Outreach vs. Engagement

Outreach and engagement are not the same.

Outreach tends to be in and out. Engagement is a long-term effort, a relationship.

Engagement means participating or becoming involved with others. This looks like• Being connected to others through a

defined purpose/plan• Being committed to a common

cause/purpose• Caring about similar issues

Engagement Example• DC Promise Neighborhood. The point

is to have the community working toward one goal, a collective goal. To make immediate and lasting positive change in a neighborhood.

• Determine best method to connect (face-to-face, virtual)

• Share information, services, programs in an effort to empower

• Respect the local culture
