BACH, JOHANN SEBASTIAN - St Matthew Passion

In Spring 2015 the Academy of Ancient Music —described as “the finest period-instrument orchestra in the world” by Classic FM — releases a significant new recording of JS Bach St Matthew Passion BWV244, directed from the harpsichord by Richard Egarr. Performed in the original 1727 version, and with a superlative roster of soloists, this recording is strikingin its immediacy, clarity and directness, with numerous insightful and compelling details lost in subsequent versions. This release – the fourth on AAM Records – follows Birth of the symphony: Handel to Haydn, named BBC Radio 3 “Disc of the Week” and awarded five stars in Classical Music; JS Bach’s St John Passion, which was nominated for a 2014 Gramophone Award for best baroque vocal recording; and JS Bach’s Orchestral Suites, award five stars by Fine Music Magazine, and called “exceptional ... a feast of meaningfully understated musicianship” in an Editor’s Choice review in Gramophone magazine. Supplementary materials available online include preview tracks and videos, as well as a digital booklet featuring session photographs and scholarly notes.

Bach versus Haydn – replying to the question as to the reason for this programme compila-tion, Barthold Kuijken states that these compositions are amongst the very best works ever written for the flute by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Joseph Haydn. A comparison of these work groups, so very different in their respective styles, is exciting because they were crea-ted at almost the same time. C.P.E. Bach wrote the Quartets, Wq 93-95 during the year 1788 in Hamburg; Haydn composed the Trios, Hob XV: 15-17 1789/90 in Vienna/Eszterháza – a good ten years after Mozart’s well-known Flute Quartet in D major, K. 285 of 1777.These Quartets are amongst C.P.E. Bach’s (born 1714) very best creations; he was to die a year after they were composed. Haydn (born 1732) wrote the Trios at the end of his period with the Eszterházys. The death of Prince Nikolaus I in late 1790 broke off Haydn’s close ties with the court, and he was able to earn a living from his work from that time onward as a freelance artist. The stylistic differences between the two are enormous. In Bach, we find Sturm und Drang (storm and stress), Empfindsamkeit (sensitivity), contrasts, the unexpec-ted…, in Haydn, alongside his typical wit and moving depth, we find (apparent) simplicity, clear.

Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856), originally from Pressburg (today Bratislava), lived and worked in Vienna beginning in 1840; this city was the focal point of the musical world du-ring the first half of the 19th century. Mertz was one of the best-known guitar virtuosos of his time, composing brilliant works for his own use on his numerous concert tours. In these compositions, he orientated himself on the romantic piano music of Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin and especially Liszt, but the influences of Italian Belcanto in the style of Donizetti or Bellini can be clearly heard as well. Many guitarists and composers of the 19th century used instruments with an expanded range. Mertz changed from a six-stringed gui-tar to an instrument with eight strings, finally settling on a guitar with ten-strings. Raphaëlla Smits, the Belgian Grande Dame of the Guitar, uses two historic French instruments for this recording (guitar by Mirecourt, ca. 1827; guitar by Roudhloff ca. 1830), as well as an eight-stringed instrument by the luthier John Gilbert.

MARION COTILLARD AT THE STAKE IN THE ROLE OF JOAN OF ARC

Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher, written by the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger in 1938, is a fasci-nating oratorio. The text by Paul Claudel is constructed like a flashback, in which Joan looks back over her life just before she dies.Marion Cotillard plays Joan with an intensity and sincerity that leap from the screen. The last moments of the martyr’s life, illustrated by the evocative and innovative music of Honegger, resound like a heartrending cry. With an exceptional cast of performers, this live recording offers a gripping new version of one of the masterpieces of twentieth-century music.

‘THIS ROLE IS ONE OF MY GREATEST EXPERIENCES AS AN ACTRESS.’ MARION COTILLARD

The Re-Sound Beethoven collection brings the symphonies of Beethoven back to the loca-tions of their Viennese premieres. Four of the six venues where first performances of one or more of the nine symphonies were held still exist today, as do the eight Viennese hallsand theatres where the composer’s orchestral works were performed in his lifetime. The or-chestral forces of the Wiener Akademie corresponds in size and instrumentarium to those used by the composer. The producer Stephan Reh strives to reproduce the specific acoustical qualities of each room. «With our interpretations we wish to offer you music in the sound of its own time: we want to add to the possibilities of historical instruments the sound and the aura of the concert halls in which the composer himself conducted and experienced his works.»Martin Häselbock.

Driven by the works of this grand and prolific Italian composer, the internationally renowned violinist shares once again her passion with the excellent musicians of her string orchestra, La Pietà. For her 39th album in career, Angèle Dubeau offers a unique revisit to Ludovico Einaudi’s music, «changing its texture, rethinking its character, while bringing a new sonic dimension». After three critically acclaimed albums in the Portrait series devoted to Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt and John Adams, Angèle Dubeau delves into another distinctive minimalist universe. She chose 13 works arranged by François Vallières and herself that put in light the multiple facets of the notorious composer. His refi-ned and diverse works are present on the soundtracks of various celebrated movies such as Mommy (2014) by Xavier Dolan, Untouchables (2011) by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, as well as This is England (2006) by Shane Meadows.

Nel giardino di Partenope. Sonate napoletane per violoncello

Ten years after the success of the Napolitan cello concertos, accompanied by the Ensemble 415 conducted by Chiara Banchini (Zig Zag Territoires), Gaetano Nasillo comes full circle with this collection of Neapolitan cello sonatas, a worthy sequel to the previous recording. Best known for its contributions to vocal music, Naples was also one of the birthplaces of the modern violoncello: the programme provides a fascinating overview of the Neapolitan repertoire for the instrument from its onset at the end of the 17th century to the second half of the 18th century. It offers a good balance between well-known composers of the Neapolitan School (Pergolesi, Porpora) and less familiar cellist-composers (Alborea, Lan-zetti, Supriani, Pericoli) who established new standards in cello technique that would define the later cello repertoire through these cellists’ successes in France and England.

Viktoriya Dodoka began her musical training in her home city Krasnodar near the Black Sea, later graduating in singing from the Tchaikovsky State Conservatoire in Moscow. She performed lead roles in a number of productions for Moscow Opera, among them Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Vio-letta in La Traviata, Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Marfa in Rimsky-Korsakoff’s The Tsar’s Bride. She sang solo soprano with the Stuttgart Bach Academy Choir in concert performances of Bach’s Magnificat, Hendel’s Nelson Mass and Mozart’s Requiem.Viktoriya immigrated to New Zealand in 2001. She made her New Zealand debut soon after, singing the roles of Olympia /Antonia in Canterbury Opera’s production of The Tales of Hoffman. Some Aucklanders had a preview of Viktoriya Dodoka’s new album this month when the Russian soprano gave a recital in the Town Hall Concert Chamber. On that occasion, a bracket of Rachmani-nov songs, with the supremely unruffled Iola Shelley on piano, was the highlight of the evening. The two women’s Rachmaninov Songs offers about a third of the composer’s output and includes some of his most lyrical outpourings. This CD is a rare treat, recorded by Wayne Laird with his accustomed flair, and one hopes that a second volume is being considered.

