Gary Christensen went for a walk in late April hoping to takes pic-tures of wildflowers in the desert around St. George. He came acrossthis Gila monster in a wash not far from the Arizona state line. Chris-tensen says he spends a lot of time hiking in the desert and this wasonly the second time in 40 years that he has seen one. Seeing one inthe wild twice in a lifetime is amazing. Catharus guttatus

The hermit thrush is theonly member of its genus thatspends the winter in NorthAmerica. Like the robin, itswitches its diet from inver-tebrates in summer to insectsand fruit in winter. While eat-ing my own breakfast thismorning on the backyard pa-tio, I enjoyed watching a her-mit thrush picking up wormsand other invertebrates fromunder the litter of the mulchin the garden.

It is a medium-sized thrushat 6 inches with a brown backand reddish tail. The chest hasblack spots. The eye shows athin white eye ring. A behav-ior to note in the field is thequick cocking up and slowlowering motion of its tailwhile it flicks its wings.

The hermit thrush is of-ten heard before being seen. Its song is a delightful melo-dious, warbling flutelike song.

It is a niche bird, locatingsuitable habitat that is sand-wiched between the Swain-son's thrush at higher eleva-tions and the veery at lowerelevations in the eastern Ap-palachians where I grew up inPennsylvania. Eastern hermitthrush are ground nesters, while here in the West theyusually nest in trees.

They breed from south-ern Alaska through Canada, southward to northeasternstates and into the Appala-chians, and in West south-ward to southern Arizona.Their wintering grounds are

from southern Arizona tosouthern Missouri and Con-necticut, southward to theGulf of Mexico and throughMexico to El Salvador.

The favorite habitat of thehermit thrush is deciduous, mixed and coniferous forest. It is an edge bird. Winter isspent in woody growth, openwoodland groves where it hasmoist and dense cover. Here,it forages on the ground, dig-ging in leaf litter.
