2018 Judges’ Biographies Barbara Dempsey Alderman - Barbara Alderman bought her first dog, an Afghan Hound, in 1959. Bought as a pet, she was urged to show. "We did and became hooked on dogs." She bred Afghans for some time then became an AKC licensed assistant handler. She eventually became a licensed all-breed handler, handled professionally for 28 years, then applied to judge in 1987. Mrs. Alderman is currently approved to judge all breeds, Best in Show and Miscellaneous Breeds. Terry d. Chacon - Terry received her first Afghan hound as a birthday gift, from her husband Eddie, in 1973. In spite of her antics and challenges, we learned to fall in love with the breed! Her first show dog came from the lovely Margie Pugh of "Bonanza" Afghan Hounds in 1978, and two years later, I purchased a bitch from her as well. These two dogs, namely Am. Can. and Mex. Ch. Bonanza Red Han Solo, and Am. Can. and Mex. Ch. Bonanza C & H Sugar Cookie, not only became my first two champions, but also my foundation. I thus began my lifelong love affair with the beautiful Afghan Hound, and proudly bred my dogs under the prefix “ShaCone." I have bred, owned and finished over 80 American Champions, many that are co-owned with Abbe Shaw of "Abaca" fame. As an accomplished artist whose works have been exhibited and now part of the permanent collection of the AKC Dog Museum in St. Louis, Mo., she has recently finished two larger than life-size bronze Afghan statues that will make their home in Norway. Terry also works in oil painting doing commissioned dog portraits, dog show scenes and plain air paintings and is proud to say she has artwork in over 20 countries. She has also done the artwork for the SBKC catalog for the last several years. Terry, a member of SBKC, she has been licensed to judge Afghan Hounds and Junior Showmanship by the AKC for 17 years, and apart from the numerous assignments in America, I’ve also had the pleasure of judging in Canada and South Africa, will soon judge in England and Australia. Terry also judged the AHCA National Specialty which was the highlight of her judging career. Gayle M Denman - Gayle has been involved in the purebred dog fancy since the mid 80’s.Beginning in 1985, she co-bred and exhibited bull terriers and in 2006, she began co-breeding and exhibiting miniature bull terriers under Gandalf’s Miniature Bull Terriers. Gayle began judging 20+ years ago and judges the non-sporting group, all-breed junior showmanship, a handful of herding and working breeds and the majority of the terrier group. Gayle has presented the Bull Terrier Judges’ Education seminar at The Carolina Dog Judges Study Group and the revised Bull Terrier Judges Education seminar at AKC Advanced Judges Institute. She was honored to have judged Silverwood, the annual Bull Terrier Club of America premier event, to have been selected to judge the 2018 Isis Vabo, an invitational competition held in conjunction with Silverwood, and at the Great Western Terrier Association. Gayle is a founding member and Show Chair of the newly recognized Great Basin Non-Sporting Club of Utah and Show Chair for Group IV Terrier Club of Salt Delegate for their club. She is a lifetime member, Golden State Bull Terrier Club, and Santa Barbara Kennel Club. Recently retired from a 26-year career as VP Finance, she is now able to concentrate on her interest in AKC judging. Gayle and her husband, Dick, live with two miniature bull terriers. Bindi and Abi are their constant companions and occasionally they allow Gayle and Dick to share a comfy recliner with them.

Dawn Droel - Dawn has been showing dogs since 1983, exhibiting in Junior Showmanship, Obedience, Conformation, Hunt tests, and Field trials. Dawn’s original breed was Australian Shepherds, then American Cocker Spaniels, and for the last 25 years Brittanys. She and her husband were professional handlers, and then started judging in 2001. She and her husband have bred Best in Show and Dual Champion Brittanys. Dawn and her husband are also members of the Santa Barbara Kennel Club.

