BSO Board of Directors2006-2007 Season

I am truly delighted to join the

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as its

new President and CEO. My family and

I moved from Seattle to Baltimore in

October, and already we’ve come to

appreciate the welcoming spirit of this

community. We are looking forward to

exploring the city, the surrounding areas

and the richness of culture they have to offer.

One of the cultural treasures of our city and state is the Baltimore

Symphony Orchestra. I am particularly excited to be part of the

Orchestra at this point in its history when Maestra Marin Alsop is tak-

ing the podium as the next Music Director. She is poised to lead the

BSO in new artistic directions that I know will delight our audiences at

home and garner national and international attention.

My family and I are also looking forward to the BSO Holiday

Spectacular, Baltimore’s newest and most extravagant holiday tradition.

It created quite a buzz in its debut season last year and is sure to become

Baltimore’s favorite holiday entertainment for years to come. Under the

artistic direction of Jack Everly, the BSO’s Principal Pops Conductor, the

Meyerhoff has been transformed into a winter wonderland, and the per-

formances are guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to this season’s BSO Holiday

Spectacular.

Happy Holidays!

Page 7: Overture December 2006

Some people take a cue from the departmentstores and kick off their holiday planning atHalloween. Others revel in the last-minute frenzyof mid-December. Then there’s Jack Everly,Artistic Director and Conductor for the HolidaySpectacular and BSO Principal Pops Conductor.Last December, as the curtain fell on OpeningNight of the inaugural Holiday Spectacular, heenjoyed the applause, congratulated the cast, and then immediately began planning for the2006 production. In winter and early spring, as visions of

sugarplums dance in Everly’s head—along withmusical accompaniment, staging, and costumingideas—he gathers his artistic team from amongthe country’s most talented theatrical veterans.

Director David Levy has written anddirected numerous national theatricaland symphonic pops productionsincluding A Salute to 100 Years forBroadway Cares. Scenic designerGregory Hill, CenterStage’s cos-tume designer David Burdick, and choreographer JenniferLadner each add their artisticexpertise, and the BSO’s ownDori Armor—the HolidaySpectacular executive pro-ducer—coordinates all thepieces and players.By early summer, the team

begins designing and producingthe show. No detail is over-looked—from the period costumes

in this year’s new production num-ber, the nostalgic 1940s Christmas

“Radio Broadcast,” to the eggnog and

cookies in the lobby. Auditions for the chorusand principal dancers are held in the fall. Afterrehearsing as separate groups throughout the fall, the full cast comes together on December 7 for aweek of all-day rehearsals in the Meyerhoff lead-ing up to Opening Night.

“’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” “Carolof the Bells,” and the kick line of tap-dancingSantas were so well-received in 2005 that theyare back for a reprise, but everything else is new. This year’s host, Grammy Award winner SandiPatty, lends her golden voice and unforgettablestage presence, while “Piano Juggler” DanMenendez adds the laughs.

“Changing the show each season makes it anew and exciting experience for our audiences,”says Everly. It’s a collective commitment that makes a sin-

gular statement. “Our Holiday Spectacular isunique in that all of the audience’s holidayfavorites are performed not only by dancers andsingers, but by an entire symphony orchestra,”says Everly. “It is thrilling for me to experiencethe Meyerhoff filled with children and adultsenjoying the magical music of the season as onlya cast of 64, plus our own Baltimore SymphonyOrchestra, can perform it.”

