• The story goes that a Dublin theatre proprietor by the name of

Richard Daly made a bet that he could, within forty-eight hours, make

a nonsense word known throughout the city, and that the public

would supply a meaning for it. After a performance one evening, he

gave his staff cards with the word ‘____' written on them, and told

them to write the word on walls around the city. The next day the

strange word was the talk of the town, and within a short time it had

become part of the language.

• This emerged in the mid-19th century and gave rise to the most

common use of the term today, for a type of entertainment based on

a test of a person's knowledge.

• It seems to have been adapted from the phrase 'to play for

love (of the game)' (i.e. to play for nothing).

• Another theory that is often heard is that it represents the

French word l'oeuf, meaning 'an egg' (from the resemblance

between an egg and a naught) this seems unlikely.

• An explanation is that the term originated as an abbreviation of orl

korrekt , a jokey misspelling of 'all correct' which was current in the US

in the 1830s.

• The oldest written references result from its use as a slogan by the

Democratic party during the American Presidential election of 1840.

Their candidate, President Martin Van Buren, was nicknamed ‘old

kinderhook' (after his birthplace in New York State), and his supporters

formed the ‘___ ___ Club'.