19

Dr. German Otero Fraud – Dr. Otero started in dogs at a very young age. In 1977 he joined the French Army to learn how to train and live with dogs and graduated with a Masters in dog training. He then returned to Mexico where he received his DVM. Since 1978 he has participated in obedience and conformation. He then received a license to judge all obedience, conformation, temperament testing and tracking. He has bred Rottweilers, Bull Terriers, Malinois, Staffie Bull, Am Staffs, Dobermans, Border Collies, Chihuahua Bulldogs, German Shepherds and Poms. He has judged and shown in several countries, but is most involved with Bull Terriers, Am Staffs and Staffie bulls. Kathy Bilicich Garcia - Kathy shows and breeds Shih Tzu under the prefix, Shar-Ming. Both her grandmother and her mother were breeder of Champion Shih Tzu since the early 1970's. They have bred, owned/exhibited well over 150 champions. Kathy competed in Juniors for the majority of her adolescence achieving the Nation title of #1 Toy Breed Junior handler two consecutive years. She worked as an apprentice to several successful handlers before working independently as a professional handler specializing in Toy breeds and drop coats. She has shown a variety of breeds to champion titles, BIS and group and specialty wins. Three of her proudest moments were judging Sweeps at the 2014 Shih Tzu National, winning the Shih Tzu National in 2015 and the Toy Group at Westminster in 2016 with Ch Wenrick's Don't Stop Believing - "Panda", bred by Wendy Paquette, Jody Garcini and Richard Paquette, owned by her Mother Sharon. Kathy is a director of the American Shih Tzu Club, President of Shih Tzu Fancier of Southern California and is a member of Morris and Essex Kennel Club. Kathy has three beautiful daughters who are the very best "puppy socializers" around. Peter Green - Born in Neath Wales on the cusp of WWll. Peter grew up in the depravation that accompanied and followed the War. His Uncle, Harold Snow introduced him at the age of eleven to what would become his life's passion, showing and breeding Terriers. He attended shows, showing and grooming the Felstead dogs till he emigrated to the USA not once but twice, first to Malibu Ca, too much for a young man from Wales and then a few years later to Pool Forge and the Weimers in Chuchtown Pa (more like Wales) He has remained in this area ever since and has become the most well-known and one of the most respected Terrier Men in the world. He has won MCKC nine times some of which with the famous wires Gasul Excellence and Forchlas Cariad and Rigador Right Again. Galsul Excellence going on to top dog. He has won the terrier group at Westminster several times, notably with the Wire Sunnybrook Spot On, twice ,the second time Duke came out of retirement at the age of eight! He has won BIS at Westminster four times and as such holds the record in tandem with the famous Percy Roberts. After retiring from handling in in 2006 Peter was approved by the AKC to judge all terriers and the group. He has judged BIS at MCKC the terrier group at Westminster the AKC Show and Crufts. He was also honored to judge BIS at Crufts as well as win BIS there with the Norfolk bitch Cracknor Cause Celebre. Most recently Peter has been invited to judge BIS at Westminster. Peter’s judging BIS at Santa Barbara is 40 years after winning BIS at Santa Barbara. Cheri Hollenback – Cheri has owned, exhibited and bred Samoyeds under the “Cascade” kennel name since 1991. She has always appreciated the versatility and beauty of the Samoyed breed, enjoying their enthusiasm and antics in all settings. She started judging in 2008. As a member of the Samoyed Club of Washington State and the Samoyed Club of America since the late1980’s, she has served in a number of club offices and roles. She is delighted to be judging for the Santa Barbara Kennel Club and wishes to thank the hard working show committee for their efforts and the exhibitors for sharing their marvelous dogs with her. Ryan Lee Horvath – His parents surprised him with his first Dachshund, a dappled miniature smooth, at age 13 and dachshunds have been a large part of his life ever since. With very limited breeding they have enjoyed some success. He began his involvement in clubs with the Dachshund Club of 20

