FALL & WINTER 2015-2016
What are glide shades you ask? They are the oldest form of shade
solutions we have. They date back to the Roman coliseum, which is why they look so familiar.
The timeless look of glide shades fit in anywhere, commercial as well as residential. Each one is cus-
tom made for your space. They can be added to an existing structure, or we can make one for you.
Glide shades are both modern and traditional.

What does Outdoor Weather Management mean to
you? Well for us it means controlling your environment
with the use of heating and cooling products. Your out-
door space should be treated the same as your indoor space. When you add the right products
to keep the space comfortable, you spend more time there. This year, consider adding some
warmth to your space so you and your guests can stay a little while longer.
We have installed Infratech heaters in several residential and commercial spaces.
No one ever complains about having comfort, yet will if they don’t have it.

What pops into your head when
you think of Thanksgiving? No
doubt your mind quickly travels to
thoughts of turkey with all the fix-
ings, football and probably enjoying
it with some family and
friends. Now think about where
that turkey and footballing actually
takes place.
THE ULTIMATE California
Thanksgiving
Most likely you can recount at least
one occasion of scrunching into small spaces with your back up to a wall and no clear exit strat-
egy. Here in Northern CA we are blessed enough to have the sun shine down on us 265 days
out of the year. So why do we continually insist on celebrating this holiday indoors when the
original one was not? At least that’s how Charlie Brown interrupted it in his version.
6
This year, try something bold, something different,
and something out there. Move your cramped table
off your living room carpet and put it in your back-
yard. Of course there is always Grandma Mae and
Aunt Betsy that no doubt will “feel a little chill in the
air” despite the 75 and sunny forecast. Fear
not! With so many patio heater options available,
you are certain to find the perfect one to accommo-
date them. Infratech Heaters are a great way to
keep your outdoor space cozy. These heaters use
infrared or radiant energy which is the most practical
way to add warmth to a space without greenhouse
emissions, odors or ultraviolet light. Also, consider
putting out a basket of shawls or throws your guest can use if they tend to run a little
on the chilly side.
Turn to natural décor for your
centerpiece and place set-
tings. You don’t have to spend a
lot of money on decorations to
make a beautiful table. Take a
walk and collect leaves, pine
cones and other bits of nature to
fill in your table décor.
Don’t be afraid to bring the in-
doors out. Linens, table settings,
and glassware can all be used outdoors, so don’t bother buying new outdoor ver-
sions. It’s only one day and why not bring the china outside for this special day.
This year give your guests a
Thanksgiving they will remember,
especially those out-of-towners
who don’t get to see the sun very
often. Enjoy one of the best
meals of the year outside in the
warm sun with the perfect glass
of wine.

Many of us have the same dilemma with patio furniture, should we store or cover. If you have a shed with room for your patio furniture,
then yes store them. Yet if you are like most people and don’t have the space then be sure and buy some quality covers for your valuable
furniture. We all know how expensive outdoor furniture can be and taking care of it will make it last. A key tip for taking care of your
cushions is to clean them before you store for the winter, and when you get them out for the summer, refresh that cleaning treatment
again. Sunbrella makes a great product called 303. You can by it at most places, yet if you have trouble finding it, we can help.

