“Anyone could be seduced by research when the results pour in. The trick is to love it when the results aren’t forthcoming and the reasons why are elusive.” - Lisa Genova Neuroscientist/Author
Rich Seidner Director, Client Applications Higher Education / Academic Research
In your continual pursuit of understanding the reasons why… Our challenge, as a technology company, is to make sure that we understand where and how to add value to specific research processes and clearly define our relevance to your work.

Compute
A unified platform for delivering services in the data center. Supports a broad range of workload types including bare-metal, virtualized, big data, GPU accelerated - removing the burden of designing, implementing, and managing infrastructure.
“Virtualize” data - i.e. keep it where it is and use without extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL). Provide a common interface to data regardless of the data format and schema - structured and unstructured.
Securely integrate various cloud provider environments and research locations - creating Hybrid and Community clouds. Use the cloud services offerings of choice as required. Integrate cloud offerings through a secure, scalable, and consistent operations model.
Effectively collaborate with research colleagues via a high definition experience, whether on campus or mobile, using a variety of endpoint devices.
Researchers require access to data sets no matter where they reside or whether or not the data is in an optimized format for their current research.
Successful research requires collaboration with a broad set of colleagues, each having their own collaboration style and often being in varying geographic or physical locations.
Researchers process data for analysis, modeling, and understanding; often requiring robust compute resources for processing.
Researchers are looking to optimize the resources at their disposal whether they be on premise, off premise, physical assets or service provider offerings.
Internet2 provides SDN-based network connectivity between
researchers.

Collaboration-Voice, HD Video, Messaging.-Desktop, Mobile, Dedicated Endpoints.-On premise or cloud based.
Intercloud Fabric-End-to-end security with consistent policy enforcement.-Workload provisioning and bidirectional migration.-A single point of management and control.
Data Virtualization-Have the option to keep source data sets in place with federation.-Visually build complex queries and data operations.-Work with structured and unstructured data sets.

Two preeminent ways for us to deliver value to the academic research community: (1) Provide specific technology solutions that help to facilitate the
optimization of the research process Example: UCS Research Appliance Our recent work with researchers, scientists and partners, from the I2 community has resulted in a modification to the Cisco server line that provides an effective and inexpensive way for researchers to move large data files between project groups at line rate speeds (300 Gigabits at 9.3 GPS disk transfer over Internet2’s Advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 Services backbone)
(2) Invest in and collaborate with the academic research community on specific technological development
The Cisco Research Center facilitates research interactions between Cisco and the world-wide research community
Our Vision is to foster technology innovation through external research partnerships.
Our Strategy is to determine which universities align best with Cisco's strategic directions, then fund and support them via peer-to-peer relationships between Cisco technical leadership and university/institute researchers.
Our Execution methods are: External research programs (RFPs, Grants, SRAs) that Foster transparency in research relationships; Drive and facilitate technical curriculum & courses, symposia, external talks, etc.
We would like to extend an open invitation to research institutions to actively engage with us…
…in discussions about effective research technology architectures …to discuss the specific requirements for your research initiatives …to discuss how the workflow dynamics of your project(s) can be enhanced; and realize improved effectiveness through the integration of technology …in pursuing support for collaborative technology research through the Cisco Research Center
“As for the future, your task is not to foresee it, but to enable it.” Antoine DeSaint-Exupery
Aristocrat, writer, poet, aviator
Proud partner of the academic research community!