He used to accompany Kitty Kolyer to dog shows and work with her in her kennel which instilled in him the love of dog shows. Once leaving Kolyer Kennels he became a PHA handler focusing mainly on working breeds, but also handled of toy and non-sporting breeds. In the mid-70s Glen got his first Standard Poodle from Bud Dickey of the famous Dassin Poodles. He is proud of the fact that he is still involved with Dassin as a partner with Joseph Vergnetti. Handling led to judging, which he has done for the past ten years, judging breeds in the Working, Toy and Non-Sporting groups. Glen is still actively showing dogs and has owned the top Non-Sporting dog in 2010 and one of the top Doberman's in the country in the years 2013 through 2016. Glen is a member of Santa Barbara Kennel Club. Betty Regina Leininger – Betty’s experience in purebred dogs began with the breeding and exhibiting of German Shepherd Dogs in her native home of Newfoundland, Canada. In 1970, she moved to the United States and became an AKC licensed Professional Handler and a member of the Professional Handlers Association. During her extensive handling career she guided the show career of many top winning dogs, and also guided the breeding programs of many of her show dog clients. After a highly successful multi-breed career as a Professional Handler she became a 21

Betty has judged the Doberman Pinscher Club of America National Specialty on three occasions, the Doberman Pinscher Top 20, the Akita Club of America National Specialty and the Rottweiler National, to name a few. Her international judging has taken her to Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Columbia, El Salvador, Venezuela, Taiwan, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Italy to name just a few. In the late 1970s Betty co-authored a book entitled, Preparation and Presentation of the Show Dog, under the name of Betty R. Brucker. She has conducted handling seminars throughout the continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska and New Zealand. She co-founded the Newfoundland (All-Breed) Kennel Club in 1965 and has been active in many kennel clubs over the years. She served as a Board Director of the Atlanta Doberman Pinscher Club in the late 1970s, was a member of the Waukesha Kennel Club in the mid-1980s and has been a member of the Doberman Pinscher Club of America since 1971. Betty lives in Frisco, Texas with her Long Coated Chihuahua named “Beau.” Elaine J. Lessig - Elaine of Clinton, NJ bought her first Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in 1987. That purchase changed her life forever. By 1999 when she began judging, she had bred, owned, and handled many of her dogs to their championships, group wins, and a national specialty win too. Winning Best of Opposite Sex in a large entry at Westminster in 2001 was truly memorable. She continues to breed her Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and English Toy Spaniels, have them shown, and to enjoy their successes. Currently, Mrs. Lessig judges the Sporting, Toy, Non-Sporting groups, and best in show. Her life in dogs includes judging here and abroad, writing for a dog publication, and being an active club president and show chair. Decorating and collecting vintage clothing, especially hats, are personal passions. Mrs. Lessig and her husband, Dr. Marvin Lessig, recently celebrated their fiftieth anniversary. Mrs. Lessig is thrilled to be coming to judge at Santa Barbara for the first time. Joe McGinnis - Joe has been an active dog fancier since 1977. Mr.McGinnis also served in almost every dog club capacity from teaching Conformation Classes to Chairing large shows. Due to his ownership of a publishing company which produced six monthly dog magazines, McGinnis suspended breeding and exhibiting activities so as not to have any conflict of interest. Sale of the magazines in April of 2017 has made it possible for him to resume his judging career. His primary interests are all Toy Breeds, Golden Retrievers and Doberman Pinschers, in all of which he's had many years of experience working with the Judges' Education Committees of the parent clubs. He's heavily committed to dog-world-related charitable organizations and views the health and future of purebred dogs and the sport as a responsibility he takes very seriously. Outside of dogs, McGinnis has extensive experience in real estate, exhibiting purebred cattle, live entertainment, and is a Tony Award winning Broadway producer. Semi-retired, Joe hopes to now explore the areas he could not while working 60-hour weeks for four decades. Elizabeth “Beth” Sweigart - Beth was born on Long Island and raised with the Labs her father hunted ducks with, Labrador’s though they were really the family pets. Since the mid-seventies she has bred and shown Norwich and Norfolk terriers including many Best in Show winners and the Norfolk bitch Cracknor Cause Celebre number one all breeds and MCKC BIS winner. Since retiring as a professional handler in 2006 Beth has been an AKC approved judge. Currently approved to judge Sporting,Terrier and Toy Groups as well as some breeds in the Working and Herding groups. She have been privileged to judge at the AKC show and Westminster KC as well as many countries throughout the world and have met many wonderful people through this sport. Patricia Wincop – Patricia’s first encounter with Bull Terriers was in 1965. Her then husband came home one day with an ugly white puppy adding to the two poodles and a rescue Greyhound already there. A week later the ugly puppy was running the household and they named her Sugar - the Poodles loved her. After breeding two liters they decided to move to Queensland and bought 10 acres of land to accommodate a kennel for Bull Terriers to breed and show them. In Queensland at that time there was no Bull Terrier Club, just a combined Staffordshire and Bull Terrier Club. They approached the Canine Control and were granted permission to start a Bull Terrier Club of which both she and her husband have served in many capacities. When she decided that she would like to judge Bull Terriers, the rules at that time required that she judge the whole Terrier group. She has judged throughout Australia and New Zealand and judged the Bull Terrier Club of America in 2008. She has bred a number of champions and exported to the US and to New Zealand. Frederick R. Vogel - Dogs of any breed and hounds in particular, have been a constant for Fred. He met his Borzoi in 1969 while a student at Bowdoin College and that lead to his being owned by one in 1974. He met his wife Carol in 1978 when they bought littermates and in 1982 they married. Over the years they have bred and finished over thirty borzoi champions under the kennel name Brodny. Their Ch. Brodny’s Ironwood won the Borzoi Club of America’s National Show in 1994 under the later borzoi-breeder judge Dr. Asa Mays. Most recently they campaigned to number one the littermate brothers GCh. Greyhaven’s Wizard Crystal and GCh. Greyhaven’s This Rough Magic, SC, FCH, CGC both bred by their good friend Marilyn Polsfuss, Greyhaven Borzoi. Not since the late ‘70’s have there been multiple Best in Show brothers and they were handled to their wins by Fred, as well as Aidan having won the breed at Westminster and all-hound shows.Dachshunds joined the Vogel household in 1986 when the late dachshund breeder/artist Peggy Westphal presented them with Tommy, a standard wirehaired dachshund who became Ch. Westphal’s Tomten of Brodny. Within a year Lushy, Ch Westphal’s Lush Life of Brodny joined them and as they say “the rest is history.” Fred and Carol joined forces with their long-time friend and dachshund breeder Judy Anderson and under the Brodny-Schoolhouse prefix have bred more than one-hundred dachshund champions, mostly wires, many of whom were Best Show winners, National Specialty variety winners, Specialty Winners and Westminster winners. Add Greyhounds, Scottish Deerhounds, Irish Wolfhounds and PBGV’s to the mix of hounds that have resided at Fred and Carol’s home.Fred is the Delegate from The Windham County Kennel Club, a member and past show chairman and President of The Eastern Dog Club, a Lifetime Member of The Borzoi Club of America, and a member of The Dachshund Club of America. He is licensed “permit” judge for entire Hound Group. In 2014 The Santa Barbara Kennel Club and Purina Pro Plan in conjunction with the Breeder’s Showcase honored Fred and Carol along with their dachshund co-breeder Judy Anderson as “outstanding breeders and contributors to the sport of dogs and to the Hound Group.” Fred commented that “it is always an honor to be asked to judge, especially this assignment.”