When the soldiers of the legendary Maori Battalion sailed for the Second World War, they took with them songs that embodied the love and prayers of those at home. There were hymns, haka, and popular action songs, together with the rousing Maori Battalion March to Victory! These were sung with a style that became part of the Battalion’s legend. Atoll CDs, in association with the Sound Archives of Radio NZ/Nga Taonga Korero and The National Library of New Zealand, is proud to release an historic 2-CD set featuring recordings of the Battalion while it was overseas. These unique recordings were taken ‘live’ on location in the sands of Egypt, during artillery action in North Africa, and in the green valleys of Southern Italy, by the Middle East Recor-ding Unit of New Zealand’s National Broadcasting Service. The recordings captured the raw exuberance and vigour of the performances, and convey something of the drama of the epic events involving the Battalion during WW2.

Carolyn Mills grew up by the banks of the Mississippi River, and began playing the harp at a young age. In her teenage years, she travelled to Boston to further her studies with renowned soloist and teacher, Lucile Lawrence. While gaining a Master’s Degree in performance at Boston University, Caro-lyn became the first ever harpist to win the Boston University Concerto-Aria Competition, debuting in Boston’s beautiful Jordan Hall. She recorded and performed many premieres for the Boston-based Composers in Red Sneakers and her contemporary harp and percussion duo, TALEA, toured America playing numerous works written especially for them.Carolyn became the “the world’s southern-most harpist” when she accepted an engagement as Guest Artists aboard the MV Marco Polo for its 1995-96 Antarctica Voyages.Since she loves to play to the toughest and most critical audiences, she has taken her harp to thou-sands of primary school children in both New Zeland and the US, and has received several grants to take her widely acclaimed School “Informance” Programme to rural communities all over the country.

Anthony Ritchie’s Symphony No.4 was written for the ChristChurch Symphony Orches-tra, and dedicated to “those in ChristChurch who have suffered in the [2010/2011] ear-thquakes”. The work’s principal point of reference is a publication entitled The Way of the Cross, which brought together images of the 14 controversial sculptures that Llew Summers crafted for the ChristChurch Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in 2000, and a collection of poems by Bernadette Hall which are essentially meditative reflections on these sculptures.

CDs from BR-KLASSIK and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks conducted by Peter Dijkstra are regular winners of prestigious awards – two such being the Strauss-Wagner-Mahler re-cording, which won the Diapason d’or, and the Concerto for Choir by Alfred Schnittke, which won the ECHO Klassik. In this latest recording of sacred music by Arvo Pärt, the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks is joined by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester. The two ensembles frequently perform together in their concert series, which regularly include sacred music from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The present CD production focuses on four compo-sitions by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt (born 1935). They were written in 1984, 1990 und 1997 in the composer’s own tintinnabulation style of composition (from the Latin word for the ‘ringing of bells’). In his Te Deum, Pärt makes a conscious departure from the tradi-tionally powerful and festive sound of such precursors as Charpentier, Bruckner and Verdi.

TCHAIKOVSKY, PIOTR ILYICH - Leopold Stokowski. Live from the Proms

Leopold Stokoswki conducted this symphony more often than any other Tchaikovsky symphony and like audiences all over the world, considered it the work of genius that it undoubtedly is. The symphony had received a tremendous ovation from the audience at its premiere, conducted by Tchaikovsky on 5 November 1888. He however considered it somewhat repellent, insincere, and patchy and it was most distressing for him.The reaction of the audience filling the huge Royal Albert Hall, to the magnificent perfor-mance presented by the 91 year-old Stokowski and his young 140-strong international or-chestra on this CD is ample evidence of the love for this noble symphony. The performance was exclusively recorded by Cameo Classics. The rehearsals were also recorded, and illustrate the brevity with which Stokowski was able to instruct the players of many nationalities in order to obtain a performance of such individuality.

In the Middle Ages it retains a large number of compositions of eschatological theme. There were also in the Middle Ages compositions relating to the funeral ritual. It is significant that most of the few musical pieces recoverable of ancient Hispanic liturgy are belonging to the Officium Defunctorum. A varied repertoire of macabre thematic consists of laments, dances of death, responsories and other forms of poetic-musical expressions as antiphons and tropes, are the reflection of the questions that humans have ever made about the afterlife, about the meaning of life and death, and behind of them is opened a gap of fear or hope.

At the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris there exists a very unusual 17th century manuscript of music for solo viola da gamba (lyra viol), known only by its shelf number Réserve 1111. This tiny leather-bound book is elongated and has 270 pages. Compiled by at least eight different individual hands, the music is notated almost entirely in tablature and reflects a variety of scordatura tunings. It was acquired by the Berlin library in 1880 and is generally thought to originate from the Brandenburg region that is part of northern Germany. Near the end of the Thirty Years War, Brandenburg started to regain its prosperity and stability under the leadership of Frederick William, known as the “Great Elector” (reigned 1640-1688). Quite a number of the finest viola da gamba players of the day are known to have visited or spent time there. Frederick William himself played the treble viol. Rés. 1111 has never been published in a facsimile or modern edition. Not only were there a great number of pieces with which to come to grips, but Juliane Laake also had to find some way to organize them into a coherent and presentable narrative. What you hear now is a record of her exploration and sleuthing and discovery.

In his musical aesthetics, Françaix was close to the ‘Groupe des six’ from the outset, and in the connection between cheerfulness and elegance so typical of him to Poulenc in particu-lar. This applies especially to the Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra, written in 1965, which the composer premiered in Maastricht with his daughter Claude on 26 November of the same year. It is not difficult to discern that Françaix was well acquainted with Poulenc’s Double Concerto when he composed his piece. Of the six, the Paris-born Poulenc was pro-bably the ‘most French’. Influenced by Surrealism and Apollinaire, on the one hand, and then to a large degree by Catholicism after roughly the middle of his life, he derived his stylistic elements from the greats of music history – from Mozart to Stravinsky. Most striking is surely the second movement of the concerto representing a dialogue of the composer with Mozart.

Known as a piano teacher, with whose works almost every piano pupil should be familiar and possibly also as a pupil of Beethoven, Carl Czerny enjoys practically no fame as a com-poser today. The composing maniac (round about 800 published works) acquired a great reputation (and wealth) from piano teaching and writing educational works for the piano and compositions the market expected from him and from which he earned a lot of money. At the moment, seven quartets are recorded, four of which were probably intended for publication. Czerny composed in the tradition of Haydn and Beethoven. Echoes of Mendels-sohn can be discerned as well as a romantic style full of drama and profundity of expression. The quartets have only been passed down as manuscripts from Czerny’s estate, which can be found in the archives of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna.

Ludwig Thuille was a comprehensively and multifariously educated musician: a composer, pianist, choir director, singer, music teacher (composition and piano) and music theorist. For until a short time ago Ludwig Thuille was a shadowy figure encountering the reader of yellowed books. The reference to his historical importance as head of the ‘Munich School’ did not mean much, It is only Thuille’s correspondence with Richard Strauss that has kept his erstwhile significance alive. Signs of their friendship were the almost contemporaneous settings of specific poems. DEBUSSY / ADÈS / RAVEL - Sound escapes

It is a plea for the direct experience of a music that had become fed up with the constraints of traditional forms. Debussy’s music especially reveals characteristics that justifiably move it into the proximity of Impressionist painting, as it produces moving paintings, landscapes of sound, soundscapes in the narrowest sense of the word that can draw the listener into the middle of the picture. Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet, completed in 1903, had to be and was compared with Debussy’s quartet. At the same time, it can be seen here how Ravel’s musical diction – based on Debussy’s – prepared the way for French Modernism. Like only few of his colleagues, the Briton Thomas Adès, born in 1971, is capable of fusing traditional elements from music history, including obvious references to existing compositions, with modern sound production into an individual style appealing directly to the listener.

