Tezpur University
2018 - 2020
Project NAYA SOCH (Networking and Action by Young Adults for Social Change)
Children constitute
approximately one-third of the world’s
population and there is growing
sensitization about the fact that no
country can meet its
development agenda without
molding the young minds to make
them more socially responsible
citizens. The young generation plays
an important role in realizing
sustainable change and it is imperative to empower them with accurate education, skills &
opportunities to shape their thought processes and nurture them as advocates for desired change.
The NAYA SOCH initiative conceptualized by the faculty & students of M.A. Communication for
Development, Tezpur University in 2017 aims to enhance the capabilities of a few such young
minds and make them aware of their human rights while ensuring they fulfill their social obligations.
The underlying intention is to boost their confidence and help them utilize their true potential to
accomplish requisite changes in themselves, their families and their communities, thereby inducing
the much-needed transformation in the society at large.
The pilot experiment started in three schools in Napaam village near Tezpur University, Assam
- Fakhrudin Ali Ahmed High School, Borghat, Panchmile Higher Secondary School and
Napaam MV school. Specific issues were identified that needed immediate action by the
community. The campaigns held thereafter were strategized to leverage the use of communication
12
as a tool to spread awareness about those issues and mobilize the community members to venture
into their own development agenda.
The major objectives of this initiative encompassed –
❖ To make the children aware of their human rights and social responsibilities;
❖ To upskill them as agents for social mobilization; and
❖ To empower them with necessary communication skills and enable them to bring about
constructive changes in their community with respect to the issues identified.
The Modus Operandi
NAYA SOCH was determined to train the school students and help them realize their worth in
bringing about tremendous changes with small efforts. The students of Semester III, Communication
for Development, Tezpur University divided themselves into three groups and chose one school
each in their vicinity. Every year since then, the C4D students have been engaging with the school
students in a sustained manner and carrying out participatory campaign activities along with the
students on various issues.
There has been an emphasis on using
participatory communication tools such as
puppetry, posters, theatre, videos, wall
magazines to generate awareness on the issues
of focused interest. The C4D students
trained the school children in the production of
different media tools and facilitated the
production of participatory videos and audio
programmes by the school students. The
students in each of the schools also organized awareness events on various issue.
The NAYA SOCH awareness campaigns have been well received by the various stakeholders
involved including school teachers, participating students and the local community. The young
children filled with both curiosity and enthusiasm proved to be the conduits of knowledge and
information to their respective society and accomplished great changes by learning simple things.
MA - C4D students from TU have played a critical role in the final accomplishment of the campaign
13
at three different locations while sowing the seeds of much needed social change at the grassroots
level of our nation, i.e. its rural dwellings.

the University has voluntarily donated one day’s salary to PMcare fund. In addition to the
voluntary donation to the PMcare fund, the employees of the University have also
distributed food packets to nearby villages, viz. Amolapam, Napam, domestic helper to
TU families, Sulab personnel (people engaged in sanitation work) working during

Ketekibari, Tezpur.
2. Face shields for medical staff to fight COVID-19: The University made two uniquely
designed face shields for medical staff to fight against COVID-19. One face shield is 3D
printed and the other was made manually in the central workshop of the University.
a. 3D printed face shield: The 3D printed face shields were jointly developed at
Embedded Systems and Robotics Lab and Applied Photonics and Nanophotonics Lab
at the University, which are supported under the funding of The Department of
Science & Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and eYantra Project (IIT
Bombay) and Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi respectively.
b. Manually prepared faces shields: The manually prepared face shields were designed in such a way that the front visor can cover the complete face along with the
ears and down to the chest and it is adjustable. The face shield also has a better air
circulation from the top to the bottom giving comfort to the user while inhale and
exhaling.
The University has dispatched the face shields to Tezpur Medical College & Hospital,
Gauhati Medical College, Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute, Borgang Catholic
Hospital. Civil Hospital, Tezpur.
Aerosol box for medical staff: In order to help the health-workers/medical
staff fighting against COVID-19, the University developed low-cost, relatively light-
weight aerosol box for health-workers currently handling COVID-19 patients. The
boxes have been fabricated manually at the central workshop facility of the
University. A team under the supervision of Prof. Pabitra Nath of Dept. of Physics
made the Aerosol boxes aiming at reducing exposure to medical personnel by
blocking aerosols. The University has dispatched first batch of boxes to Tezpur
Medical College & Hospitals (TMCH) and Tomo Riba Institute of Health and
Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Naharlagun, Arunachal Pradesh.

centrifuge machine and some other resources for testing of COVID-19 samples at
TMCH lab which is recognised by ICMR.
4. UVC germicidal chambers develop at Tezpur University: The University has
developed UVC-germicidal chambers to ensure better safety for the employees of
the University. The chamber is useful to sanitize mobile phones, car keys, wallets

germicidal chambers have been developed and currently installed at different
places within the campus. The locations are - Administrative building, Dean's
Building of SoE, Academic building II, HSS building, Energy Department, SBI Tezpur
University Branch and, SAIC. The members involved in developing the chambers are

Kalita. The team has been mentored by Prof. Pabitra Nath, Dept of Physics, Tezpur
University.
