Recruiting the very best . . .

I’ve been spending a lot of time recently ininterviews, recruiting new teachers and

managers to the school, and promotingsome of our existing staff to new positions. It’s been very hard work, but extremelyrewarding. One thing I can say with myhand on my heart is that every single oneof the people who made it through did sonot just because they were the pick of thebunch, but because the selection panelsfelt they have what it will take to meet thechallenges ahead. In some cases, wherewe felt none of the candidates were up tothe job, we turned them all down, preferringto bide our time rather than sell ourselvesshort. This is important, because there isno place in our plan for the uncommitted,or for those that don’t meet our highstandards. The path to improvement wehave mapped out is going to be toughgoing, and will require great commitment, high performance, and lots of enthusiasmfrom everyone – students, staff, managersand leaders.

My agenda in this respect is borne out bythe findings of some very importantresearch by McKinsey & Company, a largeglobal research and consultancy business. They examined the world’s best performingschool systems to find out what they dothat makes them so successful. The resultsclearly indicated that three things make allthe difference, regardless of the culture inwhich they are applied. Firstly, getting theright people to become teachers. Secondly,

providing them with the right support andtraining on the job. And finally, ensuringthat all children benefit from getting thebest possible teaching.

Now, my belief is that what is true forschool systems is also true for schools.Starkly, the research found that the effectof good quality teaching quality isprofound. The graph shows that twostudents performing equally well at age 8will, by the age of 11, perform verydifferently if they have experienced thebest and the worst teaching respectively.

I am absolutely committed to ensuring ourteaching is of the highest standards, whichis why we are investing so much time inprofessional development, and inrecruitment. So when I’m asked bycolleagues on a Friday afternoon why I’vebeen in interviews flat out since Mondaymorning, my answer is clear.

Make Your Mark Year 8 tripThe Make Your Mark initiative

from Enterprise UK and TheCambridgeshire & PeterboroughEnterprise Learning Partnership gave 10 enterprising students and 2 BusinessStudies teachers from City of ElyCommunity College the opportunity toattend the free Make Your Mark eventheld on Friday 21st May at CambridgeGolf Club in Hemingford Abbots.

The morning was packed full of funenterprise activities and challenges, and Make Your Mark Ambassadors and Business Volunteers were invitedalong to share their success story andoffer useful advice.

The students from City of ElyCommunity College demonstrated howenterprising they were when two of thegroup were in the winning team andreceived awards at the end of the eventfor coming up with a unique promotionalcampaign for their super hero.

Laura Nicolajsen was one of the students chosen to attend the event. She said:

“On Friday 21st May, 10 students from year 8 were chosen to go on an enterprise activity atCambridge Golf Club in Hemingford Abbots. Mark Warrick, CEO and Gemma Gardiner,Communications Director of Kaboom Creative came to speak to us about how he started upKaboom Creative and Busking Cancer. We soon moved on to a challenge of making up asuper hero as part of Kaboom’s new project. The best idea from the day would be used inthe project. The Superhero project was to have someone that a county could complain orgive praises to so that improvements could be made. We also had a competition on whichgroup could make the most leapfrogs. The leapfrogs represented a business being overtakenby another business. The group with the most leapfrogs won. We then had lunch, which wasvery nice. We could catch up with friends and tell them about the things we had enjoyed. After lunch we had one final talk hosted by ‘Enterprise UK’ and we were off back to schooljust in time for period 5.”

It was a huge success enjoyed by teachers and students alike and demonstrated just howenterprising young people can be when given the opportunity.

What’s the Solution? The Great DebateNatural resources are running out ... how will we power the world in the future? How will we protect East Angliaand the Fens from rising water levels? As our capabilities for destroying each other develop, how do we stop thehuman race destroying itself? What will the school of the future look like?

These are just some of the urgent global questions tackled by students from City of Ely Community College andKing’s Ely at the ‘What’s the Solution’ debate on Friday 2 July.

Teams from years 7, 8 and 9 at both schools had been researching one particular issue and preparing their ‘pitch’ for a few weeks, but the event, held in the Learning Resource Centre, was their opportunity to make theircase heard.

Each team presented their pitch to Catherine Jenkinson-Dix and Sue Freestone, Principals at City of ElyCommunity College and King’s Ely respectively, and their Chairs of Governors, Bill Harrison and Richard Slogrove.

Catherine Jenkinson-Dix said “The quality of entries this year was outstanding. Thestudents had really engaged with their‘issue’ and come up with some highlyinnovative solutions. In the end we couldn’tdecide between the two top teams andawarded them both with joint first prize. My thanks go to all the students who tookpart, and to all the staff who worked hard to make the event such a great success.”