Alfred Schnittke as a composer of film music - that is a fact well known to anyone who has ever been concerned with Alfred Schnittke. However, only very few people are familiar with his actual work in the film music genre. This is all the more surprising since on the one hand, Alfred Schnittke wrote more than 60 film scores during the years between 1961 and 1984, and on the other hand, his poly-stylistic techniques found a nearly perfect equivalent in film. Since Alfred Schnittke suffered from the artistic regimentations like many contempo-rary composers in the USSR, and his works could often only be performed under difficult circumstances, his work for the film to a large extent contributed to his livelihood.

Prokofiev enjoyed relative freedom in the symphonic medium. Symphonies allowed him to create dancing rhythms that need not be strictly danceable, as well as singing melodies beyond the limitations of human vocal chords. He worked on symphonies - a part from ear-lier, unrealized student works - from 1916 until 1952, the year before his death. A complete set of Prokofiev’s symphonies provides a satisfyingly all-encompassing look at the compo-ser’s creativity throughout the years of his mastery.

VON DER VOGELWEIDE, WALTHER - Sangspruch & Minnesang

There is hardly a better representative of medieval poetry - one who internalised the art of verse in a more masterly way than any other - than Walther von der Vogelweide. He is considered one of the most important Minnesänger and Sangspruch (sung speech) poets of the Middle Ages.Poetry was performed as song during this period. Finding melodies for Walther’s poems is a most exciting undertaking, for only a few such melodies have been handed down to us. Sabine Lutzenberger and the ensemble PER-SONAT have underlaid some of Walther’s poems with his own «Tönen» (=melodies), others with music of his contemporaries, com-pleting fragments and reproducing several melodies in the style of the period. German Sangspruch (sung speech), one of most important handed-down traditions together with the Minnesang, functions here as the link between history and living performance practice. The sources extend from the 13th century to the Meistersang. Listeners can now expe-rience Walther’s magnificent poetry sung for the first time on this CD.

Cantilena is an exciting flute and piano duo with a fast-rising reputation; it was founded in 2007 by Odinn Baldvinsson and Patricia Romero, both distinguished performers in their own right. Their repertoire is an eclectic mix of the well-known and the rarely-heard, ranging from Bach and Mozart to Piazzolla and Martinů. The duo has chiefly performed around sou-thern England. Flautist Odinn Baldvinsson made his debut in Reykjavik and has performed in many major London venues, while Patricia Romero made her name with a two-concert performance of Ravel’s complete piano works at the Purcell Room. Their programmes have fascinated and delighted audiences in equal measure. This second album from the duo covers some of the more important works of the French repertoire for the flute, as well as a beautiful Sonata by the Georgian composer Taktakishvili, and concludes with the first recording by flute and piano of Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango.

Bach’s seven solo concertos have survived in a manuscript of around 1737–39, and were presumably designed as vehicles for Bach’s own playing. Originally, the instrument would of course have been a harpsichord; but the concertos have for many years formed part of the repertoire of the piano, and in performances with orchestras of modern instruments the piano provides arguably a better balance than all but the largest (and least authentic) harpsichords. In this new recording of four concertos, the accomplished Maltese pianist Lucia Micallef plays modern piano in a stunning performance with the wonderful EUCO. Lucia has performed in Malta, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic and North Ame-rica. Among many other activities, Lucia is currently one of the artistic directors of the Three Palaces Festival, featuring leading musicians from around the world. This is held at the Pre-sidential Palaces under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Malta.

Three women for whom music was not only an interest and a passion but also an informed choice of profession, carried out with dedication and enthusiasm.Rebecca Clark, was one of the first women to study composition. Her 1921 Trio, one of her best works, blends in sound elements of different origin, which in the final Allegro vigoroso evoke the drive of English folk dances as well as some rhythmic and percussive impulses recalling Bartok. Fame, appreciation and consideration marked the life of Lili Boulanger. Sister to Nadia, she was born into a family of musicians, who recognized and fostered her inborn musical skills. D’un soir triste and D’un matin de printemps, both composed in the spring of 1917 and completed just months prior to her death, are a sort of diptych, as if they were two parts of a single musical idea. The pianist and composer Amy Beach was the first American woman musician of success. She wrote several works in different genres: symphonic, concert, choral, chamber and operatic. The Trio Op.150 belongs to her years of maturity. Despite being written in 1938, the piece is tonal and shows solid writing inspired by late Romanticism. The four vocal compositions of this programme bear witness to Beach’s interest in this repertoire and are significant examples of her song output, which counts over one hundred works and which greatly contributed to the musician’s renown.

BOCCHERINI, LUIGI - Sei Terzettini, Op. 47

Few musicians today possess so much awareness and experience with the music of Luigi Boccherini as Emilio Moreno, or can invest their performances with so much insight. With his ensemble La Real Cámara and for his seventh recording of Boccherini’s music for Glossa, Moreno has now turned to the set of six string trios or Terzettini, Op 47 – scored untypically for Boccherini for violin, viola and cello– written when he was in full maturity both in his compositional activity and in his own skills as a cellist. The year was 1793 and Boccherini turned fifty at the start of it; he had now been working in Madrid for some seven years after the death of his principal patron, the Infante Don Luis de Borbón, remai-ning active as a composer (these Op 47 trios were dedicated to a new patron, the King of Prussia), cellist and conductor of various of the private orchestras then flourishing in the Spanish capital. His style has become tauter and more intense, almost Romantic in its expressiveness.Over the decades Moreno has played chamber works of “Don Luis Boquerini” with many gifted musi-cians. Here, with La Real Cámara, he joins his own viola playing to that of two of his established col-leagues and friends from Japan (the recording was made in Saitama), violinist Natsumi Wakamatsu and cellist Hidemi Suzuki.

Carlo Ipata, inveterate searcher out of unjustly forgotten musical scores, directs Il Bajazet, the impor-tant three-act opera by Francesco Gasparini- which shows marked influences of the Roman Arcadian School of the Baroque. Ipata conducts the orchestra of his own Auser Musici for this new Glossa recording, made in conjunction with performances which took place at last year’s Opera Festival in Barga. The score used is that for the 1719 dramma in musica performed in Reggio Emilia, as updated by Gasparini to accommodate the starry Baroque talents of Francesco Borosini, Antonio Bernacchi, Marianna Bulgarelli and Faustina Bordoni. Their modern-day counterparts in Barga are Leonardo De Lisi (Bajazet), Filippo Mineccia (Tamerlano), Giuseppina Bridelli (Asteria) and Ewa Gubanska (Irene). There is also a cameo role for Raffaele Pe, whose Glossa The Medici Castrato disc was released recently.Like other composers active at the very end of the seventeenth century and the start of the eighteenth, Francesco Gasparini’s music was swept aside by the talented activities of Vivaldi and Porpora (and the influence of Farinelli and Carestini), and of course of Handel, whose score for Tamerlano (the earlier version of Gasparini’s Il Bajazet had been called Tamerlano) reflect very close readings of Gas-parini’s own operas. In her booklet essay Antonella D’Ovidio delves into the history of Gasparini’s Il Bajazet and comments lucidly on the style of this neglected operatic master.

Tanya Ekanayaka is one of Sri Lanka’s foremost pianists and an internationally acclaimed composer. Her ‘deeply autobiographical’ piano compositions, or reinventions, introduce a novel and hybrid musical genre that takes a wide variety of Sri Lankan melodies – ancient, folk and popular – and blends them with motifs inspired by the tonal centres of established classical compositions by Bach, Beethoven, Ravel and others.