Setting the MoodThis past summer, production designer GregoryHill sat in a meeting, listening to ideas for thelook of the show. Sketches of a collage of nostal-gic holiday images and a snowy Baltimorestreetscape were debated. Then he rememberedthe photograph. A self-described pack rat, Hillhas a vast collection of design images that he usesfor inspiration. Included in the stash is a photo

of Christmas ornaments that he shot more than adecade ago. “I used to love taking close-up photos of decorated Christmas trees so the ornaments become huge and you really see allthe reflected light and colors. Then I had an ideato take a photo of a mass of ornaments by them-selves,” says Hill. “I’ve always wanted to use itsome way and this just clicked.” The shimmering metallics of his photograph

have been reproduced digitally—and dramatical-ly—on a curtain by i.weiss, a New York Citycompany that creates curtains for Broadwayshows. It’s one of four curtains (including onethat’s computer-controlled) Hill has designed tohighlight the proscenium or “portal” that createsa frame for the typically open Meyerhoff stage. “Iknew enough from working with Jack and Davidbefore to get the taste level and feel they wanted,”he says. “What I didn’t know was the space. I wasincredibly impressed with the Meyerhoff but wasn’tsure how we were going to turn it into a prosce-nium stage. Our goal was to create a picture thatdidn’t have anything to do with the hall’s wood andspare lines, and create something lush and lavish.” A veteran of film, theater, and television work,

Hill is no stranger to designing unforgettablemoods. He has worked as art director on TV’sLaw & Order shows and as assistant art directoron the 2006 film, The Devil Wears Prada. But forHill, designing holiday-themed stage productionsis a welcome distraction: “Working on a film canbe a corporate feeling. Doing theater is much morefun and hands-on. With a holiday show, you canlet your imagination go wild. Your design is notgrounded in reality—it’s all fantasy and fun.” Carrying out his one-of-a-kind artistic vision

falls to Annie Applegarth, the BSO’s Director of

Operations and the Holiday Spectacular’s produc-tion manager. Her job is to search out the crafts-people that will bring Hill’s designs to life, and asa Baltimore native, she likes to keep it local. SinceSeptember, craftspeople at the BaltimoreOpera Company’s shop have beenconstructing most of the setsand props. “We could havesent it out to shops inNew York or New Jerseythat build sets forBroadway, but wewanted to keeppeople working inBaltimore,” saysApplegarth. “TheOpera shop has a talented stagecrew, so we optedto have them buildthe risers and setpieces.” The scopeof her work and itsscale keeps thingsinteresting. For example, the 40-foot Nutcrackersflanking the main curtainwere created by a local sculptorwho sprayed Styrofoam around ageneral shape, then carved and paintedthe details of the iconic holiday image. In late November, Applegarth’s five-person

stage management staff and 28 stage crew mem-bers go into overdrive, working three daysstraight in rolling shifts to erect the set. Rehearsalsand performances are just as grueling, withnumerous set and costume changes and lighting

cues for 177 conventional (non-moving) fixturesand 37 moving light fixtures. It’s the largest pro-duction the BSO will undertake during theentire concert season, but Applegarth is quick topoint out that it’s a lot of fun and hugely satisfy-ing. “Our crew is very excited,” she says. “Wehave a great time doing this. With the HolidaySpectacular, we’re creating a tradition forBaltimore—something that will outlive us andthat our children can enjoy with their children.”

Lending a VoiceAt 17, Steffan Carter is the youngest member ofthe Holiday Spectacular’s 24-member professionalchorus, drawn from Baltimore, New York, andWashington, D.C. Don’t mistake his age for inex-perience, though. Audiences around Baltimorehave been enjoying the rich timbre of hisbass/baritone for years. A member of the BethelAME Church choir since age 3, Carter sang pro-fessionally with the Baltimore Opera Vivente infall 2005 while a senior at the Baltimore Schoolfor the Arts. Today he studies voice at the

Peabody Institute on a full scholarship. This marks his second year with theshow, having performed last year aspart of the chorus along withother students from the BSAchorus. On the bill was “GoTell It On the Mountain,”a gospel favorite thatCarter had performedoften at his church. When the teen audi-tioned for the piece’ssolo, says the BSO’sArmor, “We knewright away that

Steffan was it. He’s incredibly poised for his ageand has a great presence,” she says. “His solostopped the show every performance.”

