4-H Objective

To assist teachers in helping student achieve required benchmarks that are assessed by the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test and the Florida Wrights.

History

1952 Mrs. Inez Pettigrew, a teacher at Palm View Elementary in Palmetto, Florida started public speaking program

1969 Tropicana adopted the program in association with local 4-H organizations

The program is coordinated and underwritten by Tropicana, a division of PEPSICO and administered through the 4-H Youth Development Program, Extension Service of the University of Florida.

Student Objectives

– Recognize the necessity of obtaining as much information as possible on a given topic

– Carefully organize the materials to be presented in a timely and orderly speech

– Develop a pleasing personal style before an audience

– Acquire the ability to speak convincingly in public and to express ideas effectively

– Develop confidence and poise

Teacher Responsibilities

• Help students create, write and present speeches

• Choose the classroom winner to perform in the school competition

• Select the school winner for the county competition.

• Prepare the school winner for the county competition

Evaluation Results Sample

• In all six skills sets, pre and post measures indicate a statistically significant improvement

• Prior to being involved in the Tropicana curriculum, the strongest skill in youth was the ability to make a presentation (2.67) while the least developed skill was to be more self-confident (2.22).

• Post-test measures indicate that the ability to stand in front of a group had the greatest level of improvement and was the highest rated skill overall

• Post-test measurements, self-confidence was still the lowest rated skill.