Begun in 1909 in the composer’s idyllic Austrian mountain retreat, at a time when Mahler was preoccupied by thoughts of his own mortality, his last completed symphony has been described as his most death-haunted work.Scored for forces which are modest, by Mahlerian standards, this extended work is charac-terized by its unusual construction, often soloistic orchestral writing, evocative use of keys and haunting use of motives and references to traditional Austrian folk dance. This release is a valuable addition to the Hallé canon of great symphonies, including recent releases devoted to Vaughan Williams: Nos 5&8 CD HLL 7533 - Sunday Times Album of the Week and Music Web Recording of the Month; and No 3 CD HLL 7540 – Gramophone Edi-tor’s Choice Feb 2015.Hallé will perform Mahler Symphony No.5 under Elder at the Bridgewater Hall on 19th March and Mahler Symphony No.1 under Markus Stenz, Principal Guest Conductor, in re-peated performances in Manchester and Sheffield in April.

Iranian composer Afshin Jaberi’s powerful music combines 19th century western piano tra-ditions with eastern melodic influences. It is strongly connected with the message of equa-lity and peaceful unity promoted by his religious faith. The Báb Ballades depict dramatic heroism and tragic sacrifice, while the Sonatas express the horrors of war and the fragility of remote cultures, out of which new hope and the chance for reconciliation can emerge.Total time : 73’20

Iannis Xenakis

KUNIKO’s much-anticipated third studio recording features the works of Iannis Xenakis, whose work has had a huge impact within the world of music, and in particular on percussion repertoire. Full of challenges, from the pioneering mathematical influences, to unusual notation and virtuosic perfor-mance requirements, many classify Xenakis’ compositions as unplayable, but KUNIKO’s unrivalled prowess sees her perfectly realise the composer’s vision.KUNIKO gave the world premiere of Project IX at the Japan Society in New York in 2014. Pléïades explores a rich variety of percussive sounds and textures; marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, xylo-marimba and drums create a sound world of rhythmic complexity and vibrant colours. Uniquely, Pléïades also requires a SIXXEN, an instrument designed by Xenakis and customised by KUNIKO, who hand-selected 120 metal bars to craft the perfect sound. Since becoming a percussion soloist, Rebonds is a piece that KUNIKO has been playing and performing throughout her entire career. After hearing this performance of Xenakis’ popular piece, renowned percussionist Sylvio Gualda congratu-lated KUNIKO on her ‘marvellous’ interpretation.

Born in Budapest on 4 May 1905, Seiber began to learn the cello at the age of ten. He stu-died composition at the Budapest Academy of Music under Kodály from 1919 to 1924. In 1925 he entered his Serenade for wind sextet in a Budapest competition and when it failed to win the prize, Bartók resigned from the jury in protest. In 1935 Seiber settled in London, where he founded the Dorian Singers and helped Francis Chagrin to found the Society for the Promotion of New Music. He taught at Morley College and privately and his pupils included Don Banks, Peter Racine Fricker, Anthony Gilbert, Mal-colm Lipkin, David Lumsdaine, Anthony Milner and Hugh Wood. Seiber stayed in touch with continental musical developments and frequently attended the International Society for Contemporary Music’s festivals, several of which featured his own compositions. On 24 Sep-tember 1960, at the age of 55, he was killed in a car crash in South Africa during a lecturing tour of the country’s universities. At the time of his tragically early death, Seiber was one of the most respected teachers of composition in Britain.

Firma Melodiya presents an album of the remarkable Russian pianist Dmitri Bashkirov. After Bashkirov graduated the Moscow Conservatory, he received the first prize of the Long-Thi-bault International Competition in Paris. Combining impeccable technical virtuosity with emotional depth, brilliant artistry with the skill of a dramatist performer, he mastered an extensive concert repertoire and spent a lot of time in studio as well recording for Melodiya and later for the biggest European labels. Bashkirov played music of the romantic compo-sers and French impressionists with particular inspiration, but his interpretations of Pro-kofiev were also especially impressive, and the classical harmonies of Haydn and Mozart were followed by sonorous energy of Rachmaninoff and sharp distinctness of Shchedrin. The album includes recordings of works of Haydn, Schubert, Brahms, Liszt, Grieg, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Shchedrin made by Dmitri Bashkirov in 1957 to 1972.

Firma Melodiya presents a collection of selected symphonies by Moisey Weinberg. Wein-berg’s vivid composing individuality, which combined elements of Jewish, Polish and Rus-sian national cultures, allows us to speak about him as one of the most significant pheno-mena of domestic music of the second half of the 20th century. This collection features Symphonies Nos 5 and 10 composed during the period of the composer’s most intensive creative activity in 1960s. A Fifth Symphony is philosophical and deep with wealth of slow tempos. The Tenth Symphony became one of the composer’s creative peaks. Old genres and forms are organically combined here with music techniques of the 20th century. The outstanding Soviet conductors Kirill Kondrashin and Rudolf Barshai played a significant part in popularizing Weinberg’s works. Many of Weinberg’s composition were performed for the first time by the orchestras founded by the two conductors – the Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. The Fifth Sym-phony was recorded by Kondrashin in 1975, and the Tenth one by Barshai in 1970.

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of Arif Melikov’s Legend of Love, one of the most outstanding works of Soviet ballet theatre. Legend of Love (1958–1961) was one of the first large-scale works written by the 28-year-old composer, but it was this ballet that brought him worldwide fame. The ballet was commissioned by the Kirov (now Mariinsky) Opera and Ballet Theatre and created in close collaboration with its co-authors – choreographer Yuri Grigorovich, librettist Nâzım Hikmet, set designer Semyon Virsaladze and conductor Niyazi. Following a triumphant premiere in 1961 in Leningrad, Legend of Love was produced at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre and then staged at many theatres of the USSR, Europe and the world. The popularity of the ballet based on the Persian legend Khosrow and Shirin about tragic love and self-sacrifice has not waned. The recording was made by the Big Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio and Central Television of the USSR conducted by young Valery Gergiev in 1988.

Leopold Stokowski with The All-American Youth Orchestra and The Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra

Stokowski formed the All-American Youth Orchestra in 1940, its players’ ages ranging from 18 to 25. He sought to combat Nazi propaganda touting the wonders of Hitler youth with an artistic statement from young emissaries of the free world. The AAYO toured South America in 1940 and North America in 1941 and was met with rave reviews. These performances boast a unique combination of past and future: the wisdom of Stokowski’s vast experience allied with the pure, undiminished idealism of youth. In 1945, Stokowski founded the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra. The items included here, the only ones that had not been re-circulated on commercial CDs until now, are all brief, and for the most part within a range of varying degrees of lightness in content. Beau-tifully restored by Mark Obert-Thorn with liner notes by Richard Freed.