For Carter, the opportunity meant muchmore than the chance to sing alone on a well-known stage. “In the lobby after the show, younger people asked for my autograph, and Irealized that I was a role model,” he says. “That’smy dream, to be a role model to young peoplewho have been told that they can’t succeed andto show them that you can be all you can bewith what you’ve been given.”This September, busy with vocal classes at

Peabody, he hadn’t heard anything about the2006 auditions. “The day before the auditions,Mr. Cantrell [Carter’s vocal coach at Peabody]called me. He said just to sing what you know, soI sang ‘The Vagabond’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams,a very dramatic, very low piece. When the callcame two weeks later, I was extremely excited.”Prior to full-cast rehearsals, the chorus

rehearses on average 150 hours. This year, tradi-tional, seasonal favorites such as “Angels We HaveHeard on High” and “Carol of the Bells” mixwith newer selections like “Seasons of Love,” thesoul-stirring anthem from the hit musical andfilm Rent.

Moving the Holiday SpiritThe early October skies outside the dance studiowere gray and dreary, a sharp contrast to thevibrant energy of the dozens of high school students being put through their paces byJennifer Ladner, choreographer for the HolidaySpectacular. Pointe shoes, tap shoes, ballet shoes, and leg warmers littered the edges of the studio, while taped music from the show filled theroom. From the ranks of the talented sopho-

mores, jun-iors and sen-iors carefullyfollowing herevery step,Ladner and

Norma Pera, theBaltimore School for

the Art’s Director of Dance, cast 28 students to serve as the principal dancersfor the show. While a few professional chorusmembers do some movement,it is the students who providethe dancing expertise for theSpectacular.Ladner, an alumna of the

Arizona Ballet Theatre, DanceKaleidoscope, and theGregory Hancock DanceTheatre, arrives in town forthe three-day audition inOctober with choreographywell in hand. “David Levy has a specific idea inmind [for the dances],” she explains. “We go intothe studio together and banter back and forth tocreate the steps.” Dance numbers include ballet, tap, a Latin dance party, and what Ladner calls a“Will Rogers Follies-type of dance.” After auditions are over, she returns to

Baltimore in November and again for the full-castrehearsals to “tweak and refine things and reallyget that Rockette-quality and extra sparkle,” shesays. Pera is responsible for re-staging and rehears-ing the show’s ballet number, “Carol of the Bells.”Last year, the BSO commissioned BSA alumnusKeith Thomas, a member of the Towson Universitydance faculty, to choreograph the dance.Leading up to December, the students work

with Pera and her BSA colleagues to rehearse thedances at the school for sequence and style—all while rehearsing for the BSA’s full-scaleNutcracker performances and aNovember BSO family concert, attend-ing classes, and doing homework. When they join the BSO on theMeyerhoff stage, they’re performance-ready. “The level of professionalism andtalent in this school is so very impres-sive,” notes Ladner. “Norma and her staff

give these students suchwonderful training andguidance. The students are sofortunate to work with a sym-phony orchestra and profession-al chorus. Students in othercities don’t always get anywherenear this experience.” The BSA’s Pera heartily

agrees: “Our students know it’sa real honor to perform with

the BSO. They learn how to do dramatic stagemovements, work with a dresser, stage managerand lighting director. For me as a teacher, it’simportant that they learn to be as versatile aspossible and that their horizons be as expanded asthey can be. An artist can only give back whatthey know.”For Ladner, a 15-year veteran of yuletide pro-

grams around the country, the satisfaction comesfrom watching a city embrace the production.“Something magical happens when a show likethis is performed,” she says. “You’re never surewith the first year how it will turn out untilOpening Night. It’s a heartwarming show, andBaltimore is such a warm, embracing city, so it’sthe perfect combination.”

16 Overture

Q. You’ve been recording Christmasalbums for a couple of decades now. Is Christmas your favorite holiday?A. I do love Christmas so much. I love what it means. People are just a little kinder atChristmas. Everybody slows their world downjust a little bit. It truly is my favorite time of the year.

