assessment: Using the Chosen Accessibility Supports
•Step 6: Evaluate the Accessibility Supports Used After the Assessment
Practice Testlet Information
Practice testlets are available on the DLM KITE system and should be administered to the students prior to April 2018 testing.
Practice testlets relate to some accessibility features the student may use. Select the practice testlets (“demos”) based on the AP features.
The purpose of using the practice items are to◦ give the student experience with the online test
experience prior to answering live test questions. This allows the student and teacher to be aware of the
computer features, and helps to determine whether the student or teacher would “drive” (use the computer mouse) during testing.
65•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017
Practice Testlets
Refer to the Test Administration manual along with the Guide to Practice Activities & Released Testlets Year-End model for information on accessing practice testlets.
Practice testlets login ID always start with “demo” for the login info.
Personalized practice testlets are not available in the DLM system. The practice test button seen on screen after logging in to a student’s account does not function.
DO NOT use the student’s login ID and password when looking for practice tests!
•NJ DLM Teacher Training October 2017 66
Engaging the Students
DLM engagement activities are present in the testlets.
The engagement activities do not require a student response to a DLM test question.
The test administrator will engage the student in the activity and may ask factual questionsbut not lead them to answers.
The activities are meant to give the student a context for the questions, taps and activates prior knowledge and experience, and/or
introduces the concept(s) to be addressed.