The 33 Variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli, Op. 120, commonly known as the Diabelli Variations, is a set of variations for the piano written between 1819 and 1823 by Ludwig van Beethoven on a waltz composed by Anton Diabelli. It is often considered to be one of the greatest sets of variations for keyboard along with J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations.NICK VAN BLOSS’s early musical training began as a chorister at Westminster Abbey and was followed by studies at the Royal College of Music with Yonty Solomon. In 1994, aged 26, Nick van Bloss played a televised recital in Poland at the Chopin Festival. This proved to be his last public appearance before he retired from playing completely for 15 years. In April 2009, van Bloss made a ‘comeback’ concert at London’s Cadogan Hall, playing a concerto by Bach and Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto with the English Chamber Orchestra. The concert, uniformly reviewed as a ‘Triumph’ by London’s critics, attracted massive media interest from all over the globe. Since then, Nick van Bloss has performed in the United States, Japan, Sweden, Austria, with the English Chamber Orchestra, and conducted concertos from the keyboard. His recording schedule, as part of a long-term relationship with Nim-bus Records, will include Beethoven’s ‘Diabelli Variations’ and selected Sonatas, a CD of Sonatas by Mozart, and a recording of several Piano Concertos by Mozart with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, directed by van Bloss from the piano. A feature film about his life is currently in development.

Ondine releases the world premiere recording of Veli-Matti Puumala’s (b. 1965) opera Anna Liisa. The libretto of Anna Liisa is an adaptation by the composer based on a natural- ist play by the Finnish writer Minna Canth (1844–1897). Canth’s popular play describes the tragedy of Anna Liisa, caught between the norms of the sur- rounding society and her own moral conscience. Veli-Matti Puumala explores the potential of music from fresh and innovative perspectives. His music is characterised by a clash of intense and energetic textures with quiet landscapes with a quite different timescale.Puumala started making sketches to his opera already in 1997, but the l opera had to wait its long-awaited premiere until 2008 when it was included in the programme of the Helsinki Festival.Puumala, a pupil of Paavo Heininen and Franco Donatoni, has won Prix Italia in 2001 and in 2005 his Piano Concerto Seeds of Time was awarded with the Finnish Teosto Prize. Puumala has been Professor of Composition at the Sibe- lius Academy since 2005.Puumala’s opera features several well-known Finnish opera artists, including Helena Juntu-nen and Jorma Hynninen. Conductor Hannu Lintu and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra are offering a full program of classic orchestral works by Jean Sibelius (1865–1957).Lemminkäinen is a large and fascinating orchestral work in four movements based on the Finnish Ka-levala epic. Originally completed in 1895 the work has a unique position in Sibelius’ oeuvre: Sibelius never came closer to the very core of Symbolism than in the misty moods, swan motifs and macabre features of Lemminkäinen. It also includes one of Sibelius’ most well-known orchestral pieces, The Swan of Tuonela. Written before the 1st Symphony, it is also noteworthy that Lemminkäinenlacks nothing of a symphony. Sibelius was not totally satisfied with the work, but withdrew the work soon after its premiere until it was heard again in 1935. However, in his late years Sibelius did not even totally reject the idea of calling Lemminkäinen as ‘a symphony’. Pohjola’s Daughter (Pohjolan tytär), completed in 1906, is among Sibelius’ final orchestral pieces directly linked to the Kalevalaepic in his transition from National Romanticism towards a more Clas-sical idiom.

The violinist Gunar Letzbor is an established specialist in performing Austrian baroque mu-sic; in particular, he has especially intensively grappled with works of Biber, Muffat and Schmelzer, to name three examples. In so doing, he is constantly searching for a specifi-cally Austrian baroque string sound. Manuscript XIV 726 of the Minoritenkonvent in Vienna is one of the most important sources of Austrian baroque music. From the over hundred sonatas contained in it, Gunar Letzbor has compiled the series «ex Vienna» consisting of three programmes which shed light on various aspects of Austrian violin music. On this, the second CD of the series – Scordato – Gunar Letzbor has recorded violin works in which the instrument must be retuned, thus sounding in scordatura – a practice that was initially invented by violinists of lower social strata but also spread to the area of art music.

“Schubert (re)inventions” has both ensemble paladino’s unique view on works by Schu-bert (“Arpeggione” Sonata and 18 Lieder) and Schubert’s (re)invented version of Matiegka’s “Notturno” for guitar, flute, viola and cello. Guitarist Alberto Mesirca has curated an inspi-red double CD of some of Schubert’s immortal gems of Biedermeier chamber music, Lieder and transcriptions.Total time : 132’52

Eugen d´Albert was born in Glasgow in 1864 as the son of a Frenchman and an Englishwo-man. Whilst still a child, he attracted much attention for his exceptional pianistic talent; his musical career was influenced by Brahms and Liszt. As a composer, too, d’Albert made a name for himself early on through the great success of his opera Tiefland (1903/05). He was never really able to consolidate his position in this genre, however, for his contemporaries tended to see the great pianist in him instead – a fate shared with him by a number of other «double talents».Although his compositional oeuvre is forgotten for the most part today, it is worth taking a look at his works, for the orchestral compositions and concertos offer interesting insights. This CD presents the greater part of d‘Albert’s orchestral production with the two Piano Concertos, the Cello Concerto and his only Symphony. The influence of his models Brahms and Liszt can be readily heard, but d’Albert’s own style – a nearly ideal combination of vir-tuosity, romantic melodiousness and sharp flavour – is always recognisable.

Retrospective

ALFEYEV, HILARION - De Profundis

Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev is one of the most widely performed of all living Russian composers. Each of his new compositions constitutes a milestone in contemporary musical history. His ability to imbue his music with profound religious content, to unite diverse cultures and styles, to invent new ways of musical expression while remaining faithful to the centuries-old classical tradition, and to utter most profound themes using a simple and comprehensible musical language, singles him out among present-day composers. His most widely performed work, the St Matthew Passion (2006), has received worldwide recognition. Following its premiere in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conser-vatory in March 2007, it has been performed more than seventy times in different countries by the most distinguished soloists, choirs and orchestras. Invariably it receives standing ovations from au-diences at each concert. This SACD features five works by Metropolitan Hilarion that were produced over a thirty-year period and performed by the excellent Russian National Orchestra. As the first Russian orchestra to ever win a Grammy award, the orchestra demonstrates a superior performance in this recording. As The Moscow Times once positioned it, “RNO played with a power, beauty and finesse currently unmatched by any other Moscow orchestra”.

It is hard to escape the incredible pull of Symphony No. 7, knowing the background to its composition and its general significance. Shostakovich began to work on the actual composition in July 1941 in Leningrad, where he wrote the first three movements under constant attack from the enemy; and after his evacuation from the city besieged by Ger-man troops, he completed the Finale and the instrumentation in Kuibyschev in December 1941.This outstanding work achieves its true dimensions thanks to the sophisticated and polished conductor Paavo Järvi conducting the Russian National Orchestra in this recording. Needless to say he elevates the composition to an even higher level. The round and open sound of PENTATONE’s multichannel recording on SACD assures an honest yet captivating listening experience.

PENTATONE is proud to present Anton Bruckner’s complete symphonies recorded with PEN-TATONE’s January-July 2015 Orchestra of the Season, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and conductor Marek Janowski. This is a set with nothing less than a stellar sound and stunnin-gly consistent performances throughout all symphonies. Marek Janowski achieves a clarityand balance of sound from the whole orchestra It was not only his observant reading of these works or and the invigorating performance by the orchestra that achieved this sound; the magnificent acoustics of Victoria Hall in Geneva (where the orchestra is based and also where the recordings took place) did wonders for Bruckner’s works. As far as interpreta-tions go, Janowski knows his Bruckner and he takes the orchestra to a higher level.