Sunday – NOHS is offered The AKC National Owner-Handled Series is a non-titling competition for dogs that are exhibited by their owners that are not professional handlers. Exhibitors must declare their dog is Owner-Handled eligible at the time of entry on the entry form. Dogs entered in the Amateur-Owner-Handler class will automatically be marked as eligible to compete in the NOHS. Eligible dogs will be identified by an asterisk in the judge’s book, steward’s book & the catalog. Dogs must be handled throughout the breed level competition for the regular show by an eligible owner. Professional handlers*, household members and current assistants** to professional handlers may not exhibit the dog in any NOHS competition during the entire show. Owner-Handled Best of Breed will be selected from the dogs that are eligible to compete in the Best of Breed competition including Winners Dog, Winners Bitch and winners of the non-regular classes.

o If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is Owner-Handled competition eligible, it will automatically be Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety and be eligible to compete in both the regular as well as the Owner-Handled group.

o If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is not eligible for Owner-Handled competition and the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety is eligible, the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety will compete against the eligible exhibits of the other sex to determine Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety.

o If neither the Best of Breed nor the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety are Owner-Handled competition eligible and Select Dog & Select Bitch are both eligible, the judge is to choose Best Owner-Handled exhibit from the Selects and eligible Winners Dog or Winners Bitch.

o If one of the Selects is eligible, excuse all Champions and non-regular class winners of the same sex and then choose Best Owner-Handled exhibit from the remaining dogs of the opposite sex including the eligible Winners.

o If Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed, Select Dog & Select Bitch are not eligible, the judge may choose any eligible dog remaining in the ring including Winners Dog or Winners Bitch as Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety.

o If the Best of Winners is eligible, the other Winner is ineligible since it was defeated. o No class dogs other than the Winners Dog & Winners Bitch are eligible to return to the ring.