Lighting adds curb appeal and extends your landscaping into the night. Bring out unseen features of your landscape by lighting archi-tecture, yard art, pathways and plantings. In addition to aesthetics, lighting adds an element of safety and security by making pathways, steps and changes in elevation visible. To create a cohesive lighting design, consider how your landscape changes and how you can emphasize the outstanding features of the seasonal landscape. For example, bring to life the changing colors that come with fall and the reduction of leaf mass of your trees and shrubs by emphasizing the skeleton silhouettes. Winter lighting brings warmth to the shortened days, the fresh new buds and flowers in spring are bright and cheery leading into the dense growth of summer.
10
Be creative with your outdoor lighting endeavors. Use string lights above your patio, along fence lines or the edges of arbors. Bring lighted yard art into the landscape. Add a fire pit to extend the outdoor season. Make your lighted landscape visible from your indoor rooms and enjoy these elements while you slip into bed and fall asleep, gazing at your beautiful garden. There are many other ways to use light to highlight and add warmth to your outside landscape in the cooler days of fall and winter. Fire pits are increasing in popularity and can be used to extend outdoor leisure on colder evenings. Propane fueled fire pits are easy to light and maintain. Enjoy a glass of wine, a mug of hot cocoa and maybe a few marshmallows while warming yourself and company by the fire during holiday gatherings.
8 key ways to light land-
scape elements
Down-lighting/moonlighting:
light from above, usually in trees
to create shadows on the
ground from interesting foliage
or branch structure.
Up lighting: light from the base
of a tree that lights up the
underside of the canopy or light
at the base of yard art.
Cross Lighting: creates a 3D
effect by doubling the down or
up lighting fixtures to an object.
Mirror lighting: lights mirrored in a
pool or water feature.
Grazing: lights that pick up
architectural features and
textures. Typically installed close
to wall at a high angle.
Shadowing: light in front of an
object to create shadow on a
flat surface behind.
Silhouette Lighting: lighting
installed behind tree, in
between tree and building,
creating a silhouette effect.
Path and Spread: helps to
navigate and create low light-
ing along design curves. Spread
lighting is used to light up flower-
beds and other bold plantings
in spring and summer.
CUSTOM coziness
When Laurel Hanson received a candle holder made out of
recycled wine barrels in 2012, her husband Jon took one
look at it and said, “I can do that.” Soon after, Jon received
his first shipment of wine barrels and began experimenting.
Having been a woodworker most of his life, creating custom
furniture from recycled wine barrels was a natural transi-
tion. It wasn’t long before Hanson Woodworks was born.
It’s a labor of love for both Jon & Laurel.
Unique craftsmanship and attention to
detail are poured into every custom piece
they create. Their most recent creation is
the custom wine crate panel fire table. The
design is a Hanson Woodwork’s original.
This fire table will quickly become a conver-
sation piece in any patio or backyard .

Looking to make something unique for your outdoor space?
We took these pallets and made a present box to set outside. First thing was
to cut some pieces off pallets, we
then took them to the miter saw
and cut them to length. After they
were all the same length, we
screwed the pieces together using
pieces of pallet on the back side.
Once it was all put together we
painted it with exterior red paint,
wrapped ribbon around it... done.

renovation BACKYARD
It started as a simple project, but soon
putting in a new outdoor BBQ grew into a
massive backyard renovation. The only
thing kept was the original pool although
even it was resurfaced with Pebble Tec.
These home owners wanted to turn their
backyard into a place where they could
relax, unwind and entertain friends and
family. It needed to be comfortable and
accommodating for visits with their
children and grandchildren. As they
began discussing their plans for the 13
backyard, the home owners decided to add
on a sunroom for extra living space. It
would provide more room where the
grandkids could spread out, play and even
double as overflow sleeping accommoda-
tions. Low maintenance was another
important factor in the design. The pool
deck was recovered with pavers that extend
into the landscape. A plush artificial
turf sits in the back of the yard.
Vintage Giants stadium seats are a
great place to sit and watch the
dogs play on the grass.
The seating wall
provides plenty of
comfy seats
around the fire.
Custom garden
boxes line the
fence just off the
outdoor kitchen.

The sunroom is
bright, open and is a
very multifunctional
space. Lots of stor-
age provides space to
store the grandkids
toys, books and pool
towels. Even the
dogs were able to
claim some space.
There are lots of comfy corners to sit and admire the view
or even watch the game.

Roger Pajo from Creative Scapes recycled fence
boards from the current location and faced this

ing shed and add character. The bonus is saving
wood from the landfill.

Getting creative with holiday decorations is easy
when you think like Green Acres Nursery and
Supply. A blend of pumpkins, succulents and corn
stocks makes a dramatic piece for your patio or
entry. They also carry a great selection of
Christmas trees. You can create this too.