Q. So about what time does the Christmasspirit kick in for you—Thanksgiving?Halloween?A. Actually, it’s Labor Day. What we’re doingthis year is, after Halloween, we’re going to putour Christmas tree up. We’re going to get it upearly because usually Christmas is such a busytime. If we wait until after Thanksgiving, we’rethrowing tinsel on the tree on about the 24th.So we thought this year, let’s put the tree upwhen it’s not as crazy, then we can enjoy it fora while.

Q. You have a blended family, and yourbook is called Life in the Blender. What’syour secret to finding balance?A. I don’t know that there’s any secret, butyou’ve got to have a sense a humor. And noteverything is a battle. When you have eightkids, their personal integrity and their charac-ter—those kinds of things are the battle zones, and not so much if their hair is red today andblond tomorrow. Those kinds of things we canlet go.

Q. So how do you throw a holiday into allof that? A.We all enjoy being together so much. That’sone of the things we look forward to—that inthe hustle and bustle of this crazy life, we lookforward to a lot of great family time at theChristmas holiday.

Q. Do you have a favorite Christmas song?A. I suppose “O, Holy Night” ranks up there asone of my favorites. I remember as a girl thatmy dad sang that. He has a beautiful tenorvoice, and he was the music director at ourchurch for all my growing up years. And I justloved hearing him sing that song. So when Igot old enough and made my first Christmasrecord, I most definitely wanted to put that on there.

Sandi PattyIn her 25-year career, acclaimed vocalist Sandi Patty has released24 albums, won numerous Grammy and Dove awards, and beeninducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Author of Life in theBlender, a book about balancing work and family, Patty has a“blended” family herself—she and her husband have eight kidsbetween them! Host of this year’s Holiday Spectacular, Patty letus in on why she loves Christmas so much.

Q. Do you have favorite holiday record-ings by other musicians?A. I absolutely love Karen Carpenter. Myfavorite is a CD from a Christian group calledAvalon, and it is just absolutely fantastic. I lovethat one. We listen to Mannheim Steamroller. And Kenny G has a beautiful CD.

Q. The Holiday Spectacular sounds likequite a show.A. It is going to be a magnificent show. JackEverly, who is the conductor, is a dear friend,a fantastic musician, and a wonderful conduc-tor. We truly have a great, great time. Theevening is going to be packed full of holidayfavorites and fun moments. We do “JingleBells” but visit it with a lot of different musi-cal styles. There’s dancing, and you have allthose tapping Santas. It’s just fantastic.

Q. It must take a lot of preparation tobring all of that together.A. It definitely rivals what happens onBroadway around the holidays. To have thatkind of excellence, it does take a lot ofrehearsal, a lot of practice, a lot of preparation.Jack just has a magical way of pulling it alltogether.

Q. At what point does it go from workto fun? A.You know what? It’s always fun. Even thework is fun.

EVERY CHRISTMAS SEASON, a group of BSO musiciansheads to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center to spread a little holiday cheer. In a tradition that dates back to the

1980s, about eight to 12 players—usually some brass, somestrings, and some woodwinds—tromp around the wards in smallgroups playing carols for the kids. It’s not exactly silent night. First, there’s the entourage—it

takes help from symphony and hospital staff to get the players, their instruments, and their stands around the hospital. “It’s one of the funniest scenes to watch [us trying] to catch the elevators”with all that stuff, says trombonist Christopher Dudley. Thenthere’s the music. The players take requests, so—kids being kids—they play a lot of “Jingle Bells,” “Frosty the Snowman,” and

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” throughout the hospitalhallways. Of course, nobody complains about the noise. Hospital

staff get into the spirit, as do many of the parents. But mostimportantly, the kids love it. “Music is such a beautiful thing,” says violinist Greg Mulligan. “It’s our contribution to make some-body’s life a little happier for a few minutes. It feels really great.” If a child is particularly sick, parents will often invite the

musicians into the room for a quiet, private song—“Silent Night”or “The First Noel.” Playing for sick children can be emotionallychallenging, says Dudley. But it’s worth it. “It’s moving to seethese kids and how courageous they are,” he says.
