Ab

stract:

Although the internet w

as not designed to carry voice and other delay sensitive streaming m

edia, thecom

bination of: wide bandw

idth residential access, technical standards that facilitate low cost econom

ies ofscale, forbearance from

taxing and government regulation, and som

e unique features is driving the migration

of Voice O

ver IP (V

oIP) from

enterprise to consumer applications. A

lready the small startup pioneers are

facing competition from

brand name providers such as V

erizon and AT

&T

. Poised for entry into the V

oIPspace are all the cable T

V providers w

ho are now m

oving beyond beta rollouts into expanded geographicofferings.

While there are several variations on service features and a range of costs w

hat nearly all these VoIP

services share is a cost less than 1/2 of basic circuit switched services. In addition m

ost service providersprovide the full set of class services (e.g. call w

aiting, conference calling, caller ID, etc) and unlim

iteddom

estic local and long distance calling for the same low

flat rate.

By taking advantage of the intrinsic portability of the signaling schem

es used in Session Initiation P

rotocol(S

IP) these services typically go beyond "m

e-too" voice telephony and allow such expanded capabilities as

multiple off prem

ise extensions, unified messaging, presence, and m

ultimedia support beyond just voice. In

the early stages of development are hybrid com

binations of wide area w

ireless cellular telephony togetherw

ith local area wireless V

oIP.

This presentation w

ill review the recent history and current state of the art in V

oIP as applied to residential

public network telecom

munications services. A

n overview of the key foundation technologies w

ill beprovided along w

ith a look at the likely future evolution of the technology and services.