RED PRIEST is the only early music group in the world to have been compared in the press to the Rolling Stones, Jackson Pollock, the Marx Brothers, Spike Jones and the Cirque du Soleil. This extraordinary acoustic foursome has been described by music critics as ‘visionary and heretical’, ‘outrageous yet compulsive’, ‘wholly irreverent and highly enlightened’, ‘comple-tely wild and deeply imaginative’, with a ‘red-hot wicked sense of humour’ and a ‘break-all-rules, rock- chamber concert approach to early music.’Founded in 1997, and named after the flame haired priest, Antonio Vivaldi, Red Priest has given over a thousand concerts in many of the world’s most prestigious festivals, inclu-ding the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Moscow December Nights Festival, Schwetzingen Festival, Prague Spring Festival, Bermuda Festival, and in most European countries, Japan, Australia, and throughout North and Central America. The group has been the subject of hour-long TV profiles for NHK (Japan) and ITV (UK) – the latter for the prestigious South Bank Show, which documented the launch of the Red Hot Baroque Show, an electrifying marriage of old music with the latest light and video technology.

In addition to the works attributed to the lutenists active at the Royal Polish court in the late sixteenth century, there is a substantial repertoire of compositions identified as ‘Polish dances’ or ‘Polish songs’ which have been preserved in numerous sources of late Renais-sance lute music. Characterized by an irresistible melodic charm and a straightforward har-monic and rhythmical texture, such musical polonica spread across Europe, achieving what might have been the widest distribution of musical ‘Polishness’ before Chopin. Four hun-dred years later, Polish lutenist Michal Gondko sets out to trace polonica in lute tablatures from around 1600, and presents a selection of forty compositions, many of which have not been previously recorded.

This is the definitive double-CD selection of the very best of the remarkable Mills Brothers, the most popular male close-harmony group in music history. Paper Doll is our Retrospective tribute, released to celebrate the centenary of the youngest of the brothers, Donald.Over their remarkable career, The Mills Brothers made, it is estimated, more than two thousand recordings, with combined sales of over 50 million copies. They had a unique style and were uniquely successful, combining as they did the best elements of vaudeville, Negro minstrelsy, barbershop and jazz. In addition, their ‘trademark’ of vocalising instrumental effects was a sensational novelty.Paper Doll is a compendium of all their major hits since they burst onto the scene in 1931 with Tiger Rag. Countless smashes (there are actually 36 chart successes here!) include such million-sellers as the title track, You Always Hurt The One You Love and their final No.1, The Glow Worm (1952).The fun is only increased by eight delightful duets in which the brothers are joined by Louis Arms-trong (Cherry), Bing Crosby (Dinah), Ella Fitzgerald (Dedicated To You) and Al Jolson (Is It True What They Say About Dixie?).

The Parisian Symphony

It was at Le Concert Spirituel that the Germanic-style symphony made its appearance in Paris. This story began in the 1750s with the arrival of musicians from Mannheim, including Johann Stamitz, in the French capital. Subsequently, various composers such as the Belgian François-Joseph Gossec appeared as the creators of the earliest French symphonies before Haydn’s symphonies enjoyed a very particular success there. This set, released on the occa-sion of the 20th anniversary of Les Agrémens, takes up most of the recordings conducted by Guy Van Waas in a repertoire bringing together composers played in Paris at the end of the 18th century (Gossec, Grétry, Haydn, Krauss), and announcing the beginnings of the Romantic symphony with two recording premieres: a symphony by Hérold and Beethoven’s Second Symphony.

Bonaventura Rubino was one of the protagonists of the musical life of Palermo, where he was Kapellmeister in the Cathedral for more than twenty-five years. In Palermo, Rubino found a stimulating environment, to which he adjusted very easily, soon becoming one of its most admired and appreciated musicians. Bonaventura Rubino’s Missa de Morti (Requiem Mass) is presented here within the liturgical and musical context that is peculiar to this friar from Bergamo. In the Mass, the polyphonic sections for voices and basso continuo alternate with the liturgical monodies of the ancient Roman rite, in keeping with the melodic and tex-tual codification of St. Pius V’s Missal and the Medicean Gradual. This seemed necessary to us not so much for abstract philological reasons as because we aim to make it possible for present-day listeners (who are mostly lacking in experience in this area) to enjoy this extra-ordinary seventeenth-century music within the setting of the complex “event” that origina-ted it and for which it was conceived. The recording of this Mass was carried out in several points of the church, in order to give the listener the physical sensation of the various spots where the ceremony was taking place and the music was being performed.

Among the thirteen oratorios by Giovanni Paolo Colonna, more than half are connected, by their origin or at least by tradition, to the court of Francesco II d’Este. Although in the early modern period the sacredness of monarchy was indisputable, we cannot take it for granted that an oratorio – unlike an opera, as was usually the case – was offered to a monarch in order to praise him unconditionally. In many oratorio librettos, the monarch and spectator (who was also the patron and dedicatee) was actually confronted with the perils of his role, the faults of his predecessors, the renunciation of his personal freedom, and the momen-tousness of his office, over which God’s will and Christ’s model loomed. So while operas were often an instrument of applause, oratorios were often an instrument of admonition. This last aspect is fully expressed in L’Assalonne, drawn from the Second Book of Samuel in the biblical Old Testament.

A real rarity is offered to us by this album that includes original works for plectrum orchestra, mea-ning that particular ensemble in which the various orchestral sections are formed by mandolins and instruments derived from it, such as the mandola, the mandoloncello and mandolone, with the addition of guitars, harps, and other plectrum or pizzicato instruments depending on the various situations. After the time when great composers like Vivaldi, Mozart and Beethoven wrote important pages where the mandolin was the protagonist, from the first decade of the XIX century interest in this instrument progressively diminished. Yet, starting from the second half of the nineteenth cen-tury, throughout Europe spontaneously started many ensembles for plectrum and pizzicato. After more than a century from their composition, this production wants to propose some suggestive pages of the most representative authors gravitating around Florence, the city that in the XIX century opened the doors to the golden age of the revival of mandolin in Italy and worldwide. Founded in 1898, the Gino Neri orchestra was the star of that period of splendor, and now represents the oldest plectrum orchestra still preserving and disseminating this repertoire worldwide.

Within this CD is brought to light a completely forgotten composer, the priest Pietro Porfiri from Marche. Very little is known about him, and the works included in this album are taken from a collection of secular cantatas he published in 1692, just at the time when this kind of music was widespread by publishers all over Europe, particularly in Italy. The beautiful voices of soprano Pamela Lucciarini and countertenor Alessandro Carmignani bring to light an unexpected musical writing, where Porfiri demonstrates a mastery of style, in search of innovative solutions extremely audacious for its time. The basso continuo is by the period instruments ensemble, Laboratorio Armonico, featuring highly skilled early music artists.

Three composers, Tedeschi, Galeotti and Mortari, with three completely different musical styles: what they share is the sound of the harp and the rediscovery of its Italian reper-tory, which is mostly still unknown, or very nearly so. The history of the pedal harp in Italy presumably began with Leonardo Primavera (1740-1802), an obscure character who was mentioned for the first time, as a soloist and teacher, by Blanda Bagatti in her book Arpa e arpisti (Piacenza, 1932) and later by Rosario Profeta in his Storia e letteratura degli strumen-ti musicali (Florence, 1942). Primavera’s pupils almost certainly included Giuseppe Andreoli (1757-1830) and Curzio Marcucci (1775-1842). where he educated an entire generation of harpists, including some of the most important musicians on the European scene, such as his son Ferdinando (1800-1871), Filippo Scotti (1790-1868), and Angelo Bovio (1824-1909).