NFTE and BTEC extra curricular successRhiannon Hope, pictured receiving her certificate from the Principal, along

with seven other year 11 students has passed the Network for TeachingEntrepreneurship Course in ‘Preparing for Enterprise’. This shows thatstudents have:• Developed and implemented a business idea• Engaged in a selling activity• Presented a business plan

This is a course that is run as an extra curricularactivity along with the BTEC in ‘Enterprising Skills’with the year 10 and 11 G&T students. Thesecourses show students how they can start and run asmall business, what the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur are and how torecognise and evaluate business opportunities, to calculate return on investment, toutilize an income statement, to develop and make presentation and to produce abusiness plan. As part of the NFTE programme the students have to set up and run theirown businesses and sell their products in the college. One group produced cookieswhich they sold to very eager consumers, selling out as soon as their goods went onsale and the other were selling socks and leg warmers. Both groups sold all their itemsand made a profit on their initial investments.

SIXTH FORM NEWSFuture business leadersThe highlight of the 6th Form Conference day on 6 July was a Dragons’ Den style competition, whereteams of students pitched their ideas for a newbusiness to a business expert, Rupert Wilkey,Managing Director of Clever Gecko. Clever Geckogenerously provided a prize worth £750, comprising help to developa business plan, designing and hosting a website and help withmarketing and finance.

Mark Sirot-Smith, Director of Sixth Form at Ely College commented:“As anyone in business knows, many of the best and most creativeideas for start-ups come from young people whose imaginationshave yet to be ‘managed’ by bosses and limited by acceptedpractices. This is why we’re so excited by this year’s businesscompetition, and in particular by the support package provided byClever Gecko. With their help, there’s a very real possibility that ourwinning team will go on to form a profitable business.”

Speaking on the day, RupertWilkey added: “The quality ofsome of the concepts presentedby students today wereoutstanding. But we had to selecta winner, and felt iwantajob.comjust had the edge. It has thepotential to address a real needfor students at the school now,

and in the future, and I hope to have the opportunity to help theseyoung people if they decide to form a business. We believe everyonehas the potential to start and run their own business, which is whywe are delighted to support events like this.”

Rupert also wanted to acknowledge the hard work of the runners up,especially Life Works, who overcame their personal hurdles andfound the courage and self-belief to stand up and present theirsuperb business idea, and Bingo Bonanza, a duo who gave 100%despite being ‘abandoned’ by the rest of their team. These twoteams and Service Search were awarded with special CommendationAwards for their hard work and effort.

H I S T O RY S P E C I A LBattlefields Trip

On Thursday, November 26th we departed from the College at 6.30 a.m. and arrived in

Calais at 13.15 (European Time). The first hotelwe went to was called Hotel Poppies d’Albert inAlbert. Whilst we were in Albert we visitedNotre Dame de Loretta, where 40,000 troopsare buried in both marked graves and ossuaries(mass burial pits). There was also an exhibitionof 2000 First World War items and areconstruction of trenches and dugouts. On Friday we visited the statue of the ‘Golden

Virgin’, which is on top of the Tower of the Basilica in Albert. Then we visitedLochnagar Crater, which is the largest mine crater in the world. After that we went toThiepval (The Memorial to the Missing) where there are 73,400 names engraved onwhite plaques, the brave soldiers who died between 1916-1917 and have no knowngraves. Afterwards we went to Newfoundland Park where we saw the ‘Tree of Death’and had a tour of the underground tunnels. We also went to the Menin Gate in Ypresfor the Last Post ceremony.

The second hotel we went to was called Hotel Oude Abdji in Lo-Reninge. On Saturdaywe went into Ypres again to visit the exhibition of ‘Flanders Fields’ in the Cloth Hall.We also went to the Menin Gate and the Leonidas chocolate shop. After that we went to Tyne Cot Cemetery, which is the largestBritish military cemetery and has over 45,000 soldiers buried there. Finally we went to the german cemetery at Langemark, which is a very sombre and forbidding place.

Years 10 and 11 go to Berlin

On Thursday 11th March Year 10 and 11 GCSE History students made their way to Berlin in order to further their studies on their in-depth Germany paper. We flew from Luton airport to find cold

weather in Berlin. We visited lots of iconic places including the Brandenburg Gate, SachenhausenConcentration camp and saw parts of the remainingBerlin Wall. We even climbed up to the top of theReichstag Government building and saw some beautifulsights over the whole of the city. We thoroughlyenjoyed the trip which also included some time towatch a Hertha Berlin match which took place in the1936 Berlin Olympics stadium! The students managedto follow the green cross code which is easy when youlook out for the Ampelmann signs! While the students stuck to their nutritionaldiet of sweets and MacDonald’s, the staff tried out some traditional German foodincluding currywurst which Mr Stoneman and Mr Whales especially enjoyed! I’m certain that all of the students took invaluable information from our visit, which I hope they remembered to include in their paper 1 GCSE!

