Eight Ways To Avoid Card Fraud1. Buy Only from Reputable Retailers. While counterfeit goods are often hard to spot, they are common out in the marketplace – especially online. Many items sold by unknown merchants turn out to be counterfeit or resold stolen goods. Consumers should exercise caution when merchandise is priced well below the going commercial rate.

2. Take Extra Steps to Secure Online Purchases. While EMV chips safeguard card data at the point of sale, they don’t protect e-commerce sales. You should consider using alternative payment methods that are safer to use online and via mobile devices, such as prepaid debit cards, Visa Checkout, Masterpass, and tokenized payment options like Apple Pay.

3. Secure PCs and Mobile Devices. One of the most problematic security threats to holiday shoppers is located right in your home: the personal computer. You may be shopping from laptops, PCs and mobile devices infected with viruses and malware that give cybercriminals direct access to your personal and account data. Be sure to install quality virus and anti-malware scanning software on all computing devices to keep data secure.

4. Beware of Instant Savings Discounts. Consumers are often barraged with quick credit offers that can lead to ancillary identify theft. Pay close attention to how your information is being collected if you are asked to open a credit account in exchange for a discount. You should avoid verbally providing information to sales people, and should use caution as well when filling out paper forms that can easily be pocketed by retail personnel after you have left the premises.

5. Don’t Trust Those “Knuckle Busters.” Old-fashioned imprint machines that produce a carbon copy of payment cards still exist in the marketplace. You should never use one.

6. Don’t Swipe at Checkout, Either. Chip-enabled payment cards are protected by very powerful fraud-fighting properties. The magnetic stripe on the back of the card is much less secure, which is why you should always avoid “swiping” their payment card at checkout. If a retailer has a valid reason for not accepting chip card payments, you should ask to use Apple, Samsung or Android Pay instead.

7. Keep a Close Eye on Balances. You need to keep tabs on your checking, savings and credit

accounts, know how much money you have on deposit, and also track how much you owe on revolving charge accounts. If dramatic changes in balances are noticed, you should contact Horizons immediately.

8. Use Mobile Controls and Alerts. Fraud continues to rise – and is even more prevalent during the busy holiday shopping season – which is why it is so important for you to play an active role in your own card security. Horizons offers members CardValet®. It is a mobile app for card control, to set up alerts to monitor transactions and may help stop fraudulent attempts before they can be carried out. With CardValet®, you can restrict purchases to certain locations, merchants, merchant types, and turn your card(s) off altogether when not in use. You can also set up e-lerts through Horizons@Home. You customize your account alerts and receive transaction activity via email or text.

CHeCk Your Cookie and PoP-uP settings

If you are getting sent back to the login page after entering your information into Horizons@Home and/or Click and Pay it could be because the cookie and pop-up settings in your web browser or device (i.e Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari web browser, or iPhone or Android device) need to be configured:

GOOGLE CHROME• Click Menu (the three dots

button in upper right corner), then click Settings.

• In settings, click show Advanced Settings.

• Under Privacy, click the Content Settings button

• When that box opens, make sure Block third-party cookies and data is unchecked under the Cookies option

• In that same box, scroll down to Pop-Ups and make sure Allow all sites to show pop-ups is checked

FIREFOX• Click Menu (the three lines

button in upper right corner), then click Options

• Click Content, then make sure Block pop-up windows is unchecked under Pop-Ups

• On the left hand menu, click Privacy

• Under History click on the drop down next to Firefox will and select Use custom settings for history and then make sure Accept cookies from sites is checked and underneath that is set to Always.

SAFARI• Under the Preferences

heading, click Privacy• Under Cookies and website

data select Always allow• Back under the Preferences

heading, click Security - make sure the Block Pop-Ups option is unchecked

INTERNET EXPLORER• Click menu (the gear icon in

the upper right corner), then click Internet Options

• Under Privacy, click Advanced under the Settings section

• Make sure first and third party cookies are set to Accept, then hit OK

• Under the same Privacy tab, make sure Turn on pop-up blocker is unchecked under Pop-up Blocker, then click Apply

iPHONE• Open the Settings app and

scroll down to Safari and click on it

• Under General, make sure Block pop-ups is unchecked

• Under Privacy & Security, make sure Block Cookies is set to Always Allow

ANDROID (This will vary on which

operating system and phone you have but the options will be similar)• Open the Browser• Go to Menu then choose

If you choose to self-enroll into Horizons@Home online.Follow these steps:

You need to have a valid email address and that email address must be registered with Horizons FCU prior to enrolling.

PASSWORD REQUIREMENTS:• Must be at least 8 characters

but not more than 20 characters

• It is case sensitive• Must contain at least 2 of the

following character types - uppercase Letters, lowercase letters, numbers and only these special characters are allowed (‘! # $ * ? @ . - _’)

• Cannot contain your user ID• Cannot be consecutive

numbers or letters (for example 1234 or abcde)

• Cannot be numbers or letters in a series (for example 11111 or aaaaa)

• Cannot contain your name, address, social security number, or phone number

• Cannot contain the word ‘password’

• Cannot contain the word ‘Fiserv’We recommended to incorporate

numbers and special characters to make a stronger password.

You will have three security questions to set up. You select the questions from a drop down menu and provide the answer.

You must set up the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) as well, setting a phrase and choosing/uploading an image. If you do not set up the MFA you may experience difficulty accessing your online account(s).
