Installation Guidelines
High Temperature Aluminum Conductors Type ACSS & ACSS/TW
In general , ACSS & ACSS/TW conductors can be installed adopting the same method of
installation as that of ACSR . However because of the special characteristics of this type of
conductors , the following additional precautions are recommended during installation.
1. ACSS & ACSS/TW conductors are not to be dragged across bare ground or other hard
surfaces to prevent surface scratches/scuffing because the conductor is made up of
fully annealed aluminum strands in the outer layers.
2. The conductors are to be installed only by Tension Stringing methods. Conductor pay-
offs are to be put in line with bullwheel tensioner to avoid scuffing of conductor
surface against adjacent layers in the reel.
3. Tensioner wheels having a diameter at least 35 times the conductor diameter at the
bottom of the grooves are recommended to be used. Multi groove tensioners with
lined groove s are recommended. Usage of single V-groove tensioner may be avoided
as it can cause damage the conductor .
4. To facilitate pulling of the conductor , a washer and compressed steel sleeve shall be
attached to the leading end of the conductor. The aluminum strands are to be cut to a
length approximate to that of the steel sleeve from the end of the conductor.
Thereafter inserted a washer on the exposed steel core to press against the cut ends
of the aluminum strands. The washer outsider diameter should be equal to the
conductor diameter. Thereafter steel sleeve shall be compressed over the steel core.
5. Kellems grips should be properly sized to the conductor dimensions and must be
double banded on the open end. The bands are to be covered with tapes to prevent
damage to sheaves.
6. All come-alongs and grips shall be designed and tested for the size and type of the
conductor being installed. Come-alongs should be clean and well lubricated . The bolts
should be snugged- up and tightened with repetitive passes applying the full torque
recommended by the manufacturer.

7. Open sided parallel jaw grips should be of size close to the conductor to minimize the
distortion in strands. Usage of grips designed for multiple range/ size of conductors
are to be avoided.
8. It may be necessary to use tandem grips or core gripping methods for certain high-
tension applications.
9. The installation of the conductor is to be carried out strictly in accordance with
Specification IEEE-524-2003 “IEEE Guide to the Installation of Overhead Transmission
line conductors” unless otherwise specified.