H I S T O RY S P E C I A LYear 8 Holocaust Talk

In History we’ve been studying the Holocaust and were lucky enough to have a talk with a Holocaust survivor called Henri Obstfeld. He told us about his experiences of the Holocaust and what happened to him

after being separated from his parents for 4 years while they hid in secret in Amsterdam. They had to give himaway to some non-Jewish friends who looked after him. It was an interesting experience and helped us to gaina better understanding of life during the Holocaust.

Conference days at ElyWe hold conference days for all students three times a year. During these days, which are supported by

a range of sponsors and supporting agencies, students receive sessions to develop their knowledgeand understanding of topics related to Citizenship, PSHE and Careers. The programme is varied and manyoutside agencies are invited into the college to share their expertise on the topics the students are covering.

The most recent event, held in March, saw the year 7s celebratingdifferences, looking at how we perceive other cultures and ways of life.Year 8 worked on the ‘Real Game’, looking at different jobs whichcould lead them to the style of life they had decided they wanted andhow they could carry on with different methods of training anddevelopment after school to achieve this. Two of the college staffexplained to the students how they had gone through different jobsand training to be where they are now, one of whom was aprofessional hockey player before going into teaching.

Year 9 had a session on sex and relationships which was run by ourown team of experts from the Science department. This included asession from Drinksense toshow how alcohol can affecttheir relationships and their

resistance, and from a theatre group who gave an improvisationand question session on how relationships can affect people. Thiswas extremely well received by the students.

Year 10 were working on WEX Ability which is a programme whichprepares students for their work experience placements, whileyear 11 had their final session so it was important that they weregiven information that would assist them in their future lives andhelp relieve some of the pressure they would be feeling. To thisend we ran a programme on Money Management, DebtManagement, Reflexology, Yoga, First Aid and Study Skills.

Review of Ely Community College’s production ofBugsy Malone on the 30th March 2010The City of Ely Community College chose a fine musical for their show held at the Community College. Bugsy

Malone gave them every opportunity to display the talent of these young performers.

The leads in this production were outstanding. Bugsy Malone (DuncanEarlam) swaggered confidently about the stage, drawing us inextricablyinto his world of dangerous living. His charisma, timing and clear deliveryhelped create a credible and winning personality. Blousy Brown (ScarletEast) matched Duncan’s performance particularly well. Her fine singing, humorous characterization and delightful moments of dramatic vigouradded spice to the plot.

Fat Sam (Jamie Smith) blusteredeloquently as he tried to overcomehis mounting troubles andcomplained bitterly about the noisesmade by Knuckles (Pawel Kalasa).Tallulah (Chloe Van Putten) made an

attractive girl friend while Dandy Dan (Stephen Perry) was a splendidadversary, his fine demeanour setting him apart.

A plethora of ‘stiffs’, splurge guns, custard pies and ‘scraps’ moved theplot along well – a testament to the expertise of the Director Lloyd Popp, the dedication and hard work of the whole cast and the efficiency of stage props.

Some of the most notable highlights also included rousing choruses especially the final You Give a Little Love, moving solos especially Tomorrow sung by Fizzy (Lauren Harrington), some excellent dancing and choreography(thanks to the Artistic Director Ceris Eveleigh), delightful costumes and a resourceful stage set.

This was a splendid evening’s entertainment. Rosemary Westwell (as published in the Ely Standard)

EURO DISNEY HERE WE COME!Aparty of 43 year 7 students took part in a visit to Euro Disney in June.

This supported the work they had been doing on Tourism and Leisurein their Business Studies lessons. During the visit they spent the day inthe park going on as many rides as they could and ‘stitched up’ the groupleader by volunteering for her to go into the stage coach as part of theWild West Show. Here Mrs Curry was abducted by robbers and tied upbefore being rescued by the Seventh Calvary and Buffalo Bill, much to thedelight of the students. On the return journey the students visited CiteEurope where they were able to experience a large French shopping areabefore catching the ferry back to England. When asking one student whatthey had thought of the trip the reply came, ‘I was told it was amazing, it wasn’t. It was AMAAAAZING!’
