Very low sounds, the lowest part of the musical range.

The second highest part of the musical range.

The highest part of the musical range.

Pentatonic harmonies are gentle and soothing, a five note music scale within one octave with no semitones. The nature of the scale means that it is impossible to make any real harmonic mistakes.

Freenotes diatonic instruments use the C major scale better known as the white notes on the piano.

To support something or keep it going. Sustaining instruments have tones that sound for several seconds.

Freenotes resonated instruments use acoustical (not electronic) air cavities to produce a fuller reverberating sound.

An instrument that is sounded by being struck and allowing for quick repetitive strikes.

“I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” ~ Plato29 30

Playing music transcends all boundaries of age, ethnicity, gender, and physicality. With Freenotes...

All Ages - All Abilities

everyone can play!

STAR Center Therapists and Clients Love FreenotesThe Executive Director of the Sensory Processing DisorderFoundation, which works with Denver’s STAR Center, sharedthese thoughts about our instruments:

“Freenotes instruments are a wonderful addition to oursensory playground! Children seem immediately drawn tothese instruments. Our therapists have used them a lot.

Our children have sensory issues, which often leadto behavior problems, isolation, and problems withsocialization. Our therapy is directed to working with thefamily to build self-esteem and socialization, so they canfunction more typically.

STAR Center therapists find that they help the childrenimplement rhythms, which can help calm them. One dadand his 4-year-old child began a game of fast/slow and high/low. This was a child who could hardly interact with the dad.It was wonderful!”

Freenotes instruments were originally developed byGrammy Award winning musician Richard Cooke in 1995.The idea came as a solution to the impediments of learningto play a traditional instrument and needing to readmusic. His experience of learning to play flute in an improvstyle without taking any lessons or reading music wasso profound, he wanted to teach others how they mightexperience this freedom of playing music instinctively. So many barriers are in the way of that, so he decided tocreate instruments that make it possible.

First, was the immense hurdle of wrong notes. Everyone who has tried to play knows the anguishof having the music stop because a note goes wrong. He decided to take them all out. Thenthere were all those intricate finger movements that take years to master, they had to go too.He started to build xylophones that had no sharps or flats and were played not with the tinymuscles of the fingers, but with the large coordinated muscles of the arms and hands. The ergonomics of the instruments is an important factor.

He made the tones sound so beautiful that everyone who started to play wouldn’t want to stop.He also realized that not everyone has the money to buy an instrument, let alone several, sothat they can play with their friends and family, which is when the music really comes alive. He wanted to find a way to allow everyone who wanted to play music to be able to do so. Hethought about putting instruments in the public parks so anyone could play whenever theywished.

And that’s how he started to make music parks over twenty years ago, so we could all share inthe joy and freedom of playing music successfully.

In June 2016 Richard did a Ted Talk about his story at TEDx Mile High. Hear the story from theman himself by visiting our website: freenotesharmonypark.com
