OVERCOMING WRITER’S BLOCK AT
WORK
Tips, suggestions, and inspiration from GennGlobal
INTRODUCTION
Writer’s block is a problem that can be very difficult
to overcome. It can debilitate even the best writers,
and it happens to all writers at some point in their
process.
However, it is absolutely possible to overcome
writer’s block and get back to your writing.
Next, we will talk about writer’s block and how you
can easily overcome it in the workplace.
TAKE A CREATIVE BREAK
If you have a creative project you could work on
instead, try focusing on that. If not, do some
brainstorming, thinking, or free writing.
The point of this exercise isn’t necessarily to get
other things done, but rather to keep the creative
part of your brain going while you take a break from
writing.
Once you get back to it, you should find that writing
comes easily to you.
And speaking of free writing…
FREE WRITE
Free writing can help you overcome writer’s block in
a simple yet aggressive way. By continuing to write
(and write and write), regardless of the quality of
your words, you can once again find your writing
groove.
Writing in a stream of consciousness style is an
effective method because it makes it easier for
words to go from your brain to the screen or page
instantaneously.
Once you get your thoughts free flowing, get back
to your regularly scheduled writing.
GET UP AND MOVE!
Because your writer’s block might be caused from
sitting still for too long, taking a break to get up and
move around can help you refocus on your writing
task.
Going outside is another great option because
natural sunlight provides your body with precious
melatonin. Also, physically separating yourself from
your work will allow for a much needed break.
Once you feel refreshed, get back to writing with a
clear head.
ELIMINATE ANY DISTRACTIONS
There are innumerable things that can distract you
from writing, and therefore lead to writer’s block.
One way to help combat this distraction is by
installing an app that isolates your writing space
(such as a word processing program), making it
easier to focus.
There are also apps that can make it impossible to
reach social media websites, removing the
possibility of being distracted by them during certain
hours.
ADJUST YOUR WRITING HABITS AND
SCHEDULE
If you can, try writing early in the morning, or in the evening if that works better for you. You can still practice all of the things at work that can help you to overcome writer’s block.
For example, you can warm-up your writing abilities before you start on something important—free writing is the perfect activity for achieving this.
Obviously, adjusting your schedule depends on what kind of writing you are doing, and isn’t possible for everyone. However, finding the optimal time of day to write will be beneficial to you in the long run.
