Before you set up a p rinter:

< Set up the pr inter at the operating system level.

This step mu st be comp leted before the printer can be set up in R/ 3.

< Know the nam e of the printer.

This nam e is the network name of the printer (for examp le, FIN3 or

 \ \ FINA NCE\ ACCT2; not HP Laser Jet 5si).

< Know the typ e of printer.

This information is the manu facturer and mod el of the p rinter (for example, HP Laser Jet 

5si).

5. In Output device, enter a

descriptive name for the printer

(required).

6. Enter a short nam e in Short name 

or let the system d efine it for you(optional).

In our example, we w ill let R/ 3

define the short nam e.

7. Choose Device Att ributes tab.

8. In  Device type, choose to select

the app ropr iate device type for

your printer (required).

9. In Spool server , choose to select

the approp riate server w here yourprint r equests will be processed.

10. In  Model, enter the p rinter’s make

and model. 

11. In  Location, enter the p rinter’s

location.

The Model an d  Location fields are

important because you cannot use

a printer if you do not know its

location and its model nam e. The

key is to make you r d escription as

precise as possible. If the p rinter

has moved, remember to upd ate

this field.

12. The message field is used for a

temp orary message that replaces

th e Location text. Messages are

usefu l if a p rinter is “offline” for

repair, etc.

13. Choose the HostSpoolAccMethod

to select the app ropriate access

At this point, things can get

complicated. In genera l, use the

following local access method s to

redu ce network problems in the

system.

For:

< NT

Select C  – Direct operating

system call.

< UNIX

Select  L – Print locally via

 LP/LPR.

15. In  Host printer , enter the printer

name as d efined in your network 

(required).

16. Select the Output Attributes tab.

17. In this section, you can sp ecify a

cover page (optional).

18. Select Monitor using monitoring

architecture.

If you h ave a large num ber of 

printers, do not select this option.

b. If we had entered a short

name, and there is a name

conflict with an existing

If this name conflict exists, at

The spool is the R/ 3 System’s outpu t man ager. Data is first sent to the R/ 3 spool and then tothe operating system for printing.

There may be p roblems with the p rinter at the operating system level. These problems need

to be resolved imm ediately for time-critical pr int jobs (for exam ple, checks, invoices,

shipping d ocuments, etc.) or there m ay be an op erational imp act.

You sh ould check for active spool jobs that have been ru nning for over an h our. These long-

run ning jobs could ind icate a problem with the operating system spool or the printer.

1. In the Command field, enter transaction SP01 and choose Enter

3. Set the Date created field to, for

example a week ago, or to any

The range of data w ill depend onyour installation. If you gen erate

hun dreds or thousands of spools a

day, you wou ld choose every

day. This data range w ould be

mu ch shorter, possibly only two

days.

The SAP spool is the outpu t man ager for R/ 3. From the SAP spool, the pr int job goes to theoperating system’s print spooler or m anager. You n eed to check that old sp ool jobs are being

prop erly cleared by the d aily batch job.

< Depend ing on how the spool system has been configured , old sp ools will use da tabase

space or file system space.

Whether it is database or file system space, potentially available “space” is being used

by these sp ools.

< Look for any errors that m ay indicate problems in the pr inting process.

After the system has been

operating for some time, check 

wh ether old jobs are being pu rged.

4. Scroll down the screen to find the

oldest date. This date shou ld bewithin the time frame d efined for

the job that run s RSPO0041 

program (see SAP note 16083).

If the spool requests beyond th e

minimal age are foun d, the job

may not be prop erly deleting the

old jobs and n eeds to be analyzed.

5. To view the attribu tes of a spool

request, highlight a requ est and

choose .

Two reasons for failure of the job that ru ns the  RSPO0041 program are:

< The user ID un der w hich the job is run does not have th e prop er security au thorization

to execute the program .

< The job is routed to an invalid p rinter.

From this screen, the spool

attributes, outpu t, and temporary

sequential d atabase (TemSe)

attributes can be conveniently

accessed.

6. Notice that information on the

 Number of pages generated, the

 Recipient , and the Delete date of the

spool request are displayed.

priority of the outp ut requ est. The

priority levels are from 1–9 with 1

being the highest p riority. 

9. Select the TemSe attributes tab.

size of the ob ject as it is stored in

the TemSe database. It is useful to

know this information w hen there

are inconsistencies in the spool

and TemSe databases.

There are two typ es of requests:< Spool

< Output

The spool request contains the “printed ” docum ent wh ich has not been sent to the outp ut

device. The outpu t da ta of this docum ent is partially formatted and stored in the TemSe

database. The outp ut requ est tells R/ 3 to format the request to a particular device and

contains attributes su ch as target p rinter, num ber of copies, etc. Each time you select the

printer icon, an outpu t request is created for the spool request.

A spool consistency check compares d ata in the spool and outp ut requ est tables (TSP01 an d

TSP02), with the en tries in the TemSe tables (TST01 an d TST03), TSP0E (archive) and

TSP02F (fron tend pr int requ est) tables. It also disp lays a list of obsolete wr ite locks whichshould be deleted.

If you d elete table entries man ually from the spool and TemSe tables or d elete spool and

TemSe objects from the d irectories, inconsistencies can occur . Other cau ses of 

inconsistencies are r eport and transaction terminations or an incorrectly executed client

copy.

the TemSe tables to make sure that each

spool object has correspond ing entries in

each of the tables.

1RWH There is another rep ort, RSPO1043, tha t can be used for the spool consistency check. It should be

schedu led as a p eriodic batch job (see SAP note 98065).

A TemSe consistency check comp ares d ata in TST01 [Temp orary Sequential Database

(TemSe) objects] and TST03 (TemSe data) tables. The TemSe conta ins objects tha t are

personn el adm inistration temp orary d ata. The report RSTS0020 performs the consistency

check.

The relationship between th e object and d ata in the TemSe may be d estroyed d ue to the