The breed will not be represented in the Owner-Handled Group if there is no eligible dog competing in the Best of Breed or in Best of Winners competition. *Professional handlers are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers’ organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay within the last five years **A current assistant is defined as anyone employed by a professional handler on a full-time basis, or assisting a professional handler at the show or any time during the cluster/weekend. Current assistants that are eligible to compete in Junior Showmanship (meet age & amateur status requirements) may participate in NOHS. .AKC Revised 5/11/18

A first place in Novice without competition leading to a Best Junior award with competition would count as one win towards moving to Open at a licensed or member show. Junior Handlers who win a third Novice Class with competition, if a win in Novice leads to a Best Junior with competition present it will count as one win towards moving to Open, after the closing of entries for a show are required to transfer their entry from the Novice Class to the Open Class by notifying the Superintendent or Show Secretary at least one-half hour prior to the scheduled start of Junior Showmanship judging at the show. Open. This class shall be for boys and girls who are at least 9 years old and under 18 years old on the day of the show, and who have won three first place awards in a Novice Class or if a win in Novice leads to a Best Junior with competition present it will count as one win towards moving to Open in a licensed or member show. Master Class This class will be for boys and girls who are at least 9 years old and under 18 years on the day of the show, and who have won 10 Best Junior wins with competition from the Open Class. The calendar for this class will be consistent with the eligibility dates for the AKC National Championship. All Juniors meeting the criteria for this class are required to enter the Master Class and may change their entry the day of the show if entries have already closed. Once the eligibility time frame for that year has passed all participants return to the Open Class to compete for the following year. Reserve Best Junior Handler An All-Breed club offering Junior Showmanship shall offer Reserve Best Junior Handler, a Group Club or Specialty Club has the option to offer Reserve Best Junior. After the judge has awarded the Best Junior Handler, the second place winner from the class that the Junior was awarded Best Junior Handler is to return to the ring to compete for Reserve Best Junior Handler. Each dog must be owned or co-owned by the Junior Handler or by the Junior Handler's father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, grandfather or grandmother, including step and half relations or by a member of the Junior Handler's household. Every dog entered for Junior Showmanship must be eligible to compete in Dog Shows or in Obedience Trials. BITCHES IN SEASON ARE NOT ELIGIBLE. Santa Barbara Kennel Club Graciously Offers These Challenge Trophies In memory of Tom and Ann Stevenson a challenge trophy is offered by Mr. and Mrs. Martin

Sosnoff (“Atalanta”), Mrs. Linda C. Campbell (“Dawin”) and Senhora Zuleika Borges Torrealba (“Da Maya”). The bowl of sterling silver was originally offered in 1940 by Mrs. Geraldine R. Dodge at the Morris and Essex Kennel Club for Best Pointer in Show. Santa Barbara Kennel Club feels that it is particularly apt for this trophy to be offered in honor of Tom and Ann as they were committed to offering the best of foreign judges to the American

fancy on the West Coast, just as Mrs. Dodge did on the East Coast.

The Champion Kippax Fearnought Challenge Trophy, a Sterling Silver Plate, is offered by friends of Santa Barbara Kennel Club for Best Foreign Bred Dog in Show. The Bulldog, Ch. Kippax Fearnought was the first foreign bred dog to win Best in Show at both Santa Barbara

Kennel Club (1957) and Westminster Kennel Club (1955).

Chris and Erna Aucamp offer a Challenge Trophy for Best Foreign Bred Dog in Show. A carving of a hippopotamus and two lions on a wooden base. (First offered in 2012).