BOSSI, MARCO ENRICO - Complete Four-Hands Piano Works

This CD includes the world premiere recording of Marco Enrico Bossi complete works for piano four hands.Marco Enrico Bossi, the greatest organist of his time, was a great tea-cher, highly inspired composer, appreciated Director of Conservatories of Venice, Bologna and Rome, great conductor, he played the violin and was an excellent pianist. As shown and evident in the seven waltz of the Suite de Valses op. 93 and the transcription of the magnificent Suite for Large Orchestra op. 126, while maintaining an original mark, Bossi compositions for four hands seem to be inspired by Brahms and by the Hamburg chamber music transplanted in Vienna. Borganti and Giurato have used original editions and manus-cripts, revising and correcting them even by comparing the transcriptions to the scores for orchestra.

We study the ancient masters, not because they are ancient, but because they are new: this was written at the end of the nineteenth century by Luigi Torchi, one of the fathers of Italian musicology. The manly voice of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, the supremely divine Claudio Monteverdi and, above all, the sublime Girolamo Frescobaldi inspired the “musical Renaissance” that exalted the Italian genius and its fruitful artistic nature, not without a tinge of nationalism. Among the many musicians who engaged in the rediscovery and divul-gation of the masters of the past, the most notable were the organist Marco Enrico Bossi, the violinist Mario Corti, the pianists Felice Boghen and Mario Vitali, and the composer Ot-torino Respighi. From the ancient masters, Italians drew inspiration also for experimenting with new musical languages imbued with a neoclassical taste, following Giuseppe Verdi’s memorable words: return to the old and you will be progressing.

Gino Gorini, pianist and composer, was a pupil of Gino Tagliapietra and, from 1934 to 1940, of Gian Francesco Malipiero. Tagliapietra was an inheritor of the monumental piano style of Ferruccio Busoni and Egon Petri, who had updated the philosophy of musical performance by criticising late-romantic liberties. Gorini admired him as a virtuoso rather than as a performer, because he did not like his ardent expressiveness and disagreed with personality cult: the latter was largely rejected by the new pianists who were close to modern composition. Gino Gorini was a neoclassical pianist; his objec-tive notion of performance, his anti-romantic attitude and his non-exhibitionistic virtuosity reflected Malipiero’s ideas. He was open to all repertories, even beyond the historical twentieth century. Malipiero appreciated the outstanding variety of his programmes, so much so that he used to say, “Stars are forced, in order to keep their clientele, always to perform the same music for the same public,” as an indirect ac-knowledgement of the value of his pupil’s musical choices. There was no distinction between Gorini the performer and Gorini the composer: the two activities were interdependent.

Jacques Ibert is one of the great ‘picture makers’ of French music. Here are two examples of this, and they are also two world premiere recordings on disc. Ibert it is true had conducted Les Amours de Jupiter, but it was not a complete performance. As for Le Chevalier errant, the suite receives here its first recording. Le Chevalier errant — ‘the wandering knight’ — is of course Don Quixote. In a radio interview in April 1954 Ibert explained that the character of Don Quixote “[…] was conceived not as he usually is, with a little beard, a barber’s bowl on his head and an hallucinatory air, but as he sees himself in the course of the adventures he lives so intensely”. Hence a musical translation that avoids cliché and is both forceful and poetic.Les Amours de Jupiter: a grand ballet, divided up into so many conquests of the master of Olympus: Europa, Leda, Danaë, Ganymede, before the return of Juno to the conjugal bed. This all takes place to the whirl and swirl of a virtuoso orchestra. The latest disc of the Orchestre National de Lorraine and Jacques Mercier has been inundated with awards (notably the ‘Diapason d’or’ of the year, and the ‘Choc’ of the year from Le Monde de la Musique). This will undoubtedly delight all lovers of the symphony orchestra.

Wolfango Dalla Vecchia certainly is an artist that needs to be rediscovered: composer, philo-sopher, organist, musicologist and lecturer. Within his vast production including genres like vocal, choral, chamber and instrumental (until the computer music), this extract of sacred works is undoubtedly the part he cared the most about. His great Christian faith and aware-ness that art is the main mean to bring the man to the understanding and love of God are the essence of his music, performed in this recording by a team of musicians who worked with him until his death.

Xenakis: a long story with Timpani. The five discs of orchestral works recorded with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg linger in the memory... and they are still in the catalogue. But was that to be all? Stéphanos Thomopoulos — whose first commercial disc this is — does not just share a common origin with Xenakis. He is also the first pianist to be the holder of a doctorate in performance, and has become with his lectures the exegete of Xenakis’ music. As he says of the composer: “Xenakis’ personal itinerary is also marked by difference and by the struggle to advance. Continual displacement, war, wounding, exile, being a stranger everywhere. In Greece, in France. With architects, with musicians.Wanting constantly to show it is possible to do things differently. Open doors that are her-metically sealed. Provoke spectacular genesis. The music of Xenakis is inhabited by this tension. It can appear cruel, wild, brutal. Yet, is there ever birth without upheaval? Without pain? Without a struggle?”.

BOCCHERINI, LUIGI - Cello Concerto G 480, Quintettes G 451,G 436, Sextet G 463

This recording follows a first collaboration between Zig-Zag Territoires and Marco Ceccato (Vivaldi sonatas), widely hailed by the press. It is devoted to two important aspects of Luigi Bocherini’s work: chamber music and the cello, of which he was a great virtuoso. The two quintets and the divertimento feature the combination of the string quar- tet – of which Boccherini was, in a way, the co-founder with Haydn) –sometimes with the guitar, sometimes with the flute having place of honour, and always with a delightful use of those instruments’ sound capabilities. And, of course, the cello is then to the fore in the Concerto in G major, a summary of virtuosity and lyricism.

The skyscraper style. This is the image that comes up when one listens to the performance of pianist, composer and arranger Sergey Zhilin and his trio. Sergey Zhilin absorbed many achievements of world pianism: he learned a lot from Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner and Art Tatum, all of this mixed with a solid foundation of Russian piano music (Sergey Rachmani-noff). Zhilin possesses a variety of skills and techniques from powerful large-scale elements (octave and chord passages) to exquisite small-scale vignettes. The program of Sergey Zhilin’s trio titled Tchaikovsky in Jazz. The Seasons (Yury Markin’s arrangement) demonstrates that the idea of “classic music in jazz” is still alive and capable to produce unexpected results. In this project, everything new and unusual is generated as if from the inside of the music. A new harmonization of Tchaikovsky’s themes becomes possible with the help of harmonious language of late romanticism and music of the 20th century enriched by jazz culture and not because the musicians are just using standard jazz chords.

The Big Screen trio joyfully explores the worlds of stage and screen, swinging through a selection of timeless melodies which enjoy universal appeal. A heavyweight of British jazz, pianist David Newton is joined for this project by Tom Farmer (from Empirical), who has a contemporary approach to bass playing, and Matt Skelton, whose virtuoso drum skills keeps everything moving nicely. David Newton has always thrived on playing material that brings new challenges to his improvisation and he has gone out of his way to do so for this new trio. There is an emotional and visceral joy when hearing these tunes rendered with the care, intellect, passion and excellence that Big Screen bring to the music. The impressive line-up of Big Screen play the music with a finelytuned sense of taste and swing.Opening with a playful rendition of the small-screen theme ‘Bewitched’, most of the action takes place on the big screen with ‘Heather On The Hill’ conjuring up images of Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, whilst Toy Story 2’s ‘When Somebody Loved Me’ is haunting in its stark simplicity. From My Fair Lady, ‘Get Me To The Church On Time’ features a spectacularly successful conjuring of Oscar Peterson and Keith Jarrett whilst ‘On The Street Where You Live’ is straight-ahead swing.

