1 WET AND DRY COUNTIES 1 mIOthl Editor Ocala Banner- I wish to give a few more facts in Teply to some of the late wet pieces I in the Ocala papers In your issue of- F November 18th you say that Talla- hassee Live Oak Lake City and r Gainesville are no more prosperous > than Ocala t It is not the claim of prohibition t speakers that carrying the town dry 1 will boom it financially but it is our claim that it will not hurt it inany t > way and we point to these places and I show you that they are more pros- perous j than when they were wet 11 simply to prove that they have not been killed by prohibition As an- cOther proof we have testimony from majority of the leading business- men from each of the towns referred to t certifying that their businesses re letter than when the town was Wet I do not know whether you call an increase in business prosperity or- Wil1yoU ot tell me why you do not- heve the statements of so many of beat men in these towns imething else might have made Jp f k ¬ day she has 6569 a gain of 2426 Live I Oak five years ago had a population of 1669 today she has over 5000 an i increase of over 3000 Gainesville five years ago had a population of 4633 today she has 5500 Ocala five years ago had a I population of 3380 I have not seen the census report for Ocala but I ask ¬ ed the census enumerator R W Er ¬ vin just after he had taken three I wards and would it run to 5000 and I he said it would not go over 4500 if that t Tallahassee has not been dry but a I I little overa half a year She has i made about the same growth as Oca- la j I do not know whether you call Ii increasing in population prosperity- or not but these increases certainly show that prohibition has not hurt the towns Some one who signs his himself HAn Old Timer whom I suppose is the same as Apex and the other i nom de plumes refers us to Vermont i Maine and Kansas Prohibition in l I these states has proven most success ¬ ful The wets tell us it is a failure and the drys tell us it is a success but the people in these states laugh I at our ignorance and say that we who have experienced it are satisfied I and are keeping it The wets say that Vermont after- a long time went back to a licensed state but they dont tell us that after one years trial under license and lo ¬ cal option it went bacK almost to a prohibition state and today 65 out I of 75 municipalities have prohibition- and all the counties except three V D CARS To the Dry Voters of the County- We wish to call your attention to the fact that it is very important- that you go to the polls and cast your vote for a dry county Clay county went wet by only three votes Four more votes for the drys would have changed the result We expect Dunn ¬ ellon to go a large majority wet and the other precincts must