«Heliocentric Counterblast takes Sun Ra’s music as a platform with which to go their own musical direction, combining various elements of the jazz-tradition, such as oldtime-swing with free-jazz. Tunes from the cosmic universe of Sun Ra are difficult to cover. Only those who use them as a launch pad for their own explorations will be able to follow their own orbit. This is precisely the principal idea of Berlin saxophonist Kathrin Lemke, who with her band dives into Sun Ra’s curious and wonderful mixture of the swing tradition and free-spi-ritedness in a completely unacademic way. So they didn’t pick the name of the band from a hat. Bossa Nova is the jump-off point for Hotel Bossa Nova, the jazz quartet from Germany founded nine years ago. Liza da Costa (voice), Tilmann Höhn (guitar), Alexander Sonntag (double bass) and Wolfgang Stamm (drums and percussion) ven-ture along the most varied musical paths of Latin Jazz, which they continually open up in new fields with their own fusion compositions. Hear them live, with Liza da Costa radiating pure joy, together with the band’s irresistible improvisations and you will understand why these virtuoso musicians are so applauded on stage and esteemed by the critics.Of their last four albums, Hotel Bossa Nova „Desordem e Progresso“ (Turbulence and Progress) is the most free-wheeling to date. In contrast to the more ballad-bound „Na Meia Luz“, with primarily classically constructed songs from the broad palette of Bossa Nova, the band breaks out here with an astonishing love for adventure, with brilliant forays in tempo and path forging innovation. Whether they are mini-songs that occurred on the spot in the studio, or complex, style transcending compo-sitions full of ease and passion, this new album from Hotel Bossa Nova has ignited a fusion fireworks of Jazz-World-Music in a class of its own. In the recent past, there have been very few cases of musicians filling in on short notice for more famous colleagues who became ill and – like David Gazarov – immediately became stars themselves. The story began in October 2011 after a performance by Jacques Loussier had to be canceled on very short notice. After a rehearsal of a mere 90 minutes, David Gazarov delighted the Loussier fans. Critics spoke of “a worthy successor…”. The subsequent concerts at the Berlin Philharmonic, in Hamburg, Hannover, Bremen and Stuttgart confirmed and enhanced his success. The critic rhapsodized about Gazarov’s delicacy, strength, virtuosity and innovative power, writing, “The best thing to do is to give up trying to understand his music and simply enjoy it…the audience at the Funkhaus can be certain that they met a future star at this event.”David Gazarov is “not only a crossover specialist, but a virtuoso, full-blooded jazz musician as well”. “Under the title BACHOLOGY, he demonstrated how far the art of piano improvisation surrounding Bach’s works can go in the 21st century. First, he played the entire piece almost in the original ver-sion, changing the harmonics only slightly. Then, he took just a few bars of the primary motif and made it into a bebop lasting nearly ten minutes, subsequently demonstrating the richness of jazz harmonics and rhythm according to the classic principle of the theme with variations.

Jimi Tenor and Kalle Kalima have made music together for about 10 years and now they are breaking ground in a trio format with Joonas Riippa on drums. The music is dark and jazzy but danceable and suddenly you hear a hounting ballad. Moments later it could be inspired by Sun Ra meeting Kraftwerk.Jimi Tenor has never settled for the traditional role of a pop artist. He is known as a musician whose work lies beyond current trends although he has written great hits like «Take me Baby». He is at home in front of the crowd gone wild, wearing a glittering self-designed costume and a flowing cape, holding a noise-producing device the main components of which are walkman made in Hong Kong and an East-German bicycle dynamo. Kalle Kalima is the ambassador of Finnish Jazz and Avantgarde music in Berlin. He mixes elements of jazz and rock in unique way. He won the Finnish «»Grammy»» for the best Jazz album with the group «»K-18»» in 2013.Joonas Riippa is one of the most important drummers in Finland today working with many renovated musicians like Mikko Innanen, Verneri Pohjola, Teemu Viinikainen, Seppo Kantonen and Joonatan Rautio.

HONEGGER, ARTHUR - Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher

MARION COTILLARD AT THE STAKE IN THE ROLE OF JOAN OF ARCJeanne d’Arc au Bûcher, written by the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger in 1938, is a fascinating oratorio.

VERDI, GIUSEPPE - Macbeth

This score undoubtedly marks an important turning point in Verdi’s operatic writing, because it brings to the foreground the characters’ introspective, psychological aspect, which would be the fundamental feature of most of the maestro’s later creations. This DVD recording documents the production staged at Novara’s Teatro Coccia during the 2013-2014 season, with Dario Argento tackling for the first time the direction of an opera. Verdi’s masterpiece was not new to the director from Rome, who had used it as backdrop for his 1987 film Opera, set at the Teatro Regio in Parma, indeed during a staging of Macbeth. From the master of thriller and horror one could only expect a direction n line with his previous film-making background, and from that point of view, this Macbeth does not fail expectations, with its bloody, indeed gory scenes; they are, at any rate, consistent with the dark and brutal charac-ter of Shakespeare’s tragedy. But aside from all of that, Dario Argento’s direction reveals extraordinarily theatrical qualities, greatly enhanced by the conducting of Giuseppe Sabbatini who, on the podium, takes tempos that befit to perfection the unrolling of the drama

The mythological figure of Prometheus symbolises the creativity of man – and Claudio Abbado took this symbol as the Leitmotif of this very unique concert recording: An exploration of the Prometheus myth through the works of four composers, evocatively visualized by television director Christopher Swann, known for directing Leonard Bernstein conducts West Side Story among others. The concert was a giant collaboration of the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Berliner Singaka-demie, the Solistenchor Freiburg and the vocal soloists Ingrid Ade-Jeseman and Monika Bair-Ivenz and speakers Ulrike Krumbiegel and Matthias Schadock.

This recording provides us with a portrait of a man whose conducting technique contrasts fascinatingly with that of the other conductors in our In Rehearsal & Performance series. Sir Georg Solti’s rehearsal and performance of Wagner’s Tann-häuser Overture with the Sudfünk - Sinfonieorchester is a fine illustration of this conductor’s insistence on absolute preci-sion, his energetic style and his close familiarity with the score. These rehearsals are complemented wonderfully by the com-plete performances of the works.

BATTISTELLI / MATCOVICH - Experimentum Mundi. An experimental Opera

Experimentum Mundi is arguably the most important world in the field of contemporary music in recent decades. In one fell swoop, Giorgio Battistelli’s pioneering work has fulfilled all the artistic aspirations and dreams of his century. In the wake of his various attempts to bridge the gap between life and art, he has ultimately managed to achieve this is his hour-long musical work. The timbral, rhythmic and harmonic variations, created with ‘instruments’ from everyday life, make this work a unique, unforgettable experience.

MOZART / SCHUBERT / STRAVINSKY - Piano Duos

Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim are not only fellow countrymen: they also both began to give concerts in their youth, as soloists and with an orchestra. In addition the two have a particular interest in chamber music in common - the repertoire spanning from the classics to modernism. This sum-mit meeting of two of the most eminent pianists of the past few decades and of the present, is something well worth loo-king forward to.
